Your top 5 must-haves for TFA (and the ST in general)

Just as we have a Top 5 no-no's thread of what us as fans don't want to see in TFA (or the ST in general), let's come up with a Top 5 list of things that we feel TFA must have. It can be anything, planets, characters, elements, plot, storylines, etc. Extrapolate to the entire ST if you want.

Also, try not to list obvious things that we know will already be there (ex: the main OT characters, we already know that!)

    My top 5 must-haves:

    1. More that this 3-planet/space craft format (each corresponding with three movie acts) that we see in the OT. It's ok for TFA but for the others, I'd like to see more.
    2. Lando, at some point in the ST
    3. Epic lightsaber fights involving Kylo Ren and Captain Phasma getting into a fight with a blaster and/or a lightsaber
    4. Plausible revelations
    5. A mix of high status and grassroots feel. Let's be honest: the OT heroes basically harkened on a grassroots movement (the Rebellion vs. the Empire). With the Empire been defeated, I want to see downtown like Leia as a top leader of a governmental body. I'd hate to see all that work and effort that was put in the OT be completely dismissed and thrown away by not portraying any of the OT characters in some high position of power (I don't want to have a complete "starting from scratch" feel). That said, I don't want to see a lot of governmental/politics scenes as that could things feel bogged down. There should be a balance of both of these aspects).

Honorable mention: as sad as this may sound, I'd like to see the death of one of the main OT characters (probably Han) and this effect being influential throughout the ST.

Hm… “must-have” is hard to determine (“want” would be much easier). Still, I’ll give it a try.

    My TFA must-have list:
    1. A tight, well-written story, which engages and move me.
    2. A truly awesome (in the original meaning of the word) bad guy, who I can believe in and who scares me (on the heroes’ behalf).
    3. Central mundane characters and conflicts, instead of everything revolving around force users. (I.e. force users and their arcs should inform the plots, but at the core, the story needs to be mundane and believable).
    4. The OT characters used in good and integral ways. Fan service and token throwbacks doesn’t interest me, but if well written, virtually any past character (Boba Fett & Darth Plagueis included) could be made to work, although including such characters need be on the demand of the story.
    5. Comically tragic characters (C3PO) rather than tragically comic characters (Jar-Jar Bings).

All in all, good writers and storytellers can make anything work just wonderfully, and in the end it all depends more on how they do it then what they include in TFA.

True. I meant it more as personal must-haves, based on what one wants to see. I should've worded it better but I think most will get the jist of it.

Um... BTW, how exactly does @Fartkraum's post constitute trolling? I'm totally confuzzled.

First off, whoa, I did know that one can see who specifically rated them, and what it was exactly (I'm still kinda new to this forum but not new to internet forums in general).

Second, I assumed @Fartkraum was trolling because he mentioned things we already know that are going to be in the movie, basic stuff that we know, despite me stating don't just list the obvious (thought he was trolling me). Now if he wasn't purposely trolling, I apologize and I'll think about undoing that rating.

I cannot speak for @Fartkraum, but to me his posts doesn't read sarcastic or anything, but simply as an enthusiastic statement of optimism towards TFA. I could sort of see the post being given an Off-Topic rank, but even that would be VERY harsh, IMHO. Calling his post an act of trolling, I would say itself skirts the definition of what trolling is.

Btw, if you click "Ratings Received" in your status window, you'll see who have given you which ratings.

    - Quality villains (Uber and Ren better be badass and fascinating).
    - At least one lightsaber battle.
    - Luke doing cool Jedi stuff.
    - A sense of mystery in the plot.
    - Some nice "twists" or surprises.

I'm a bit surprised some of these didn't make other people's lists:

    1) Someone must say, "I have a bad feeling about this" once per film.
    2) There must be one Wilhelm scream per film.
    3) The mentor must die in the first film.
    4) Someone must be tempted by the Darkside.
    5) There must be one epic lightsaber battle per film including one in the water and another in the air.

    ;)

    1. Relatable characters. I don't even care if they're new characters or old characters. I just want to care about them. This will also require good performances from the actors, good direction, and good casting choices, so maybe this is 3 items :)

    2. A well-written script with heart, smart dialog, and a compelling story.

    3. Humor that works.

    4. Visuals - something striking and new. Something iconic in the vein of the opening to ANH with the Star Destroyer passing overhead. (we may already have this image from teaser #2 with the crashed Star Destroyer -- I LOVE that image, but I hope there's more :)

    5. A resounding John Williams victory in the ongoing battle of "what should be louder in the final sound mix, music or sound effects?"

Thanks! Interesting feature I must say. By the way, though I can make guesses based on intuition, how can I tell which ratings technically constitute as positive, neutral, and negative?

I think only Optimistic, Clouded, and Disagree are neutral, with everything left of it good and everything right of it bad.

These two +1, Obi Wan, Anakin and many other characters from the prequels gave off this hacky pseudo-Shakespeare vibe with how well spoken and overly logical they were. They didn't have any personality. There was no casual Han Solo-esque characters played by actors with gravitas, and the humour consisted of childish slapstick crap or poorly delivered sarcastic one-liners (Ewan Mcgregor is no saint, he could have done better in some areas)

I hope they bring back that casual Earth-like way of speaking we had before, and don't try to give the Star Wars universe it's own dialect like Lucas tried to.

I need a moment with the original trio. Maybe some humor involved. Just a moment where you just take in everything they may have went through off screen.

Lightsaber duel, but not one that is like the prequels. Has to be more grounded and a lot like fencing and medevial.

Well written story that allows everyone to shine.

    Dogfighting with X-wings and Ties.

    Hrm. A great soundtrack.

I'm on board with most of what has been intimated thus far in this thread.

    1. A main villain on the level of Darth Sidious. Darth Plagueis fits that bill, I'd like for it to be Plagueis, but I don't need it to be him. An enforcer on the level of Darth Vader. We'll find if Kylo Ren is the enforcer that his (possible) grandfather was, I'm betting eventually he'll be that.
    2. Luke to appear as the powerful/wise/etc. Jedi Master I've wanted to see for 32 years. Sounds like that won't be until Episode VIII and hopefully IX.
    3. A mixture of aesthetics from the previous two trilogies while also bringing something new to the visual table.
    4. More than one Jedi. I don't expect a thousand, a hundred, or even a score of Jedi, but a handful should not be beyond the realm of reasonable.
    5. A wider view of the Star Wars galaxy as eloquently provided by the latest episodes of the saga.

    1. At least one jump to lightspeed viewed from inside a ship's cockpit with the iconic star lines (how on earth this never made it into the PT I'll never understand).

    2. Luke showing up when all hope seems lost and saving the day, Miyagi style.

    3. A lightsaber duel with banter that develops the characters, like in TESB and ROTJ.

    4. Fresh, jaw-dropping imagery, like the battle of Hoth was when it first came out (I agree that teaser #2's opening was already an example of this)

    5. New characters that are so strong and resonate so well that they make me willing, and dare I say maybe even excited, to let go of the classic characters when the time is right.

This was a deliberate design choice the George made with the PT. his point was that the hyperspace effect was a major wow-effect in the OT, and he did not wish to degrade the ANH experience for new fans who watch the movies in order by "spoiling" it in the PT. (Did this make sense?)

Interesting... I didn't know about that.

Don't worry, your explanation made perfect sense :), though I think I disagree with George's logic in this case. But either way I guess this bodes well for TFA having it.
