TLJ 10 Likes/10 Dislikes

Yes, I love the idea of having nuance. It's not often easy to do online, but this thread is just the way to do it.

I'll start off the the dislikes, only cause D comes before L. LOL But also it allows me to leave on a positive note:

Dislikes (in no particular order)
1. The humor. It took me out of the film.
2. Canto Bight. Gosh, I really dislike that whole side plot. And for it to do what, tell us that rich beautiful people are bad? I'd prefer Johnson show us they are bad, not beat us over the head.
3. The Fathiers. God they looked bad. In a film that looked very good, they were very bad.
4. DJ. As an actor, I thought Benicio was poorly used. That character was blah for me.
5. Rey... I just felt like she came across as a bit haughty and too perfect. I think this could be linked to TFA. Had JJ made her lose the fight with Kylo, then it helps here I think. But yeah, she just came across as too perfect to me.
6. The lack of Jedi training. Really, I would get rid of the entire Canto Bight plot and have Luke actually train her.
7. Holdo. I really disliked her as a character and I hated the costuming they picked for her. Purple hair? WTF? And the maneuver...
8. Shirtless Kylo. Seriously, put a shirt on that boy! And those pants?
9. I really hated the Luke sucking on alien titty milk scene. I felt like that was totally the director trolling fans.
10. The idea of subverting fans. I think Johnson didn't subvert as much as he wants us to believe. In the end, the only thing I think he actually did subvert was the master/student relationship.
11. The caretakers on Ach-To. Really didn't like them or their costumes.
12. I know, I'm over 10, but I hated the bombers. Felt like they were just a plot device. Why so slow?
13. I really didn't like the music for this or for The Force Awkens. There are moments where I do, but in general it felt like Williams was mailing it in. I thought the music for the trialers was better.
Likes (again, in no particular order)
1. The cinematography. Both of the saga films under Disney have looked, and sounded, fantastic.
2. Porgs and crystal foxes. I really like them, so don't @me. LOL
3. While I didn't like the throne room fight, I do like the way it looks. Same for the "Holdo maneuver."
4. Directing of the actors. I think he got great performances out of everyone.
5. I am sure some didn't like Yoda as he was portrayed, but I liked seeing him again on screen.
6. I didn't like the excuse for it, but I do love the idea of grumpy, war torn and world weary Luke. Just feel it needed a better setup/explanation.
7. I did love the force projection.
8. I love the scene where Luke dies. Powerful. I'd not have killed him off in TLJ, but the scene was powerful.
9. Rose Tico. I like the idea of the character. Don't think she was well written, but I like the character.
10. I love the scene of the falcon flying into the interior of Crait. That looks bad ass.
11. The Island on Ach-To. Beautiful.
12. I love Crait and the scene with Kylo. Especially when They first face off. Very western feel to it.

 

But some of that cheese was like the finest aged cheddar!

 

10 Dislikes

1. Broom boy ending, always just music and images at the end of the movie there should be!
2. The whole Canto Bight sequence was a bit pointless, seemed to be there just to give Finn something too do.
3. The Mary Poppins Leia effect, okay with the idea but the execution was poor
4. Not enough Captain Phasma, R2D2 or Maz
5. CGI during the Canto Bight sequence not that great
6. Would have much preferred a time jump from Episode 7 to 8 but appreciate why they did not.
7. Humour far too cheesy and slap stick, TFA so much better in that regard
8. Hard to take the First Order serious when they have Eddie from Bottom in the ranks
9. Hard to take the Resistance serious when they have Will the intern from W1A in the ranks.
10. A bit too long a run time, I can only hold my bladder so long.

10 positives

1. Loved the space battle at the beginning with the bombers
2. Luke. Very happy what they did with his character, just how I imagined a lone isolated Jedi with his background would be.
3. Rey & Kylo vs Praetorian Guards was epic.
4. Hodo sacrifice scene
5. Crate cinematography looked beautiful.
6. Snoke's death (was not sure at first but love this now)
7. The whole Luke Vs Ren confrontation on Crate was superb
8. Leia was great in this film much better than TFA
9. Seeing Yoda and the fact he was a puppet !!!
10. Characterisations were really strong, they had purpose, believability and arcs

 

DISLIKES (it’s very difficult to find 10)
1: The fans
2: Finn’s pants (having seen his marvelous RoS pants, I wish he had worn them in TLJ too)
3: Missed opportunity with no hinting of a mole in the Resistance fleet. (Instead we’re told that FO analysts determine that the fleet is running out of fuel… A mole subplot would be great here)
4: DJ (I appreciate what del Toro was aiming for but I find the depiction too jarring for my taste)
5: Missed opportunity with the scene where Rey’s escape coffin is pulled into Kylo’s ship. I would have loved to see the craft being jerked violently out of the “sky” and pulled in. (No bigy, but I’d sure like to see that!)
6-10: I'm in a hurry and can’t think of anything more so I’ll just say “the fans” here.


LIKES (it’s very hard to choose only 10, but I’ll try)
1: Luke’s arc. Everything about Luke in this movie, really.
2: The projection trick climax and Luke’s subsequent tranquil death. *tears*
3: Throne Room sequence.
4: Rose Tico (one of my favorite SW characters of all times)
5: Paige Tico (her presence is HUGE in the film, despite her small part)
6: Leia overtly displaying her Force Power to save herself and carry on hope for the Resistance.
7: Leia putting an end to Poe’s mutiny *LOL!*
8: Kylo & Rey’s Force Skype relationship. Just brilliant stuff!
9: The broom boy plot. Again, fantastic storytelling, that.
10: Leia & Luke scene
