Spoilers for The Rise of Skywalker to follow in this thread.

With the trilogy now complete, it naturally changes the way we see the previous films. Obviously, The Last Jedi had been a contentious chapter in the Saga. But does the new context given in The Rise of Skywalker change your opinion of TLJ? For better or for worse?

Personally, my experience of TLJ is enhanced by TROS. I enjoyed much of TLJ, but it left me with the sinking feeling that this trilogy just wouldn't matter to the Saga. I expected TLJ to show why this trilogy mattered to the Saga, how it increased the stakes from the previous trilogies or connected back to the Skywalker legacy. And it just didn't.

The Rise of Skywalker, on the other hand, makes this trilogy connect to the rest of the Saga. And now I can watch The Last Jedi and relax a bit, knowing that this story really does have a place in the larger scheme of things. I can enjoy the ride.

So for me, the completed trilogy has enhanced my TLJ experience. How about you? I know some people felt burned by the way TROS "retcons" TLJ (although I would argue it doesn't retcon, it simply adds detail).

    My opinion hasn't changed.

TLJ is the best SW sequel. The only that I consider a masterpiece.

I know that ROTS explained some things that happened in TLJ like super Leia in Space. But this doesn't change anything for me. I already loved that scene before TROS came out.

My opinion changed slightly. I'm still not a huge fan of TLJ, but at least Rian had a clear vision and he wanted to tell a story he personally really cared about. I respect that very much now.

After watching TROS I'm really interested in knowing Rian's ideas for IX.

Same here. You got to give him that. Things like JJ telling us that Rey is a no one is important to the story he wanted to tell... What happened to that?

My feelings about TLJ are pretty much the same but I did feel like the ROS complimented TLJ. My best friend who hated TLJ now has a different view of the movie after seeing ROS. He appreciates TLJ now, FWIW. I do have a feeling 10 years or so, people will have a better appreciation of TLJ, kind of like whats happening with the PT.

My opinion has changed alot, now the that Trilogy is complete. My biggest beef with TLJ is I didn't get the payoff from the directions it took in the movie that I disagreed with. TROS changed all that, and has made TLJ a better movie for me. I never felt that payoff with the way Luke was portrayed, but TROS Hopeful Luke now contrasts nicely with TLJ Grumpy Luke (and TFA MIA Luke). It created a 3 movie arc of his character from MIA to hermit to hopeful and that works for me now. I wasn't a fan of killing Snoke, but the return of the Emperor (and now Snoke was just a pawn of his plan) works fine for me now as it was the better choice in the end.

I guess my point is that I never disliked TLJ as a movie, it was more about the decisions in the movie that never sat well with me. That has all changed now with TROS, so I can enjoy TLJ for the movie it is. At this point, I think that we all look at the movies differently so we all have to sort out what works for US the best. I rewatched TLJ after seeing TROS in the theaters, and enjoyed it more than I did in the last 2 years.

It was a long 2 year journey where as I never gave up on the film. I didn't bash it for the sake of bashing it like some of the fandom (especially the usual suspects on YouTube). I wanted answers as to what the fans were seeing that I didn't see, and many here gave some interesting observations. I probably will never see the film that exact way, but I've come around and TROS helped alot. I can finally say I'm satisfied with the ST now (something I couldn't say just a month ago).

I like it even more now that TROS had come out. I still have mixed feelings with this new movie and one of those problems was that it played things safe.

TLJ took risks and was legitimately the most fun I’ve ever had while watching a movie in the theater. I never knew what would happen next and the audience I was with on opening night was having a blast along with me.

I read all of the leaks for TROS, so that admittedly tampered with my one viewing experience so far. Despite that, I still feel that the movie was trying too hard to please fans instead of telling a great story; the opposite of TLJ in my opinion.

As it stands, TLJ remains my favorite film of the Sequel Trilogy and I’ll hopefully enjoy my second viewing of TROS more. (If I ever make it to the theater since all of my planned viewings had to be postponed.) :p

After seeing TROS, I have even more appreciation for TLJ. TLJ is the one movie of the sequel trilogy that I feel was at least attempting take the Star Wars story into a new and interesting direction. TFA was an homage to A New Hope and TROS continued to beat the nostalgia horse. TLJ has its share of flaws but its the most original Disney-era film.

