I do think they're going to fold Grogu back in after the sequel trilogy. Maybe even Ezra. They can move much of that stuff with Thrawn to the Unknown Regions. That helps set up the big bad and tie it all together. I don't think they have to wait for Mando to be over. Having both of these going would help both.

I don't know why it's only just occurred to me, but how old would Ezra be by now? IIRC he would be around Luke's age in Rebels, so unless he's been in some 'time hole', wouldn't we be expecting a much older Ezra if he makes a present day appearance?

That's a good point. Ezra was born in 19 BBY, same as Luke, which means they'll both be around 30 in the current Mandalorian timeline. Eman Esfandi is 25, but looks pretty mature from what I've seen, and he should have no problem looking older, I think. (Unlike, say... Tom Holland, who's about the same age as Esfandi but looks 15, heh heh). Now, if they were to push the Ezra character into post TRoS time in a few years, they'd have age him up considerably, or recast the part. (Same goes, I guess, for Ahsoka/Rosario Dawson and others).

I assume it would be recast if Ezra appears post TROS. Ahsoka would be pushing 70ish, but given the make up with live action Ahsoka, they could probably keep Dawson in the part. I'm not sure Dave is gonna want to keep Ahsoka around that long. Seems like he'll want to complete her story.

    We lost Rogue Squadron now.

    Ugh.

We really are becoming the new DCEU.

It's been taken off Disney's release schedule, which people take as confirmation that the film has been canned (even though it was obvious that it wouldn't hit the December 2023 schedule so taking it off the schedule is basically a formality at this point).

We know nothing more about Rogue Squadron now than we did last spring, when it was taken off the schedule.

Here's the quote from May: "Rogue Squadron…we kind of pushed off to the side for the moment. Patty is developing the script further. Then we will talk about how that connects to the central spine that we're working on."

I think I missed this quote as well. That also is a hint that they have some kind of plan in place that they're working towards. This is good news.

Except she really isn't except in the context of some really specious criteria and spurious notions of the standards of storytelling and character. All used to describe what is essentially a virtual popularity contest.

You quoted my definition of a 'Mary Sue' character. I was squarely on Team Rey after the film came out.

While I thought her powers were beyond anything we'd see in SW up to that point -- I loved her introduction and wasn't complaining because there were two films yet to come which would probably explain it.

Her powers are rather commonplace among the novice force sensitives we've seen in SW up to that point. She was discovering them in much the same way that Luke discovered that he could make an impossible shot by feeling instead of targeting, and then move out of reach objects with the force. In spite of having never consciously done anything like that before, they did them when the storyline, and their path to destiny FORCED them to discover they had these specific powers. Rey's display of powers in TFA was inherently explicable because this is the way that force sensitive characters are traditionally shown discovering new abilities in the saga.

The whole point of the scene in ESB with Luke's ship is that Luke doesn't need special training or practice. He already has the skill or the knowledge to do it since before he ever met Yoda. Yoda's lesson is that the difference between success and failure is in belief and commitment to that belief. "It is no different. Only different in your mind" At no point in any Star Wars film is the secret or technique explained to someone for any new or specific ability or how they come by it. Everything that we see Luke doing on Dagobah he'd done already. Yoda just raises his awareness to how a Jedi is committed to doing these things consistently, ethically, responsibly and in proportion etc.

Well said -- and I agree with you that both Luke and Rey demonstrated their innate ability without training. But I suspect George Lucas and Dave Feloni would argue that it takes a Master Jedi to train a force-sensitive person to use their mind to do it successfully on a consistent basis.

I liken it to the notion a super-athletic football player still needs to practice with a trained coach to do perform consistently well. That player's sheer athletic ability might allow him to make a spectacular, jaw-dropping play on the field (ala Luke's shot to destroy the Deathstar.) So with Rey, I could buy her attracting Luke's lightsaber without the slightest bit of training. But a prolonged lightsaber battle against Kylo Ren, a highly-skilled and highly-trained opponent???!? That seems (to me) to stretch the whole 'she doesn't need training or practice' argument way too far.

No argument here. That's the life of a Jedi. Not the same thing as being able to use the force and survive or prevail in your first duel.

I don't remember Kylo's practice and skill as a duelist being either depicted or foretold in any compelling way. But it is a reasonable assumption that he has more specific experience with that specific weapon than Rey has. However, there are many more factors to consider here. Like Kylo's emotional and physical handicaps after murdering his father and then being blasted in the waist by Chewie. Plus he was tasked with capturing Rey. Not destroying her.Rey's predicament is less cluttered. She just wants to survive if that means killing him. (You could argue that she just wants to kill Kylo for killing her friends) The emergence of Rey's powers has had Kylo rattled since the interrogation. So he's experiencing a good amount of fear. to And then there's Finn, who valiantly fought Kylo weakening him more until the inevitable happened.

When we get to TROS, Kylo is concerned only with preventing Rey from blindly falling into a trap of destiny. He is genuinely trying to protect her this time. Rey is terribly conflicted about Kylo though and about herself. She is the one whose objectives are confused. That's why she does not have the upper hand in that duel until Leia intervenes.

Love the discussion here, but this isn't the thread for rehashing the sequel trilogy. Let's try to stick to future projects. Thanks!

    'Some of the cast'....
Now that begs the question....? Adam Driver said not so long ago he'd play Kylo/Ben again, but he's currently got a lot lined up....and apparently the new film 'isn't a continuance of the Skywalker saga.'

Oscar Isaac might...but he's currently in Moon Knight, so the schedules might clash.

That leaves Daisy and John...both of them said they didn't want to 'do Star Wars' again.

    But...there IS the money factor...;)

Hmmm. If the standalone movie is successful enough then it will be expected that they create and develop another movie in its continuity. Or else they will have "dropped the ball", "missed opportunities, "thrown it under the bus" "ignored" "destroyed" resulting in the ruining of the franchise, etc., etc. And then if the next movie adds things to that story that people weren't predicting or bargaining for, they will be criticised for not planning these things out. Since anything that can't be accurately pre-plotted (and pre-empted) by the fandom is always due to lack of "proper planning".

Based on the report is almost seems like Lucasfilm did something similar to what they did with the High Republic. Obviously the first film has to be good for this work so it makes sense they're taking their time. My guess they'll introduce a major new character in the new film and they'll eventually work in Rey/Finn later. A great way to build hype. Doing a film at a time is less risky than a trilogy. Marvel started with Iron Man, but they had some less than great films after that, but it didn't matter much because you can move on quicker.
The only people coming back in a major way in my opinion would be Finn/Poe/Rey. Ben might appear as a force ghost at some point, but that's about it. This also gets me thinking about the Ringer podcast again where it was reported Lucasfilm was looking at the future of attachments in regards to the Jedi.
