Pablo Hidalgo said that he never said abandoned Rey was 5 years old. Which is neither a confirmation nor a denial.

In his book (TFA Visual Dictionary), he said Rey was 10 years old when she made that fight suit doll.

Daisy has said that she's been aware of Rey's true backstory since, when they were filming TFA. So she could be telling the truth (perhaps a little slip of the tongue) and Pablo is trying to cover the tracks, or Daisy is engaging in some misdirection or her own.

Okay so I saw TFA for the third time yesterday and was thinking about who Rey could possibly be. We have all heard that she may be Han and Leia's daughter, or Luke's daughter, or perhaps even related to obi wan somehow. Those all feel too easy to me, not saying one of them couldn't be the answer though. I was trying to think of something that would be a shock yet keep her tied with the skywalker line. So here's what I came up with.

What if Anakin had another child, not with Padmé. Sometime before that he was unaware of. And that child went on to have Rey. I know people would say how could he not know he had another child out there, but he also did not know about Luke or Leia until they came into his life, Leia was even standing in front of him on the Tantive IV and aboard the Death Star and Vader seemed to barely flinch. This would also give a whole new meaning to Yoda's line in ESB saying,"No, there is another" maybe he wasn't referencing Leia...

This would be the reason of confusion in Luke's eyes. He would be sensing anakin before he turns around and sees Rey, sensing his own blood, but confused as to who she is. She is a skywalker but not from Luke or Leia.

I know this is crazy and I'm sure there are many holes but it's the best I could come up with! Let me know what you all think!

May the force be with you

Original, but simply too many moving pieces. I don't think the next movie needs to be a twist. In fact, if you watch Star Wars in order Vader's revelation about Luke isn't really surprising. I expect Rey to be either a daughter of Solo/Luke because that's where the story is going. Yeah, it's simple, but simple doesn't have to be bad.

    Kylo Ren: "It is you."

Kylo Ren is recognising Darth Vader within Rey's cells? (Clone theory) ;)

Honestly, the Luke theories are getting increasingly frustrating.

The parallels between their childhoods are extremely fragile. Luke had loving uncles. Rey is completely on her own, fighting for survival. The one thing they have in common is sand, really.

    if anyone...
    • became an orphan at a young age
    • became a scavenger to survive
    • was watched over/used by manipulative authority figure
    • learned how to be a great mechanic and pilot
    • ran away
    • got mixed up in a war.
    • ended up with the falcon.
    ... that was Han Solo.

Don't even get me started on the gross sugestion at #5 that a "true" Skywalker should be Luke's kid, not Leia's.

Let's just talk about an extremely relevant omission in this King Arthur analogy: who tries to remove the sword from the stone before Arthur and fails? His brother, Sir Kay, a knight (Knights of Ren, eh?)

We can see anything in this line:

    1. She is "the awakening" he'd sensed before.
    2. She is the daughter of Luke that he has hidden long time ago.
    3. She is the daughter of Luke who escape with her mother at the time of the academy's destruction
    4. She is the sister he had hidden long time ago.
    5. She is the daughter of the "clan leader" that he murdered
    6. She is Darth Vader's clone (I like this one:D).
    7. She is Palpatine daughter/granddaughter
    8. She Darth Plagueis granddaughter
    9. She is ... (put your own theory here)

As you can see, this (and other lines in TFA) can be interpreted accordingly with any theory. They had made an excellent job leaving it so dubious. I believe that in the end this won't be the twist everybody is expecting in Episode VIII. A good twist is the one nobody is expecting (like in TESB).

I don't think the theories are frustrating. They are expression of imagination (as any other theory). Some are well build up, some are funny, some are awkward, some are preposterous. But all of them are expression of our love to Star Wars. Lets defend our own theories, but not detract without a proper argumentation.

You can also argue the comparison as follows:

    a. Rey and Luke are both in a state of dependency. Luke as a farmer is dependent on his aunt and uncle. He needs to work for them and frustrate his access to a larger world. Rey is dependent on Unkar Plutt for food rations (dependency frustrates Rey's independence and access to a larger world).
    b. Both Luke and Rey meet a surrogate father at the beginning of their adventures: Rey has Han, Luke has Ben.
    c. Rey learned how to be a great mechanic while scavenging the wastes of Jakku. She has build both a ship and a speederbike (like Anakin build his podracer) Luke learned his mechanical skills on the farm and while working on his T16 and speeder.
    d. Rey is a great pilot: she has flown and studied ships before but never took them off world. The 'before the awakening' book even suggest she has a sort of flight simulator game. She also pilots her speeder bike. Luke is also established as a great and natural pilot: he drives a speeder, he can blow up womprats with his T16.
    e. Both gain ownership of Anakin's lightsaber. Obi Wan hands the lightsaber to Luke. The lightsaber summons Rey.
    f. Luke is deperate to get off world. Rey is desperate to stay where she is: she is waiting for her family (an inversion of Luke in ANH).
    g. Both are orphans
    h. Both have secret special powers (the force) which betrays their true destiny as well as their 'regal' and special backgrounds/parents.
    All Skywalker tropes

As for the Arthur analogy. The "Kay" archetype is definitely Finn. Rey (spanish for King, coincedence?) is summoned by the sword/ sabre and takes it from the old box (i.e. excalibur from the stone). She runs away from her destiny (the saber/sword) and the saber ends up with Finn (Kay). Finn proves that he is not the true inheritor of the sword on two occasions (TR-8R and his confrontation with Kylo Ren - it is not his saber, just like Kay couldn't prove he could pull the sword from the stone before the assembled audience). Like Arthur, Rey gets a second chance to prove that the saber belongs to her. Again she pulls 'the sword from the stone' by pulling the saber towards her in the duel with Kylo Ren, just like Arthur pulled the sword from the stone a second time as proof before the assembled audience.

