I voted A New Hope. All of the elements that make a Star Wars story are best represented in that film. The Empire Strikes Back is in many ways an "anti-Star Wars" film. At the time of release, it subverted much of what made A New Hope so appealing. Return of the Jedi seemed to be a throwback to the feel of A New Hope but out of the three of those original films, the first one did it best.

The Phantom Menace comes close to A New Hope but has a greater burden than that film when it comes to setting up what is to come. Attack of the Clones, like The Empire Strikes Back, is an atypical Star Wars film while Revenge of the Sith is about as far away as you can get from how the saga started.

How come this poll excludes The Force Awakens in favour of the spin-off movie?

Seems like the thread creator forgot to add one more option.

In terms of the question, I choose Episode V. It gives all that made Episode IV good and fixed all the issues that this fim had. Good acting, fun dialogue, fantastic action scenes (the lightsaber duel!), beautiful score and great expansion of the lore of the series. My only nitpick is that the second act is slightly to slow but except for that I absolutely love it.

I voted for ESP V from a purly film experience but it's a very close run between V IV from a emotional standpoint in fact if I just went on a first time viewing then IV would have won it way to hard just to pick one.

    ROTS is the best!

R1 came close to upstaging ROTS but not close enough!

My first thought after reading the title, "How do you define 'best'?"
Most watched? Doesn't dull with time (like tech advances)? etc...

Personally, it was the film that I'm most in the mood to watch; most like real-life (in that you don't always win). Locations (Hoth), cold & snowy by me. The music. Ships. Characters. Plot. Just the way it all comes together and you want more yet don't feel empty. And I kept coming back to ...

Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back

"The Empire Strikes Back" is the best one in terms of film making but my favorite one is actually "Return of the Jedi". It's really hard to choose between these two though.

    1) TESB
    2) ROTJ
    4) TFA
    5) ANH
    6) ROTS
    7) R1
    8) TPM
    9) AOTC

TFA is a far superior movie to ROTS in almost every measurable way such as acting, script, direction and story.

with Rogue One out on digital and being able to watch it again, it surprisingly holds up to more viewings. I have to think about my list more but it will be moving up not down.

    ESB is still the GOAT

No offense, but this is kinda immature of you. It's called to have a personal opinion for a reason. Do you see me rating your post with a Disagree even though I didn't like R1? No, because I appreciate your personal opinion.

Sry, usually I don't care about ratings but this one...

My problems with Rogue One are that it takes too long to get set up. If the entire movie were the last 1/3, it would be much higher on my list.
    --- Double Post Merged, Mar 27, 2017, Original Post Date: Mar 27, 2017 ---
I've been doing a rewatch of the entire saga over the past few days and its stunning how well TPM holds up over time. AOTC doesn't whatsoever. The effects look like a cartoon at times. ROTS ends really well, but the middle third just drags on and on. Again...to me...it doesn't hold up nearly as well. Over time and with more perspective, I'm sure the list will change again. These type of polls are so hard and kind of unfair. I'm not sure how you can equate a saga film with an anthology film and vice versa. Once Episode 9 premieres, I'm sure the list will look very different. Case in point...

TFA made ROTJ a better movie in my opinion because we end ROTJ with a twinge of sadness. It also made Empire a better movie because of Han and Leia and his death. Conversely, TFA made AOTC and ROTS worse movies because it showed you could absolutely tell these stories with practical action effects instead of constant green screen.

To me A New Hope is the best Star Wars film, because of the 8 films it's the only one that doesn't need the other films.

From start to finish A New Hope is a complete film, with an ending. All of the other films in the series depend on the others for a sense of completion. The Empire Strikes Back leads in the poll, but if it didn't have A New Hope to establish the characters, and if it didn't have Return of the Jedi for the payoff, it would be a very confusing film indeed.

A New Hope was nominated for best picture. It got by without the prequels for 22 years, and it didn't need the sequels to accomplish its plot.

If someone from a country where Star Wars never existed came and watched A New Hope they would understand it and enjoy it. To understand and appreciate the other films in the series they would need to watch multiple films.

I totally get this perspective. The ONLY reason why ESB is ahead of it in my opinion is because ESB to me created the mythology. ANH could have been the only film and Star Wars would still be revered. But to me ESB ensured the Star Wars universe would be a saga and a world wide cultural movement for generations to come.
