One thing that I always loved about Star Wars, was how it included ideas, concepts, plot points, designs etc. from a wide array of genres. At it's heart it is a space fantasy, but boy does it have a lot of other stuff too!
In the original trilogy, everything was thrown in the blender and given the Star Wars treatment:
The frontier/western, fairy tales, mining, smuggling, samurai, bounty hunters, aristocracy, dogfights, high tech, primitive tribes, trench warfare, buddhistic inspiration, the mafia, the nazis, and so on and so forth.

It left little for the prequels perhaps but these movies also added to the tapestry; there was the racing circuit environment; detective-like investigations; underwater environments; a diner; a futuristic city planet, a sinkhole world, a lava planet. It added government, clone facilities and hive creatures.

The question is, of course, what can Episode VII bring to the table of unique twists to familiar tropes? What kind of environments are still unexplored? What genres will we see mixed into the essence?

    Some ideas:
A ruin planet - an environment of obliterated buildings and vehicles
Archipelago planet - looks like we might get that one
    Mountain world

"Lesser" terrain types, like moors, savannah, taiga, or very strange worlds (ice volcanoes, planet shaped like crystal, a half planet)

As for genre, how about some Alan Quartermain-type of adventure? I admit its harder to come up with new angles here. Some cultures that could serve as inspiration that haven't been used yet?

Anyway feel free to add to this thread!!!

Star Wars, to me, is at it's best when it melds Western themes of frontiers and adventure (like literally some western films) with Eastern themes like the buddhistic inspiration you mention and meditation (the mystical side of the Force). It's difficult to say which new cultures could serve as inspiration since they often just get blended together between Western vs Eastern mythologies.

Love your ideas about Mountain/moor/savannah type worlds. Mustafar was one of the coolest planets in the PT.

I know this might sound lame (at the risk of getting lightsaber-happy a la AotC), but I really want to see an orange and yellow colored lightsaber.

I also heard a rumor that the plot would center around a Cold War type story. If the Original trilogy was based on elements of the Revolutionary War and WWII, it would be really cool to see how they expand on Cold War elements.

A cool scene that reverses the typical lightsaber fights of the previous movies. My idea of this instead of two jedi vs a sith how about a jedi verses multiple sith for a change.

Alan Quartermain? I wouldn't mind seeing some Indiana Jones adventure. :p

I wouldn't mind seeing a lightsaber duel in zero G's but that's not really fresh. They had a similar battle in TCW. On the big screen and live action would be epic though.

    A female lead.
What that has already happened! God bless you JJ:p
I do want to see a female Jedi kick some serious butt though that will make my 2015 for sure

I like the idea of a Jedi vs multiple Sith, that would be a nice change like one serene Jedi vs 2-3 angry out of control Sith

here is an idea, the rebirth of the mandalorian culture led by mandolore Boba Fett, the return of a long hidden and dormant sith empire from Dromand Kaas, but best of all id really like to see someone quite literally walk the path of Darth Reven, the whole jedi falls to dark side then is redeemed and eventually becomes neither dark nor light but rather a combination of both thereby truly bringing balance to the force

I would love to see a re-rise of the Mandolorians though not necessarily led by an old Boba or any Fett for that matter (although I wouldn't be upset by that leadership either). Something tells me that the ST just might present the Mandolorian element in some important role but the inherent issue with this I think is that we've kinda already seen this when you consider the dna of the original clone troops.

I'm kinda thinking that we may see an aspect of this as it relates to Luke's personal part of the story. I don't buy the notion that he will have willingly, or, by force, decided to embrace the dark side, but his knowledge and wisdom of the Force, from experience, and, gained over all of this time, will possibly have granted him a truly unique and way more complete understanding of it that some people around him will find a bit off-putting or even unsettling.

