Now that I thought about it, you could be right too. Thrawn's last diary entry can be interpreted both ways:

    And Eli says:

He also speaks of Thrawn's legacy. But, I cannot see a scenario in which Eli was still in navy and allowed to go to the Chiss, considering Thrawn was hiding their whereabouts from the Emperor. And final entry does not necessarily mean before death.

Now I made myself nervous - they must not kill him in Rebels, lol!

Ok I have just re read the Epilogue & while Personally i don't think Thrawn is dead it is certainly not clear wether he is dead or alive particularly or the references to his legacy.
Also it not clear when the epilogue takes place though I would guess before ROTJ though it could be after (This could be Vanto escaping after the fall of the empire) as it seams Vento is on his own & this meeting with the Chiss was set up by Thrawn.

That's how I read it the first time around, but Thrawn's fate is unclear.

See I wasn't worried about Thrawn dying in Rebels but then they introduced the Noghri which obvasly raises that possibilities but I will never nay become really worried if they revel Zhan is writing a Rebels Episode if that happens then I think Thrawn maybe toast.

Maybe the Emperor sends Thrawn away on a mission and every one just thinks he's dead, or they don't expect him to return, and he's forgotten....only to return after the RotJ.
...But, if he does bite it in Rebels, I have to say, it would be cool to hear Mikkelsen's Thrawn say, "But...It was so artistically done."

Well, someone commands the SSD Eclipse Rae Sloane meets at the end of Empire's End. Let's hope it is Thrawn, though I have my doubt that he would actually serve the First Order considering why he served the Empire in the first place. I do see him recruiting someone like Sloane for his plans, seeing how smart officers thrived under his command.

This could be where Snoke comes in Thrawn & Sloane meet up on the Eclipse & start to reorganise the Empire but Snoke takes a interest in Hux & uses him to overthrow them & start up the First Order.
I know it's a bit far fetched but I just find it hard to think of Thrawn & Sloane working for the FO they just seam to smart to follow Snoke BS.

Agreed. Sloane believed in the concept of the Empire - in the law and order it represented for her. She has already shown her distaste for some of Rax's choices, like training children for example. And we know that it didn't go away. Thrawn served the Empire in order to serve his people. It's questionable if FO would similarly command his loyalty.

My (not very likely) head canon is that Thrawn takes the smartest officers with him back to the Chiss and reunites with Eli. What would Imperial remnants or FO do? They don't even know where the Chiss are. :D

Now this I like a lot.
Maybe a Chiss Empire can turn up & kick Snoke ass hence saving the Resistance & The Republic which would make for a very interesting end to IX.

What if Thrawn, as the de facto leader of the Empire, takes the Eclipse and the rest of the Imperial remnant back the Chiss? Perhaps he needs to address this unknown threat and only when that has been addressed would Thrawn agree to help Sloane work on the rise of the First Order.

We'll see. Most of the FO we see are of younger generation - Hux, Phasma... If Thrawn outlived the Emperor, where are he and Sloane? As I said, I can't see him serving the First Order, because when they arrive to the Unknown Regions they are merely a shadow of what Thrawn supported - for the good of his people. I'd like the version of the story in which Thrawn, Chiss and a handful of others he personally picked (Eli, Sloane...) are the third faction in the galaxy.

I agree it is hard to see any motivation for Thrawn to play a part in the First Order. There is a lot time between Sloane's rendezvous with the Eclipse and the rise of the First Order. There's more to the story there and I'm assuming it involves Snoke. But I think directly after Empire's End the Eclipse, Sloane, and everyone else at that rendezvous point, which is a pretty select group, are all headed for Csilla.

Perhaps the unknown threat Thrawn warned about from the Unknown Regions are the Chiss themselves...?

I don't think so as Thrawn wanted the Empire to help the Chiss against this threat in the unknown region. Now it could be against a splinter group of Chiss but Iam going for Snoke & whatever race he is.

We actually see the scene in the book in which Chiss decide to play out the 'exile' scenario, I cannot see them sending Thrawn to the Empire to find an ally against - themselves. :)

I am starting more and more to warm up to @Addi Ras 's idea that Snoke and whoever are his people are the new canon version of Yuuzhan Vong. But, who knows? We have to deal with (one) Snoke first.

O.K. The third reading of that Epilogue, lol. Eli uses the present tense - he believes - when talking about Thrawn.

You don't start the relationship with alien race by BS-ing them. So, I think our Grand Admiral is fine at this point in time - whenever that might be.

Eli Vanto is an amazing character and has a very interesting personality.
    --- Double Post Merged, Apr 24, 2017, Original Post Date: Apr 24, 2017 ---
The Chiss I think would side with neither the Resistance nor First Order, they would be out to control the Galaxy themselves, they have a slight disdain the rest of the Galaxy, and view it as a threat.
