(In case it was not clear what you were referring to and due to formatting...)

I think based on the quality of Rian's response it's safe to say that SW is in good hands people.

If Rian Johnson wants to use the Emperor as an example than hopefully they intend on digitally altering the scar in TFA to match the new one like they did with Ian McDiarmid's Palpatine.

While I agree that it's a very visible change, I'm getting the feeling that people are digging in their heels. Of course the Emperor was eventually changed so that the actor was consistent, but we spent a LOOOONG time with the original; and it worked just fine. This is a much smaller detail, and the placement of the scar is not important to the story. It's a style thing. Costumes and locations will change, too.

I get it, though. We saw the injury, and scars don't move. Consistency is important. But I just hope nobody backs themselves into an emotional corner where it can't be accepted. Give it a chance. In the movie, the last thing you'll be paying attention to is the scar.

Well.. judging by some comments in here... I'm not so sure... :D :D :p

I have no problem with it. If RJ says it's for the best, it's for the best in my books.

Now let's all hold hands and move on.

    Just saying:

The guy that tweeted Rian Johnson just to throw in his face that the scar is not in place and the character is less goffy: WHAT A SHAME.

Fortunatly Ryan has is thinking about way more important things than "scar continuity".

God that's dumb. I was hoping his face would be disfigured and we'd see him in the mask a bit more.

Also, Rian is right that he would have looked goofy. More proof of J.J. not looking ahead and only caring about his movie.

I give huge props to Rian for addressing this outright. You wouldn't see JJ or George doing that.

The fact that this was a creative decision did surprise me at first. But if think about his reasoning, it's probably a good thing. I'd be willing to bet that they started filming with a larger scar in the original place and it looked kinda silly and distracting. They probably didn't think through the placement long term when they filmed TFA. So a creative decision was made to alter it. If they were willing to sacrifice continuity to change it I'm sure it looked pretty silly.

Its a little unfortunate from a continuity stand point but at the end of the day I'm sure it's for the best.

Saying JJ only cared about his movie because of this is completely rediculous. He's producing episodes 8 and 9 after all. This is what happens when you have different directors in a trilogy.

If you're looking for consistency/continuity, you might be in the wrong franchise. I think it's kinda part of the charm.

Although not a massive deal, I guess it is another indicator that TFA was poorly planned. I have to say though, had the OP not pointed it out, I doubt I'd have noticed.

The scar was fine in TFA. The scar looks fine in TLJ. Unless you're talking about Harry Potter, I couldn't care less if they move a scar a few inches.

OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH just like Luke in ESB. In ANH, Luke's face was all nice and clean. But in Empire Strikes Back it was one big mess with scars and everything. You suck George Lucas, you didn't plan ahead.

OH gosh, I didn't notice this but someone is actually saying this. Yeah J.J. didn't plan it out that Johnson would change it. What a sucker...........what a sucker.

I love it! Rian Johnson changed the scar and it's JJ's fault for not planning or caring enough!

This is why I love the internet. Star Wars fans are so rediculous sometimes. ;)

For (hypothetical) perspective, let's pretend it's 1982 and we're hearing rumors about "Star Wars 2."

"Darth Vader can't be Luke's dad. Obi Wan said he killed him. That's such a glaring mistake. George Lucas is a hack. This new Star Wars movie is going to suck."

So from a historical standpoint, bigger continuity issues have presented themselves. Not only has it managed to work still, but it has worked remarkably well. And in this case, it actually created one of the most memorable moments in cinema history.

I promise Adam Driver's face is going to be okay, boys and girls. Let's just try to enjoy Scar Wars VIII: The Last Jedi without throwing hissy fits like children.

Well, just to be clear: Luke looks scarred in TESB because Mark Hamill was left scarred after a car accident in 1977 (a few months before the release of ANH). Whilst it is still widely considered something of a production myth that Lucas and Kershner added the Wampa scene on Hoth to explain Luke's scarring, Hamill has previously stated that the make-up department did pay attention to, nod seemingly build on, his scars from the accident (in which cartilage was taken from his ear to reconstruct his nose). TOTALLY different situation to what we've got going on here.

Back on topic though: kudos to Rian, man, not only does Kylo look drastically cooler with that scar - and draw plenty more parallels to Anakin from ROTS and what we saw of a newly hairstyled and scarred Rey in promotional packaging templates for TLJ - but there are plenty of directors, I assume, that would have just rolled with the hand dealt to them by J.J. Totally signals to me that this guy knows exactly what story he wants to tell and how, and what's to put his thumbprint on it (as if that wasn't evident enough from his prior resumé).

My one problem with it now, though, is not the positioning, but rather, EA's reconstruction of the scar shown in marketing pre-orders for Battlefront II with new TLJ-inspired skins for Rey and Kylo: Kylo's scar looks somewhat faded here and in TLJ stills compared with a sharper and bloodier look depicted in TLJ teaser (perhaps hinting at more bacta rub or a time jump in the film?).

I was just looking at a video if Snoke. Some people have commented that the scar on his face was similar to Kylo's wound. Leading of course to theories that Snoke is Kylo from the future.

What if they minimized the scar and moved it slightly just to bury an unpopular theory.

I didn't like it but after seeing Rian Johnson's twitter response, I can breathe a sigh of relief. He knows what he's doing.