Kay is Finn? Boorish, lazy, spoiled, arrogant, rude, bully, bossy, vain, uncaring Kay is Finn?
I don't see it, to be honest.

    Not to mention:

The way I see it, it goes like this:

    Rey = King Arthur

    Luke = Merlin

    Kylo Ren = Sir Kay

Maz = The Lady of the Lake (Nimue).

But now I have to interfere as the medievalist. Kay is almost never portrayed as you describe him in medieval French or English literature. Kay as 'Boorish, lazy, spoiled, arrogant, rude, bully, bossy, vain, uncaring' are mostly 19th and 20th century additions to the Arthurian corpus. And only occur in marginal amount of works. Kay does claim the sword is his, his one moment of vanity and arrogance in arthurian literature, but for the rest he is always described as Arthur's brother and most loyal (lat. fides) companion. Finn does defintely not have the characteristics you just mentioned, but he does have the characteristics of the earliest references to Kay. But in any case, it is clear that Arndt/Kasdan/Abrams were inspired for a great deal by the themes usually associated with the first act of any piece of Arthurian literature. Finn just happens to take on the 'Kay' archetype, but only in the interest of portraying Rey as a female 'Arthur' . Very well done by the writers of TFA.

As for your gifs. Awesome! Luke does look very much like Merlin on that island. It was Merlin's magic which made the sword end up in the stone. Merlin was Arthur's teacher/tutor. He is technically handing down excalibur...in one way or the other. I can't wait how this continues in VIII.

As for your comparison: very good! I would only say Kylo Ren is Mordred and that Finn is Kay. Your comparison of Maz with Nimue is spot on.

Luke is definitely the Merlin in this scenario which is another reason why it'd be very curious if he's the heroine's father because the Merlin figure, afaik, doesn't have children. He's always the guide/tutor figure, not more than that.
Added to that, the whole look of Luke very much echoes characters like Merlin, Gandalf, Dumbledore and Obi-Wan, for sure, which does a pretty thorough job of desexualizing him, imo.

TFA Luke has some notable comparisons to the Fisher King as well, another Arthurian figure who happens to be infertile. >.>

Great posts! A shame I have to post another dozen or so before I can "like" them.

I'm on the Luke's-her-father camp, by the way, but I do think that people tend to reach a little too far in trying to prove their particular preference is the most viable one, and that it happened in that particular article.

I was convinced she's Luke's daughter because of the narrative, the lightsaber, the island dream, what Maz Kanata says and the look they exchange at the end. We tend to look at evidence through the lens of our preferences, though.

You probably read the paragraph in question as implying that a daughter of Leia could not be the true heir of Skywalker, while I read it as missing a "Luke."

In many versions of Arthurian legend, the young orphan Arthur acquires his sword Excalibur by pulling it out of a stone, an act that can only be done by the true heir to King Uther Pendragon. The most exciting moment of The Force Awakens visually references this – the lightsaber is tossed out of Finn’s hands into a snowbank, making it appear very much like the Sword in the Stone. Kylo and Rey both reach out for it with the Force, but Rey is the one it goes to, suggesting that she is the true heir of Skywalker.

If it only said suggesting that she is the true heir of Luke Skywalker, then my bias and I would agree. ;)

In other words, I look at the scene as showing Rey being the rightful owner of the lightsaber (as opposed to Kylo) not because an offspring of Leia could not be considered Anakin's heir, but because that particular lightsaber's previous owner was Luke, not Leia, and it passed directly from the parent to the child.

When Luke's nephew - who, as Anakin's grandson, could indeed be considered an heir in his own right - fails to pull it out of the snow, and someone else whose origin is unknown manages to pull it out, we (and by we I mean some of us) immediately think "she must be closer to Luke than his nephew", and that would make her his daughter. This interpretation fits with the lightsaber passing down from parent to child.

Put it this way: why would they bother resurrecting Anakin's lightsaber, who's only role in the saga up to this point has been to provide a link between Luke and his father, than to a) provide a link between Luke and his child? ... is my thinking. But an alternate way of thinking is that b) it was chosen instead of Luke's green lightsaber precisely because it could link her to Anakin, weakening the link to Luke. Yet another way of looking at it is that c) it was chosen so it would link the three main characters of the saga regardless of their blood relationship.

Here is where we each go with our own gut! ( Mine says a) )
