Why we really have to talk about Poe

Ok, I know Poe's was supposed to die.
    I know.
I also think - honestly - that all the callbacks, references and parallels we may find (about any character and/or scene) don't have to mean something more.
That they don't have to hide a further or deeper meaning, that they don't have to foreshadow a character's story arc. Not always at least.
I think they may be just cool references, callbacks, parallels the SWU is full of.
People at LucasFilm - and all the writers - are fully aware of how much we do like all this kind of stuff.

This is what I really think and what I keep telling to myself...
Especially becouse it's a while now, that I'm obsessed with something
I've found on Poe Dameron: Flight Log
and now that this news ( http://makingstarwars.net/2017/03/star-wars-the-last-jedi-and-a-trees-fate/ )
about the force tree burning has came out, more than ever.
And before I copy what I've found, let me say, that the burned force tree is just one of the references.
Becouse it is so full to be almost a riddle.

This is all the section from Poe Dameron's Flight Log:
(It's conversation between him and BB8)

POE: There was the time I rigged a pair of old podracer engines to our koyo picker. I wanted to take a joyride in the A-wing to see a meteor shower up close, but had to finish my chores first.

Whit those rochet engines attached, I picked the grove in a matter of minutes, compared to the hours it usually took.

Let's just say, my dad was not happy - and I never did that again.

The fiery exhaust from the podracer's engines singed the tree Luke Skywalker had given to my parents.
Supposedly it was one of the last surviving trees from the Jedi temple on Coruscant.

    BB8:whhheeeeoo!

POE: Tell me about it. The thing was in my backyard like any other ordinary tree. As a kid I used to swing from its branches.

Well my dad made me spend the next year coaxing the scorched tree back to health.
I learned a valuble lesson that day: rushing trough a job can cause unintended consequences.

    BB8: warp-warp-warp

POE: Yeah, patience has never been my strong suit.

First. This is a farm boy's story. A far boy who later on became a pilot. The BEST PILOT in THE GALAXY and BELW UP the STAR KILLER BASE.
Fine, but... who was a FARM BOY later known as the BEST PILOT in GALAXY becouse he BLEWED UP the DEATH STAR? Luke.
And who was a farm boy that had to FINISH HIS CHORES first and then go to WASTE his TIME? Luke (EP.IV, Uncle Owen: You can waste time with your friends when your chores are done).

Add to this what LEIA says to POE in Before the Awekening
"You remind me of my brother." Leia said softly. "Fly like him, too, apparently."

And then compare this 2 bits

EP.IV (Before the attack to the the Death Star)
CHIEF: This R2 unit of your seems a bit beat up. Do you want a new one?
LUKE: Not on your life! That little droid and I have been through a lot together.

POE'S FLIGHT LOG (before the attack to the Star Killer base)
Poe(to BB8): Just overjoyed you’re in the socket again, wouldn’t want to fly this mission with any other droid.

Let's say that there are plenty of parallels between Luke and Poe.
    Interesting. But, wait a moment...
    There's another thing.
    The PODRACER.
Poe didn't drive a podracer, but he "almost" did, right?

    Who drove PODRACER? Anakin.
Who was - before Luke - the BEST PILOT IN THE GALAXY ? Anakin.
Who was IMPATIENCE? Luke, as his father Anakin before him.

But who as child used to spend the nights WATCHING THE STARS? Anakin (EP. I).

Therefore we have to say, at least, that there are plenty of parallels between Poe on one side, and Luke and Anakin on the other side.

I said at least, becouse when I've figured that, suddenly I've figured something else, that could be huge.

I know BLACK is a badass colour that fits badass people. And Poe is a badass pilot.

But... what is usually related to black in the SWU?
The Empire and Bad guys, right?

    H*** s-h-i-t!

Ok. Who before Poe, was THE BEST PILOT IN GALAXY, so much so he COULD FLY ANITHING, even PODRACER, had a BLACK HELMET, a BLACK STAR-FIGHTER and was "de facto"... THE FU*****G BLACK LEADER?

    Coincidence?

    I know. It's crazy.
And the craziest thing is you don't even need to read the novels to notice all of this. Beside the podracer reference, everything pointing to some kind of parallel Poe/Vader was there, hidden in plane sight, since TFA came out.

