What if someone were to hack Disney's and/or Lucasfilms's IT networks to leak TFA?

With the premiere still months away and people appearing to be desperate for more reveals about TFA, could this happen? Could someone actually try to hack into their IT networks to leak out information about the movie?

People are getting desperate and you know that it's only a matter of time before some hacker tries to do something. We saw this happen to Sony - albeit for different reasons - so there's no reason to not believe someone with hacker skills would try to do this and that unfolding drama proved that no large corporation is safe.

[No, I am not a hacker myself. I have no skills when it comes to that sort of thing. Furthermore, this post is in no way. shape, or form meant as an endorsement nor encouragement for someone to engage in such unlawful activity]

I would be very very angry if somebody leaked anything huge as a result of hacking.

I suppose it could happen, though I would think that Disney would by default try to have more security in regards to such a large project, even before having to consider any neglected security holes after the Sony fallout.

In any case, I'd figure that were such a leak to take place, most of us here would not partake in the information revealed and instead wait until the December release to see anything. Rumors would indeed float about, with some being the actual spoilers witnessed from the leak (unbeknownst to us perhaps), but in a community like this I don't think it would be too bad.

We never suggested you were a hacker, if you were you would probably take over everybody's accounts empty the credits etc, Im joking BTW if hacker had the nerve to do that I would be annoyed big time.

I honestly cant support the idea. for one I want a finished product. It would be cheating and I would loose the sense of satisfaction.

For the record, I'm not necessarily referring to the leaking of actual footage of the film but more so leaking the actual plot and scene details in words.

But yeah, when it comes to hackers, you never know what they'll do.

That torrent would immediately be jacked into my head by my R2 unit.
Then my new Sith force lightning skills would make the hacker more machine than man, as they felt my hate flow through them from the interwebz.

I would rather speculate than have the entire plot laid out for me.

Well then that's a tricky rope we walk on then. Technically some would say such things have happened already, though they would be referring to people involved in the production and what they witnessed, not the finished film.

I do read the spoiler posts but thankfully it's almost impossible to tell which is closer to the truth as many of them seem to contradict each other in various ways, and the ones that turn out true (with what we've seen from official releases) aren't really that major. Speculation is fun. Spoilers can be fun (to the right people) if they're somewhat clouded and done in the sense of just adding some tidbits to speculation. Straight-up spoilers from the finished product aren't fun at all.

If something like this happened I would do Everything in my Power not to see any of it. That would probably include leaving this place until the movie is released. Just as a safety percaution to make sure I wouldnt get the whole thing spoiled.

    That's just it.

I think they have one copy of the movie. And that copy is probably sitting behind so much security and Bad Robot that you would need to give blood, your first born, SSN,and probably a few hundred dollars to even see the file name.

I doubt they have multiple copies laying around. Scenes yes, ILM probably has different versions of scenes. But the whole movie. NO way.

and this is someone who deals with Security in Computers.

Its more reasonable to expect a Script leak than a work-print.

As fun as all these little bits and pieces we're getting are, I simply have to see this on the big screen on opening day. If it were hacked and released I would immediately take all the related Star Wars sites, including this one (sorry), off my bookmarks and clear my history.

If I were LucasFilm I would have a ban on anything related to the film being stored on a internet capable computer. It's just too risky.

    What's an 'internet dummy'? :D

I rated you 'informative' because, you know, the obvious can be funny when pointed out the right way.... :D

Well... one would have to say if there were groups dedicated to this, they would already have done so... that being said, it isn't done.

One of the things that LFL pushes was the ability to distribute films to the theaters totally digital... on a dedicated tunneled network. And at the stage when it gets to that point, it will have to be a little more open...

Finally, once it gets TO the theaters, its in their hands. Any unethical employee could spoil it...

Would I watch it? Yeah... I would. Once it's out, it's out... I certainly hope I see it first in the theaters, but let's face it... once it is out, it will be impossible NOT to find out about it, even accidentally...

If I watched a bootleg, would I still watch it in theaters? Hell yeah... because regardless of the hows, wheres and whens... it is still Star Wars on the big screen, and that's what its about...

Now... the DAY it comes out, I hope to be in DC watching it with my father, but undoubtedly it will get leaked on the net at some point during that day. I hope I have the fortitude to remain busy that day, take a long ride up into the foothills of Virginia, and stay the hell away from any news... but if we are talking a leak a month or so out? I don't think I have that kind of resistance...

I remember seeing a workprint of ROTS before it was released in cinemas. I still went and saw it again.
