Hey that's funny, I didn't even consider the Kessel Run, I was thinking of Threepio's line about the spice mines there :) Kessel has twice the potential then :)

I'd really love to see a darksider use a holocron. It'd be a great way to include any old Sith they please. In particular, I'd want to see Plagueis since he was never actually shown.

Two things: where specifically in canon does it state that the Fett's are not Mandalorians?

Also, why would anyone think that, after limiting the canon to the movies and TCW, that they would just arbitrarily retcon something at this stage?

It's not stated in canon that they aren't Mandalorians, but Filoni said it in an interview during TCW special featurettes. And technically speaking it's NOT a retcon since it was never stated that he was Mandalorian in the movies and definitely NOT in TCW. In fact, nothing was ever revealed about Boba Fett, or the idea that his armor was Mandalorian, in the films. The only thing we knew for sure was that he was a male, humanoid, bounty hunter named Boba Fett. Only during the PT did we learn he was a clone of Jango Fett, another bounty hunter. We don't even know what race they are.

I don't know if this totally relates to 'what would be considered fresh', but I don't want the multiple endings like TPM & ROTJ. I am just not a huge fan of the quick edits where there are 3 or 4 endings going on all at once from those movies. I like the more intimate endings like the other movies where everything leads to one planet. Whether it is Cloud City in ESB, Yavin in ANH, or even Geonosis in AOTC, those movies flow so much better at the end then when you multiple things going all at once.

I have always thought about a force sensitive with lightsaber stranded on a planet full of undead, zombie like humans or creatures in a survival, horror type of scenario. Then the book Red Harvest came out, but it didn't capture my imagination, the way I was thinking, Rob Zombie directed.

True but we do know from TCW that the armor the Fetts wear is definitely Mandalorian. So it's certainly ambiguous.

I'd love to see a sequence (I remember dreaming this up when we were waiting for the prequels) where characters fight each other/duel while navigating speeders through a maze (a sewer for example). We kind of got something like it in All On The Computer, but that sequence lacked tension, believabilty and characters I cared about.

Another cool location would be a planet that didn't rotate; half covered in icy darkness, half a searing desert, with a looping city along the equator where life existed in the eternal twilight.

I think an element in the movies could feel extremely fresh if it like specifically went against, or even the opposite of something established in the Extended Universe. Like Star Wars fans used to know that for example Corellia was like a grassy American western spaceport planet where Han Solo is from. So it would be cool if they had Corellia but it was like a grey cratered airless planet with big O'Neill-like space stations where they build the Star Destroyers or something. I'd also like to see a villain who's like a sleazy hard-drug-doing 80s business guy. Oh and it would be cool to like have one of the characters is part of like a Hitler Youth but for the Galactic Empire.

I think the writing team have really got their work cut out for them in trying to create something that still looks and feels like Star Wars, and incorporates the Kurosawa-esque stories, whilst feeling sufficiently fresh and new (with them being set in the universe's future), but at the same time, not changing things too much and alienating fans. They're also going to have a hell of a time trying to make the story interesting and exciting without being too predictable - how many films have you seen recently that are blatant re-hashes of the same old set of storylines, just with different characters and locations?

Keeping the ST fresh is going to mean new ideas, simple enough for the younger viewers to see and understand the set-up for, whilst simultaneously being complex and intricate enough to keep the hardcore viewers intrigued enough to not only be able to enjoy the movie, but also want to take the younger viewers to see the movie again, or at least go see the sequels, since they hold the purse-strings. For example, I hate rom-coms and their formulaic, predictable plots that you can see from a mile off. I hate obvious plot devices - seemingly innocuous bits of dialogue with lingering shots on a seemingly pointless item or activity that will blatantly come up again later as a means of defeating someone. And I hate glaringly obvious plot-holes where you find yourself staring at the screen, aghast, saying things like, "so why don't they just do what they did earlier and rescue them like this?" JJ and his team have definitely got their work cut out for them....

If they want to go really fresh (in one sense of the word) they surprise us all by...having Luke and Leia in a relationship, Jaime and Cersei-style. Now that would blow everyone's minds, since everybody thinks Leia giving Luke an innocent kiss or two in Star Wars and Empire is totally awkward and insane. And if you don't know who Jaime and Cersei are, well, you are missing out on something (unless you are underage, then I assume you can wait a while until you get to know this particularly great literary couple).

    Edit:
I really like your idea about going back to Kurosawa and see if there's more gold to be mined there for the Star Wars saga.
    Edit 2:
I didn't really mean I'd want to see Luke and Leia in a relationship. But I do love me some Game of Thrones (or rather, the book series, A Song of Ice and Fire).

Lucas would argue with you that Jaime & Cersei are having a Luke/Leia relationship, as he was the first one to give us some incestry on the big screen! ;)

And for anyone who isn't watching Game of Thrones, you seriously need to start as its a great show!

Well, yes, he could, but I think calling Luke and Leia's pre-Jedi flirtations incestuous is a bit strong, to be honest. An innocent kiss - mostly to put Han off - is not quite where you have Jaime and Cersei, if you know what I mean :D
Lannisters keep it in the family.. ^^

I think having a pretty heroine save the day for once.

    Daisy, I'm talking about you. :D :D

And pretty she is! I agree, it would be fun if they had a heroine save the day, perhaps rescuing old Master Luke from some threat.

Yeah, I was just joking about Lucas and incestous ideas for SW. Although I wish Leia never said after learning she is Lukes sister, "Somehow I always knew."

My feeling has always been that Star Wars was always at its best when Lucas was stealing quality material for it. IMHO, the new production team would do well to bear that in mind.

Look at ANH. Even though subsequent drafts of the screenplay moved further from Kurasawa's "Hidden Fortress", the overall theme of "rescue the princess and deliver her and her treasure to her hidden base" remained. The space battles were influenced heavily by Dambusters, 633 Squadron and The Battle Of Britain, to the point where specific shots were recreated from them. And then, of course, there was the heavy influence of Flash Gordon and similar science fantasy serials. (And though I've never seen a quote to back this up, I'd also argue that Lucas got some inspiration for Han and Chewbacca from Bogart and Brennan's characters in "To Have And Have Not", albeit without Brennan's character's alcoholism and outright buffoonish behavior.)

And let's also not forget that long before the Force was treated as a series of leveled videogame powers, it was an amalgam of elements of various world mythologies and shamanic traditions, particularly those highlighted in the works of Joseph Campbell and Carlos Castaneda (though Castaneda's work was more fictional.)

One thing I'd love to see is a Heart of Darkness type story in the Star Wars world (which would also harken back to Lucas' early involvement in what became Apocalypse Now.) I also always wanted to see a Chandler/Hammett type detective character in Star Wars. IMHO, that would have been the perfect "regular guy" type character to ground the PT the way Han Solo so effectively grounded the OT. But perhaps a character like that could be worked into the ST somehow.
