I've said this before but I really do think that Michael Giachino would be the most logical choice in my opinion ...

So for whatever reason, I forgot who Giancchino was and I thought he was Kevin Kiner, the guy who scores Rebels and did score TCW, lol.

I could see Giancchino potentially taking over; I've never really had a complaint about one of his scores, but I also don't remember many of them. I think he's a good "in-the-moment" composer, not necessarily as iconic as Williams. Then again, Desplat's not exactly a household name either, but the fact that he's scoring Rogue One makes me think he'd be next-in-line after Williams.

Kiner is also worthy of consideration, in my opinion. He does good work on the animated shows, even if he's mainly re-mixing existing JW themes; there was a good amount of original material in TCW, though it sometimes felt intentionally toned-down for younger audiences. I would like to hear what he could do on an anthology flick, or a live-action series.

I never liked Kiner's score work in TCW .

To each their own. It's not something I listen to regularly, but I feel it usually fits the episode pretty well. I don't think he's prolific enough to be a serious contender, but I think he's worth a consideration.

Ramin Djawadi? His work on Iron Man would actually make say no; it's very fitting for that movie, but guitar-driven themes and rock-music samplings don't mix with Star Wars. However, he's also the guy who wrote the theme to Game of Thrones, and that makes me reconsider him. Interesting...we shall watch his career with great interest (pwned).

Hopefully, we'll get an announcement this summer if Williams is coming back for Episode 8. I think it was the summer of 2013 when the TFA announcement was made, no?

He wrote the scores for all the seasons of GoT, including the upcomming season 6. Not just the main theme, though I might misunderstand your wording. Anyhow, he's also composing Warcraft: The Movie, and I'm exited to see how it does in that setting. It will be interesting, because the Warcraft universe has hours of iconic music in the existing games, that he will have to build upon (atleast I hope he does, as I was once an avid player of the games). If he does that well, there's a chance he could also keep the iconic style that Williams has brought to Star Wars.

I kind of figured he did all the music for GoT, but the main theme is the one even people that don't watch the show know. Good to hear he's doing the Warcraft movie! I'll be interested to see how that turns out; it'd be cool to see him get a shot at an anthology movie if his Warcraft score is up to snuff.

Ramin Djawadi? His style is very far removed from Williams' (plus I personally don't really like him as a composer (though Pacific Rim was good))

Great new update @MagnarTheGreat!!!! Can't believe you came across this awesome news. Hope he scores the new film even if he can't conduct all of it with his bad health problems that plagued him during the conducting of the TFA score. What they don't show you in the bonus features was one of his proteges during some of the scoring sessions doing the conducting in his place while he rested and gave tips.

My vote for the eventual replacement is Joel McNeely. He's already proven himself as a competent composer/adapter of Star Wars music with his phenomenal Shadows of the Empire score:
Skip to the end - it's pure Williamsesque beauty:

I like the guy who did Jurassic Park, Indiana Jones, E.T. , Superman, Jaws, the first three Harry Potter movies....oh wait :p

But what about the possibility of for example Howard Shore (LOTR and the Hobbit) working together with John Williams on VIII and then Williams passes the torch on to him for IX and only acts as a consultant? (if we are lucky that the genius of John Williams is still with us seeing his age)

I personally don't like the idea of him "passing the torch."

me neither. In an ideal world John Williams will never die and he will be able to compose until Episode XVIII and further.

Would you rather have someone else just compose VIII and IX from "scratch" and no involvment of John Williams? Just curious.

Yeah that would be better...maybe have John as a consultant similar to George Lucas.