As far as "freshness" goes, I'd like to see a padawan/Jedi-in-training actually have to seek out their saber crystal(s) and put together the weapon, using the Force, on screen ;)

For me it's interesting to see how certain ideas have become canon in many fans' minds - example from post above: crystals are needed for lightsabers, which is not heard or seen in the movies. I have a feeling J.J. Abrams will screw with some people's perceptions of Star Wars with his movies. I mean, the crystals needed for lightsaber construction always struck me as a bit ... un-Star Wars like, something that would suit better a setting like Star Trek. Anyway, not to crap all over your wish to see lightsaber crystals because I wouldn't care that much if they did turn up in the next films, the point was that there are a lot of dreams/wishful thinking based on concepts/ideas that actually aren't movie canon. This might become a big surprise for many fans once Episode VII airs and it goes in different, unexpected directions. At least I hope that's what the film does, while staying awesomety times infinity (x-wing)(x-wing)(x-wing)(x-wing)Swoop

    -Sith Mystics/Magic/Tombs = A Story in a Story
-The Underworld and Hives of Scum and Villainy
-Revisiting some old places that changed= Naboo, Coruscant, Bespin, Kashyyyk
-New Planets and Places from the EU that are more commonly known, Nal Hutta etc.
-The New Stormtrooper design troubles me even if it looks actually well done...I hope to see more bulky and WWII designs or 80s designs mixed.

What I find interesting about this topic is the word "fresh". Considering Lucas wanted Star Wars to be a modern fairy tale and follow traditional storytelling. ;-)

Obviously we are not talking about that though.

I don't think the overall story will be earth shattering, but just like the other films it's the little things that help push Star Wars over the top to greatness. Like creative planets and aliens/monsters.

What could blow this film wide open with freshness is going to the Sith homeworld like recent rumors suggested. Like Moraband. My speculation sense is telling me there could be multiple Sith planets. Hope not.

Either way I think something genuinely scary that will make kids close their eyes in fear would be great.

I've always wanted to see someone construct their lightsaber, crystals or no crystals.

Why do I feel like so many people haven't seen TCW?

There are crystals in the lightsabers. It's canon.

Yes, something approaching the horror/mystery genre would be cool. Now, I guess it depends on the age of the viewer (because my eight year old sure finds the Hoth Wampa scary) what is scary or not, but I would like to see some kind of ... horrific input. You know, shadows moving along the walls, always out of sight, flickering lights in a downed old cruiser half full of muddy water, exploring a creepy place, a "BOO!" scene...

As for the use of the word "fresh", I meant some element that hasn't been done yet but could expand the setting but that was so long and troublesome to write.

As for mixing up some ideas here, how about going back to Coruscant but it is now a ruin world (almost like a planet-wide "dungeon of dangers"), which could be pretty spooky once you get down to the lower levels.

Hate to nit-pick but Boba Fett isn't Mandalorian so he has zero chance of leading them.

^^^ Thank you. Granted this hasn't been depicted on film (yet), TCW IS canon. So unless the GFFA story group decides to renege on this concept, then its certainly not of a realm of possibility to be shown on the big screen. This thread is about what would be considered fresh- not what the Vegas odds are of seeing certain things on screen

Well to be honest (since I brought up the veracity of them crystals) I have only seen The Clone Wars in bits and pieces though I mean to do a bingewatch sometime this decade. But then again when I think of Star Wars, in my mind the original trilogy only is canon. That being said, JJ Abrams/Lawrence Kasdan can *still* choose to ignore elements like this. Again, not on a crusade against crystals here. I just feel that the Clone-cartoons came up with a lot of ideas that maybe could be done better in the movies...or worse, for that matter.

And, since I haven't seen everything, maybe there's pure gold as well.

Back to topic, one element that I could enjoy seeing expanded in Star Wars are places mentioned but not seen: Corellia, Kessel, Tanaab, Sullust.

^^^I'm with ya on these. I actually wanna see a sequence involving someone HAVING to make the Kessel run. It would be a nice nod to the mentioning of it in the OT, and also I just think it would be so tense and fun to see. Right now, I'm of the mind that Corellia will be a given ;)
