    Heard something interesting.

The lightsaber floating through space establishing shot may have been scrapped in favor of a Star Destroyer, severely damaged, coming into frame. This will be the star destroyer Driver boards and Boyega escapes from when he decides to go on the lamb.

It is in the proximity of whatever the desert planet Ridley is hiding out on.

That's all my source told me.

Here's where I get into speculation territory.

Driver comes aboard at some point. According to the image my source saw, there is some point that Gwendolyn Chrisities character chews Boyega out, so I imagine Driver arrived shortly after that. Driver requests Boyega be turned over to him, Boyega sees his commanding officer , Gwendolyb Christie the Chrome Trooper, give him up and he decides he's getting the hell off the star destroyer. Not only does he decide he's leaving, he decides he might as well blow the thing up so no one will think to come after him.

For the most part he succeeds, ala self-destruct or some sort of explosive, and he escapes with an already mangled Tie Fighter, damaged from the explosion, he crashes to the surface of the desert planet.

Obviously Driver and Christie escape, but Drivers ship is mostly damaged, especially in the cargo hold area, where he has a healthy store of "artifacts", one of those being a certain lightsaber that goes pummeling through space and is sucked into the same gravity well Boyegas damaged tie fighter is.

Once Boyega is out of his wreckage on the planet, said lightsaber is lying nearby. He knows what a lightsaber is and scoops it up, stowing it away for uses he does not yet know. No clue the significance of it being Luke Skywalkers.

Back to what I have heard territory. At some point in the film, Christie is commanding a super star destroyer, so I'm guessing Driver helps her commandeer that so she can hunt down Boyega for him.

Ridley's character was Skywalkers apprentice when she was a child to early teen, and when Boyega shows her the lightsaber and she senses it's from her former teacher, she takes it as a sign she needs to find him. Especially when Boyega tells her Driver was after him. She does not know if Driver is a Sith or even Force sensitive, but she knows he is out to kill potential Jedi. The Dark side is on the move, and she feels there is only one person who can help them.

Earlier this week when the concept art leaked, I sent an email to both sources asking what the deal was with the crashed Star Destroyer in one of the Abu Dharib pics. Neither of them heard of a crash sequence of that magnitude happening, but one said there was word the opening sequence was being reworked to start out with more of a bang than just a lightsaber floating through space.

That's all I got for now. Will post if I get anymore concrete info. I sent them the same speculation I shared with you and asked them if they could say if anything was close. I'll update if anything is confirmed.

    Happy Friday

Good stuff Kyle. Still clouded on how Daisy and the Skywalkers relate.

Have not had any clarification on Ridley or her backstory, just that she was Luke's apprentice and she believes he is either dead or has abandoned her.

I think there was a report a couple weeks back of a scene being shot where people outside of a cantina were looking up on the sky as a planet (maybe a ship) exploded. Maybe that's the star destroyer exploding and that's the cantina were Kira goes to later in the film.

I can dig most of this as being a nice and sensational opening to the film but I'm not sure that a Lightsaber should be impervious to the damaging effects of atmospheric re-entry even in the GFFA....

Good connecting of the dots... a battle above tattoine, chaos and the destiny of the characters coming together. Good way to get the story moving. Perhaps Kira has been hiding from the Jedi hunters and now knows it's time to move on. She's met another force sensitive and thinks it's a good idea to search out Luke, something maybe she's been reluctant to do, maybe they parted the way Luke left yoda, her training not yet complete. Boyega is clearly more than just a Stormtrooper. VI started on Tatooine, then to Endor, with a brief visit to Dagobah in between. I could see VII following this pattern. Skellig being the Dagobah of VII, perhaps they're tracked there. We get out first look at a Sith. Similar to Maul showing up on Tattooine. They escape, rescued by whomever is flying the Falcon.

There has to be a second storyline too. One that involves Han and Chewie, the Puzzlewood forest and maybe Gleeson's character.
I haven't seen any good info on who his character is. Maybe Driver is a just a ruse... could he be the Chancellor Palaptine (wolf in sheeps clothing)?

If the lightsaber was dropped from a stopped ship not in orbit of the planet, it may not be travelling fast enough to burn up in re-entry.

True- if we're talking about a stationary (floating) or even a moving ship already within the planet's atmosphere, but the OP mentioned something about a gravity well, which is an off-planet spatial/mass effect in astrophysics.

Thank the maker they scrapped the lightsaber/hand intro. If the rumors were/are true, I think that fans might deserve some credit for the revision.

It could also fall to the planet's surface after a ship breaks up in the atmosphere... or is part of crash debris.

Do we still know which lightsaber it is? Anakin's that Luke lost on Cloud City, or the Green one from ROTJ. If it is the one from Cloud city she would have never seen it, If it is the green one then she would definitely would recognize it if she was trained by Luke, assuming he did not change it post ROTJ.

She may not have seen it, but she may know of it. No way of knowing yet which lightsaber it is, or whose it is. What about Darth's from ROTJ?

I believe Darth Vader's lightsaber fell into the shaft where the Emperor was thrown, maybe when the Death Star exploded it sent his lightsaber hurling into space or down to Endor's forest moon.