But it is too crazy. So much so, that to convice my self I was wrong, I've started to re-wathc TFA.

The thing is: I have found other clues. Some of them so cool that the way I look at TFA totaly changed (in a better way).

If you think it's too crazy, stop me now.
I'm half sure it is. But the other half of me...

EDIT: About TFA: what if I tell you that there's the chance that evey single scene he's in is a mirror of Vader in Ep. IV? So much so it makes perfect sense Poe and Rey don't share a line of dialague in the all movie.
Beside what happens with Finn when they first meet, becouse that is a mirrow of Ep III first and last scenes of Anakin + Obi Wan. And it makes perfect sense too: their first meeting is the mirror of the back story between Anakin + Obi Wan. And it is also an homage (I think) to the ring composition method GL used making the PT (according whom EP III is a parallal/mirror of EP IV)

This was kind of difficult to follow. What's the take away here? Poe is a good pilot like Luke/Anakin?

He's a great pilot who'll in a few months will give us more memorable scenes to remember.

Sorry for my English. (if that's the problem)
However, I'm just saying, there are a lot of references connecting Poe and Luke, and - and that's what really surprised me -
a lot between Poe and Anakin/Veder too.
In the novels and in the movie.
And of course those could be just cool callbacks, kind of easter eggs (call them as you wish). Nothing more.
    I don't want to say - for example - Poe's Luke child.

However, once I've figured those first "callbacks/references" Poe/Anakin (essentially the Black Leader staff) I've asked myself if there could be others.
And there are ( I guess) a lot, really a lot, in TFA. So much so I saw things I haven't noticed before.
The key is looking at Poe's scenes comparing them to what Vader is doing in ep IV. And he's always doing the opposite of what Vader does in ep. IV.
Somethimes is more obvious, sometimes is more sublte.
The only exceptions are the first scenes with Poe and Finn: from their "meeting" inside the space station - sorry I don't remember the name of it - till their crash of Jakku. That is in fact how their (P+F) story as friends begins. And it's a mirror (the opposite) of what happens between Anakin and Obi Wan in ep. III (of course not everything that happens in ep. III, but the first an last scenes of A/v + OW: start and end). Meaning that the parallel VII-III here is "how the story of those 2 friends (P+F) starts - how the story of those 2 ex-friends ended"

But I guess I shall post something in the TFA forum. Honestly - at least - what I've noticed it's lot of fun.

If you ask me, do I think all those things, mean something more (again, for example: Poe's Luke child) I'd say I'm not sure.
But... we are here to dibate.

Good, because we know the identity of Poe's parents.

I love Poe's character. He was underused in TFA and it's speculated that his role was expanded in the next film after TFA came out. I don't think there's a mystery surrounding his character if that's what you're implying. Lucasfilm has generated a lot of content around his character which suggests they're not holding anything back.

you want me to say "well. we've thought we knew who Leia parents were" :)
Or "no one would have figured that Vader was Luke's father"
    Won't you? :)

No. I'm just saying the writers have done a brilliant job with TFA.
Much more than I've figured till now.
That's for sure. But as told I guess I have to explain many things (elsewhere) to let you fully understand what I mean.
Having said so, I guess the rest of the content that came out is not going to build a "mystery" (see the things from
Poe's Flight Log I've talked above) but probably just a backstory that "may" ("may") play a part (small, big, I don't know) in the next movies.
That given what you're saying: becouse hey're are expanding the character.

Despite his limited screentime and disjointed role in TFA, Poe has potential to be a beloved character. I've enjoyed his comic, and the Shattered Empire series focused on his parents and their connection with Luke, Han, and Leia. If we take these stories at face value, Poe was born to Shara and Kes Dameron. Even if you leave the possibility that Poe is not their child, he was born two years after the Battle Of Yavin, that's one year before The Empire Strikes Back, and two years before Return Of The Jedi.

This means there is no conceivable way that he could legitimately be a child of the Skywalkers.

But he definitely shares a deep connection with Luke; not only did Luke give Poe's mother a Force Tree, Skywalker also worked very closely with them.

