For me, lack of soul (and I don't mean Soul Glo from Coming to America).

While I feel JJ probably gave things his all, in the end, he was only capable of superficially understanding Star Wars.

He could never comprehend the deeper aspects of the GFFA the way that Lucas did.

And it showed in the total lack of magic from TFA. The most uninspiring Star Wars film ever.

Can you people condense these issues into one thread? This is like the 10th "my biggest problem with TFA" thread I've seen today. It's all the same stuff too.

    Oh, and I disagree.

The pacing its the biggest issue with this film I want to see the directors cut apparently it's 3 hours long.

I really hope the director's cut gets released. I feel like there's a ton of great depth that got cut out of the film. Also, more Star Wars is always a plus :p

Like I feared, JJ is the worst thing in the film.

He delivered a film that not only thought the audience was stupid, but required it.

Plot holes galore. Strangers becoming best friends in minutes. Characters acting illogically. Characters knowing a ton of convenient information. Magic tricks.

I'm not sure how JJ has hoodwinked so many.

I think when the hype dies down people will come to their senses.

Thank god he's not directing others.

I should have known something was wrong with this movie when I found he wasn't directing the other movies. That's usually a sign the film is bad. Avengers and avengers age of ultron were both directed by joss whedon. But he's not directing avengers infinity war because age of ultron was so awful.

    Lack of explanation.

Rey developed her powers too quickly, and without training.

Kylo was more powerful than Vader in the sense of freezing things such as people and electricity bolts. How?

So many questions so few answers. It didn't feel Star Wars.

What is worse people are trying to defend it with all kind of theories.

Why did Rey develop so fast? Unless we learn of a force swipe. Did we even get the Knights of Ren "Forceback" ?

Anyway, I'm just wondering how much stronger Rey is going to get.. she already defeated Kylo Ren.. jeez. Is she going up against Snoke? If it's explained and makes sense, fine, but for now I think this movie left enough unanswered questions for me to ask this. I still believe shes a Kenobi. I just think all thats left for Rey is to learn to control the force, and reveal her identity. I don't see much more development as a character. Shes already stronger than Luke was at her age.

I have no other problem.. It's not even a problem, just a question im sure will be answered.

JJ only wanted to do one they had always planned a 3 director trilogy. joss whedon had also made it abuntantly clear he was not going to direct Avengers 3. the studio f*cked up Age of Ultron not Whedon. he just stopped caring when Marvel wouldnt stop f*cking with his film. shows how much you know....

You know which movies also changed director?
    ANH -> George Lucas
    ESB -> Irvin Kershner
    ROTJ -> Richard Marquand

So GL didn't direct ESB because ANH was bad? Kershner didn't direct ROTJ because ESB was bad?...

    Music.
Not enough of it, no stand-out "anthem" for this particular Episode. Bought the CD on the 18th and only included 23 tracks. Maz's cantina song isn't even included!
A lot of The Force Awakens themes often remind me of other John Williams scores, particularly the "Harry Potter" ones.

TPM (I) had "Duel Of The Fates"
AOTC (II) had "Across The Stars"
ROTS (III) had "Battle Of The Heroes"
    ANH (IV) had "Main Title"
    TESB (V) had "Imperial March"
ROTJ (VI) had "Yub Nub" ;)
TFA (VII) didn't really have it's own theme. Maybe "Rey's Theme" was its strongest ?

And it seems he was right, as everybody is buying into his movie.

That´s why I won´t buy this OST but I will buy the special Ep.1-6 OST Edition to be released in january.
    --- Double Post Merged, Dec 21, 2015 ---
This. People (old and new fans) wanted so much this movie to be good or at least beat the prequels that they can´t accept it is by far the worst SW attempt, it may be worse than the Holiday Special. And I am not talking about cinema theory here (making of a movie), but I am talking about THE STAR WARS UNIVERSE.

The biggest problem with TFA is that it can't be TPM, AOTC, ROTS, ANH, ESB, and ROTJ. Some people, forgetting that neither of those movies were perfect either, will be disappointed if they expected a perfect movie that was on par with whichever is their favorite movie in the franchise.

Ouch...I have to confess that the space pirate with the scottish (?) accent (what's the character's name, can we get a picture, please) reminded me a wee bit too much of the thugs in the comedic piece of Cloud Atlas, but fortunately he got disposed of rather quickly. ;-)

    ___

How many times did you listen to the TFA trailer soundtrack? It's sooo good. It modernizes the themes and leitmotifs from the original trilogy with epic flare. More so than the visuals, the trailer soundtrack had me the most willing to forget the anticipointment of the prequal trilogy.

But the trailer soundtrack is unique to the trailer, not uncommon in films today. There seemed to be a conscious decision not to modernize and reprise the old themes in TFA, except for "the force" theme and the main title (used sparingly). Of course lei's theme is used for carrie fisher's scene. The "March of the Resistance" in effect replaced the arguably stronger "Rebel Fanfare."

I recognized three new themes, or leiitmotif's in TFA soundtrack. Rey's theme is the strongest among them, but even that theme is not used more than a handful of times relative to how often themes repeated in the original soundtracks. Kylo Rens also has a theme using brass elements which gets the job done well enough.

Basically, the ANH, and ESB soundtracks are lighting in a bottle.

A touch more backstory (a couple lines here and there in leiu of that silly monster sequence would have been great), a slower pace, and more emphasis on recurring orchestral themes would have helped the film.

After watching TFA my 10 yr old nephew asked to watch the originals with me . For that reason I consider TFA a success.

    Snoke.
Not scary, not convincing, no story of how he got to be where he is or who he is. And he's only a hologram so far.
For all we know, Snoke may actually be only an inch high with a really, really good magnification hologram app. ;)

The marketing. It was insulting to anyone with a brain.
    For example
JJ Abrams sometime in November 2015
Don't blink or you miss the directors favorite actor in TFA.
Yes what JJ? Insulting fans with such nonsense whilst knowing everyone of them will see it anyway.

Problems with the movie are to my mind all recoverable through better writing and pace, but why even try in the first place, everyone is paying and critics are turned down from frantic Star Wars fans as bashing the movie. Well, perhaps the next director does have some self esteem and will try regardless.

Off Topic: Mr. Mathew Vaughn you are game for NOT giving up your balls to the mouse.
