?

Too much emphasis on her father, let's go theorize Rey's mother

Yeah I can't decide whether I want to have a serious conversation or not! There are a lot of factors that go into the "collateral damage" argument. She could have been like those Death Star contractors. On the other end, Luke could have been reckless and created collateral damage where he didn't need to. For me, one of the beautiful parts of Star Wars is that it's not afraid to embrace objective right and wrong (again, not in every case but in some). And Luke was basically the embodiment of objective good in the OT. It would be a shame to go postmodern and make him good "only from a certain point of view".

but i don't think it needs to even go there. if Luke incidentally killed Rey's parents as part of the fight against the Empire or its remnants or whatever, it's not like he becomes a villain.

i feel like a lot of the themes they are working with in the ST are about the aftermath of war and sorting through the good and bad and what happens, in particular, to the innocent children of war. Rey, Ben, Finn, Hux, and even to some small degree Poe and Phasma, are all casualties of the galactic war in the OT. how they have coped with each of their particular challenges is an interesting cross-section of that good/bad fallout.

Rey seems upset when she comes out of the water. She has seen what happened in the past, she never quite understood it until now. She knows Luke is to blame, but then on the other hand needs him, perhaps belongs to him. It is the perfect reveal, the perfect dilemma. Luke killed his wife, Rey's mother, for whatever reason. But why did he do it? Pitty? Compassion? Did he need to save someone he loves? Was she a danger to him? Did she threathen him?

Why are we not talking about the mother!? :)

This all makes me think of this movie - Il y a longtemps qui je t'aime - Its a masterpiece. You'll understand what I mean.

I won't spoil why she, the main protagonist in the above movie, was in prison. That's what the movie is about. You should see it: it is very sad. The book is also wonderful!

Luke is Rey's father, Her mother died in the destruction of the new Jedi academy.
The same disaster that almost killed Snoke.
Luke Hid his child, from Ren and Snoke.

Luke then ran, crashed his ship on Ach-to, but not deliberately.
He has wanted to leave for years. But can now, that Rey is here.

...........and they already had Kylo stabbing his father in cold blood and ordering the execution of women and children. Disney does not play it safe.
