You would think the TIE would have evolved a bit more over 30 years...Maybe these are retrofitted original TIEs...Hopefully there are some actual new ship designs. So far everything is derivative of OT ships. Kylo's shuttle is the most original, but still derivative of the Imerial Shuttle.

And if they had evolved it more you would reading complaints about how different it is. There's no pleasing everyone.

Something like that was an actual problem with WWI fighters. The old biplanes had the machine gun(s) mounted on top of the upper wing so they wouldn't shoot off the propeller blades. This was an awkward and inaccurate setup, and eventually a device called a synchronization gear was invented to allow the guns to be mounted directly in front of the pilot and fire through the propeller without damaging it.

To be fair....People want it somehow different but not disconnected. I wonder what the model-builders had as alternatives...

I'm definitely thinking this is a 2-man ship. Maybe just to facilitate Finn & Poe escaping together?

I think so. They are shaped kind of like tongue and grooves that would work well with a conveyor or something.

not really necessary we've already seen that 2 or 3 people can fit easily in a regular tie

This is 100% total speculation on my part, but I think they may be some sort of devices to boost power. In that part of the solar panel/wing on the old TIE Fighters there's something called a "Phase two energy collection coil".

If so, extra power might be needed to charge up all the additional guns. Also, the old TIE's have no hyperdrive, shields, or life support systems. Maybe the new TIE's now have some or all of those features and the extra power could be for those new systems. Or the devices themselves might be shield generators.

Here's a cross section with the energy coil highlighted in red-

    tie-cross.PNG

Again, I'm just speculating, and I could be totally wrong.:D

I don't think the small design evolution is unrealistic. Just compare car models in our galaxy. A 1985 VW Golf, for instance, still shares many characteristics and a distinctive exterior with a 2015 VW Golf. It's a bit rounder, a bit flashier, and more modern looking - yet it's still recognisable.

If you add that the galaxy is at war, it's even more understandable that redesigning ships (at least exteriors - functionality is a different subject) might not be high on the agenda.

You would think so right? But I am currently in the US Navy and the ship's we are still using were designed and built over 30 years ago. We have some new ones but out nuclear powered ships (carriers and subs) must last 50 years before decommission. Admiral Rickover guaranteed 50 years when he was pitching the idea to congress. So if our world is any indication, I'm not surprised Star Wars has thirty year old ship designs

My thoughts exactly on how this is confirmation that the leaked art work is legit. Looks great. I don't think we needed completely new ships, just a slight tweeking of the originals. It resonates the old look but shows enough progress for the times of war.