Has the possibility that Poe is FS ever been raised before? Maybe Luke knew (hence the force tree gift) but for undisclosed reasons did not seek to train him?

You could definitely make that argument. When The Force Awakens was still in production I was assuming everyone was Force Sensitive as if Oprah were handing out free cars; "You're a Jedi, you're a Jedi, you're a Jedi!" Alas that was not meant to be, at least not implicitly.

The only problem with this theory is that Luke was willing to train multiple students, so why wouldn't he have taken Poe as an apprentice?

As it stands, I think Rey is our only Force Sensitive protagonist, but anything is possible.

Great observations. I never once thought that he was to be killed off. (They can lie all they want about their own actions, just not those of the characters.) The way they went on about Poe being the best pilot where-ever got a bit tedious. And the force tree seems to be popping back up as an element of the new movie. And it does look like they have a very intentional symbolic framework to relate these new stories to the originals.

No. Cmon. Or maybe Rey was lying to Han?

Do we really know that Luke had students other than Ben? In TFA Han only says that Luke was trying to start a new generation of Jedi, and that one boy destroyed it. I think this could be one of the big twists - whatever Luke was doing did not involve any others. Maybe his new Jedi would be force trees, but Ben burnt them down.

The TFA visual dictionary says that Kylo's prowess with a lightsaber earned him his nickname as "Jedi Killer". That pretty much implies that there were other students and Kylo killed them.

    That's why I said I don't think (at all) he's Luke child.
I may add, I don't think he may be Anakin reincarnated (he was born before Vader died).
Still the parallels are there, curiously.
But they maybe just cool references, nothing more.

However to play the part of The Devil's Advocate....
We never saw Shara pregnant. Right? Maybe they've adopted an orphan, Poe.
If you read the novels (canon) about Luke in the years between ANH and ESB (so in the years that matter) he goes around the galaxy not leaving as a Jedi.
He meets a girl he falls for and she dies. But that proves only he's not yet committed to a life of not attachment.
Maybe he will meet another girl - before going to Hoth, before meeting Yoda etc... - something happens, they'll neer see each other again, she dies etc...
To be 100% honest, a backstory like this implies less problems than any thoery I've read about Rey as Luke child.
You don't have to explain the audience why a Jedi had a child, why Luke lost him or leaft him with bad people etc...
Those wanting a new Skywalker hero will be happy.
Those wanting Luke to be true to the Jedi (old) rules too: he wasn't a Jedi, when that happened.

Still I don't think they will do it.

However, I'm trying to put together all the TFA staff. I'm trying to do it, as best as I can (I know my English is not good enough).
I'm very curious to read your reactions then...

Luke definitely had multiple students; The Force Awakens visual dictionary explicitly states "Kylo Ren betrayed the other Jedi students studying with Master Luke Skywalker."

There's definitely a great many parallels and homages in Poe's story, which absolutely can feel forced at times, and entertaining in others. In Abrams bid to alter the script and have Poe survive, without actually correcting the story beats, we're left with a cardboard character portrayal that hinges on the most basic traits. That's a true shame, too, because Oscar Isaac is a talented actor.

I honestly don't personally believe Poe could be adopted, the comics made such a strong effort to denote a likeness with his parents.

I like to think the two knew each other at some point before Ben became Kylo Ren, creating a jealousy and rivalry for Leia's attention. Of course Poe never noticed, but Ben was left stirring in his contempt and jealousy.

I would have love this story. But not. Before the Awaking tells how Leia and Poe met. That was the first time they've seen each other.
So I doubt he and ben knew each other.
At the same time Poe seems unaware Kylo is Ben (or Leia's child).

was he? but was he really? we all know about how Oscar met JJ in paris and was offered a small role, and that he would die early in TFA. He was subsequently told when he accepted that small role that the part had been re-written and he wouldn't die at all.

funny that nobody really discusses Poe having a big impact on this trilogy... is it because we all know in the back of our minds that he was never originally supposed to make it to TLJ?

It definitely impacts my judgment. Abrams made minuscule effort to revise the story and incorporate Poe into the film in a more natural development, leaving his character hollow. Whatever role Poe plays in The Last Jedi, I simply hope his arc is structured and notable, and not nonexistent as it was in TFA.