I wish that Episode 9 would have done more to capitalize on what TLJ set up. I found the idea of Luke Skywalker igniting hope in the galaxy to be really fascinating. There should have been a longer time-jump in order to show how much Luke changed things. I also would have preferred Rey staying a nobody. That scene between her and Kylo after the team-up fight is the one of the best scenes in the entire saga. Now JJ has under minded it.

So after TROS, TLJ has become solidified in my ranking as #5 after the OT and Revenge of the Sith.

I thought I couldn't love The Last Jedi more, but after seeing TROS I do, I really, really do. Mainly because TROS left me so cold and the little excitement I felt at certain moments wore off on second viewing. I was thinking about TLJ for months afterwards, I can't remember a single line from TROS that wasn't in the trailers.

So, yes, my opinion changed insomuch that I now like The Last Jedi even more.

I appreciate TLJ a LOT more than I did before. My problems with it (Finn and Poe's character arcs, the needless death of Akbar, how LONG the climax is, how both sides are just gone in the end) still stand, but I can look back and say "wow, at least they HAD character arcs.
I respect RJ a heck of a lot more than I did, and I respected him a lot already.

So I think it's better than TROS, but still not as good as TFA.

About the same, I’d say. TROS doesn’t really seem to me like a genuine sequel to TLJ. Most of the larger story threads introduced in Ep8, in my opinion, are only paid lip service to while others a basically repeated, but in JJ’s voice instead. They just don’t quite fit together for me. Two different pieces from two different stories, that are only connected because the episode number says they are. Just my take :)

I had already liked TLJ quite a bit, and viewing TRoS hasn't really changed this for me. That said, seeing the final film and viewing the trilogy as a whole does give it all the added benefit of a sense of "completeness" about it, regardless of however rushed certain bits are.

TLJ is still one of my favorite SW films.
In hindsight, it's sort of a miracle it exists at all right now given the landscape of blockbuster films.

TROS didn't provide much for me to alter anything on TLJ or even TFA. It felt separate.

I still can't sit through the Last Jedi it still feels like a director more intent on shocking and subverting than telling a story. I also find the slapstick humor with Hux just unwatchable, and just thinking about the Benny Hill style lightsaber toss angers me.

What I will say though after seeing Rise of Skywalker I can see more why Rian Johnson did what he did. There was obviously no plan and he didn’t know were the story was going to end up and it wasn’t his job to work it out so he thought it would be fun to just throw all the metaphorical balls in the air so that's what he did.

TROS has made me even more frustrated than ever with TLJ. The ONLY thing worthwhile TLJ brought to the table imo was the force bonds between Kylo and Rey and I thought TROS did a great job of leveraging those to the benefit of the TROS story, but otherwise I see little or no reason to even watch TLJ - it adds nothing else to the narrative. The entire sequel trilogy would have been better served to be in JJ’s hands - he pretty clearly had a story in his mind for the 3 film arc and the downside of TROS is that he felt compelled to cram it all into the last act after Rian took the story nowhere in TLJ.

JJ brought so much more fun and emotion to the movies than Rian did. I still cannot get over how much the deaths of Han and Leia resonated in the TFA and TROS compared to Luke (the main OT character!) whose death in TLJ was just...weird and unemotional. RJ had a few interesting takes on SW in TLJ but it was just a horrible 2nd act of a trilogy and now comes across even worse post TROS.

My opinion has not changed. TLJ is still arguably the best movie in the franchise, and definitely the best since ESB.

    ^^^^ This!

The best part of TLJ was Luke's trick. And it killed him- our main hero.

And it had NO impact on the next film. None.

I think a 5-10 year time jump would have made TROS much better for a lot of reasons, but a big one is the idea that "the legend of Luke Skywalker's heroics on Crait have spread through out the Galaxy. Many systems, inspired by the Jedi's sacrifice, have joined the resistance..."

You could even do that without a time jump.

But the time jump would have also allowed some other cool things. Like, seeing how being Supreme Leader has taken its toll on Kylo. Having Kylo and Rey not force connect for years. Have Rey still learning from Leia, but also trying to teach a few force sensitive teens some stuff. Etc.

I enjoyed TROS as a fan of Star Wars. But as a fan of cinema in general, it made me appreciate TLJ even more than I already did and I didn't think that was possible. The Last Jedi is far and away the best film of this sequel trilogy and the best Star Wars entry since Empire.

It makes me respect the film more, though I still think the Poe and Finn plots are a waste of time.
