    My Theory on the Force:

What if the force is like a dormant gene that only activates when someone comes into contact with other active force users/or the force in general.

Like for example, when Qui-Gon meets Anakin and Kanan meets Ezra...it activates their force sensitive genes.

So when all the Jedi are wiped out, Luke is literally their only hope.

What if Luke realizes that Adam Driver(or whoever the big baddie is) is going around collecting these sith artifacts in hopes of learning the ways of the force for evil. He knows the villain will figure out that he can't unlock any of his force powers until he comes in contact with a force user....Luke.

So Luke goes into hiding in fear that his force will unlock greater evils in Driver and possibly other weapons in the world.

That means that since Luke is the last Jedi in the universe (unless he trained someone), no other person born with force sensitive genes has been:

    1-even aware they posses it
2-been able to use it because the Living force that is manifested in others is the only thing that brings it out

In conclusion, that means the force has literally been dormant for 30 years in everyone...and when Luke does return in Episode VII it "Awakens" the force...for good and for evil.

Any thoughts are welcome, thanks for reading!

BTW this is my first post and I just want to say thanks to the Moderators and posters for providing a great forum to pass the day. I really enjoy reading your thoughts/theories/jokes about Star Wars and look forward to much more!

Idk about that like for example it doesnt work if you try it with Anakin. He was the only human podracer and the only reason he could do that is he was using the Force. Furthermore there are other Force users in the galaxy that arent Jedi or Sith (like the nightsisters of Dathomir) so i dont think that Luke would be the only person in the entire galaxy able to access the Force. The way your theory could be true is if Force-sensitive people dont know they are Force-sensitive and then someone lets them know they are using the Force.

    @The Rancor

Luke was a good pilot too, maybe it was just genetic and Anakin passed it down to him? Being a good pilot doesn't necessarily have to do with the force.

Sure people who are force sensitive might have heightened senses to be able to pod race and such but they can't really awaken the real power of the force until then come into contact with it.

The whole Anakin was made by midichlorians kinda makes no sense so it's hard to rationalize him for this theory to begin with.

Also, I thought the sisters of Dathomir were just witches? Even so it is lead to believe that the Empire hunts down all force sensitive users as we are seeing with Rebels.

Anyway, basically what I'm saying is that...it's not only that these possible force sensitive users need training to use/awaken these force powers but they need the actual "force itself"

Meaning they need to come into contact with someone(or the actual force)who has awakened the dormant gene and are mastering it somehow( jedi's, sith's, witches, whoever) to awaken it in themselves.

With all the death after the Ep III, basically the force went to sleep. The "Force's" power was diminished with the diminishing number of force users until eventually Luke was the only one left.

Anyway it's just a theory, thanks for responding.

Anakin was already using the Force before meeting Qui Gon... that was why he was able to be such a good pilot. (This, I believe, is explained in dialogue at some point... "When I first met him, your father was already a great pilot. But I was amazed how strongly the Force was with him. I took it upon myself to train him as a Jedi")

I don't think we can go with the Force being dormant, per se... but... I could see there being a quickening of sorts where the ability to channel it is enhanced with training, and without that trick, most of the Force users will be weak, possibly attributing the skills to intuition or reflexes
