Got to watch The Director and the Jedi today. Had to catch it on YouTube, because it doesn't come out here until the end of April and I didn't want to have all the cool tidbits spoiled...

It's nice, I liked it very much, but the problem with these artsy documentaries we've been getting lately is that they're not particularly informative or objective. There's a ton of beautiful shots and nicely captured moments, but I felt like it didn't focus on anything to a satisfying extent. It's an artistic impression about filmmaking, which is fine, but I would also love to see something a bit more grounded. I don't know, maybe it's just my feeling.

I noticed that it (purposefully or not) highlighted Mark's negative attitude towards this version of Luke, which made me pretty sad. I mean - it's sad he didn't like it and probably didn't enjoy this character like he wanted to. Which makes his performance even more impressive, he was such a professional. Also, geez... There are so many moments in this documentary that will fuel TLJ haters.....

Oh, and I've just realised there was nothing about the music in the documentaries. Zero, no John Williams. Seriously?

I also saw the deleted scenes - some of them were quite fun. The Caretaker village one was cool (great new rendition of Rey's theme). It cracked me up when the Caretaker wanted Rey to swing the lightsaber. I was enjoying the elevator sequence, but the ending of the Tom Hardy moment ruins it. I'm glad the short scene of Falcon on Crait was cut, because it would only interrupt Luke's moment. The idea behind the Phasma's scene was brilliant, but the execution left much to be desired. I'm glad the alternative opening wasn't used. I get the idea behind it, we were supposed to slowly start figuring stuff along with Finn, but jumping straight into action was a much better decision.

The Balance of the Force video that comes with the Blu-ray is great. Rian Johnson does a great job of explaining why Luke is on that island, why he's cut himself off from the force, and why he thinks the Jedi should end. It's not cowardice. It's Luke's selflessness. He believes the Jedi have contributed to the galaxy's issues. It's good stuff. The video also discusses Rey and what she goes through.

I just watched The Director and the Jedi and good Lord, it was brilliant.

The Last Jedi is probably my third favorite Star Wars film overall, so to see such an in-depth look at how it all came together was really amazing. I loved the cast interactions and seeing all the behind-the-scenes footage. The scene with Luke and Leia was so beautiful, and when Carrie started getting emotional, I literally lost it.

I do understand what @srg is saying because it does hop around a lot, but for what it’s worth, I thought they did a really nice job. I wish there were some more cast interviews and stuff like that, because there was very little from some of the actors, like Adam Driver and Oscar Isaac. But overall, the documentary was really well-done and it made me love the film even more than I thought was possible.

I really hope they do something like this for Episode IX.

Yeah, I think it was very unbalanced. Particularly when it comes to Kylo. Not much about him, which is weird since he's basically the second main lead. I'm wondering if certain actors refused to be closely followed by BTS cameras, because that would be such a Driver thing to do. :p

That’s what I thought, too. There was a lot on Luke and Leia, and Rey was featured pretty prominently throughout. But Kylo Ren is crucial to the story and is probably the second main lead, so I would imagine Adam probably didn’t want to be filmed. I think I read that he has a lot of anxiety and I don’t think he really likes the idea of being a celebrity, he’s really just in the business because he’s passionate about acting. Maybe that’s why, but regardless, it’s disappointing. In general, I wish there were more cast interviews, but I’m beyond pleased with what we did get!

It's kind of funny. Adam doesn't watch any of the movies in which he works. The only exception is Star Wars. Kylo Ren is such a difficult character for this trilogy. He's been fantastic.

It is really eerie to see Episode 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 boxes all sitting next to each other on my shelf as I eagerly await Episode 9. I think back to the early 80's when my older brother sat me down and explained to me about this 9 Part Saga that Lucas had in store. It comes full circle in 2019!

There are so many Star Wars films now that it's difficult to rank them. I like some more than others, but even a movie like Attack of the Clones I don't hate it. I'm not really fond of Return of the Jedi either, but I don't hate it. That's what makes some of the hyperbole about The Last Jedi so tiresome. The idea that The Last Jedi "destroyed the saga" or "ruin Star Wars" is comical. If a person really believes that then disappointment was going to be inevitable with the number of films Lucasfilm is going to be putting out.
