Isn't this thread a little premature? I'm guessing you haven't seen the movie, so it's a little early to criticise a character design that you've not seen yet. When I say design, I'm referring to all the ingredients that make up Maz Kanata

I agree. This is a weird thread. Why wouldn't Disney want to get a talented actress to play the role?

With Lupita, she's a great actress overall, and I believe she even graduated from Juliards (correct me of I'm wrong). Her voice is powerful, sweet, and really unique with her accent, in my opinion. However, the point that I agree with you on, is that she should have had her literal face...what we believe her character to currently look like, and the voice attached to it, they don't match, and don't look quiet right in my eyes. -- -ears*.

Which planet are you living on?
    It's Lupita Nyong'o!
She won an Oscar! She is in another topnotch photoshoot every other week?

The only miff I have with her doing motion capture is the fact, that we won't see her beautiful face :(

Yeh, I think Yale has a great performance arts program. She's gorgeous, but I just hope that JJ doesn't make her look as unrecognizable as what we think we've seen as Maz Kanata. The whole purpose of MoCap is so that the actors' facial features can be clearly scene to form a much better performance.

But also to make the actor unrecognizable. Serkis as Ceasar was groundbreaking without seeing him.
I think kinda a similar challenge for the actor like Christie had to deal with.

The difference is that we could actually SEE Serkis's eyes and his basic movements as a person in his performance...same with Gollum. I'm just worried that it will make for a much harder time for Lupita's performance to shine through in a physical way, unless MoCap has drastically experienced a ton of updates in the last few years. Not saying that it will not look good, but I believe it will look great...it just feels...off to emote behind the glasses from what we suppose we are seeing as Maz Kanata.

I'm withholding any judgment on the mo-cap characters until we see them in action, which probably won't be until the movie comes out.

I've seen fantastic mo-cap that truly captures the actors' performance, and absolute crap mo-cap that totally takes you out of the experience because the CG character just doesn't sync with the rest of the film.

It's more likely that the former is going to be the case here given Disney and ILM's resources, but you never know: there are plenty of big budget films with poor special effects on account of lack of talent.

I can't judge her performance yet. Only heard her voice in the trailers. I'll need to see the movie first.

(Are we going to do every actor now we saw/heard in the trailers and tv spot, judging there performance without seeing the movie? We've had Daisy Ridley and now Lupita Nyong'o. Who's next? John Boyega? He seems to have the same expression througout the entire 4+ minutes of footage we saw except the part where Kylo attacks him. And don't get me started on Gwendoline Christie's facial expressions as Phasma (note to readers: no this is not my real opinion XD.) )
