    They could have died to strengthen his position as a true villain. Maybe his goal is really be greater than Vader. Vader was redeemed because of family, making Kylo fall more and more killing his family makes the audience think that he can be worse than Vader. JJ always said that he was an incomplete villain, so I don't know, maybe that is the real goal. Of course it would feel strange if Ep IX is really the last Saga one, but I particularly don't believe in it, so make him a complete villain in a franchise that will go on is something that makes sense.
