If it does as well as a middling Marvel film I don't see the problem. Of course click bait headlines will call it a flop. However, all things considered that is hardly a flop. It does mean they need to start getting things right more consistently, but lets see how it does when its done. Still a long way to go.

Deadline (claims) movie (theatrical and home) net profit estimates
TFA: $780.11M profit out of $$2.07B worldwide box office
RO: $318.80M profit out of $1.06B worldwide box office
TLJ: $417.50M (TFA -46.48%, RO +30.96%) profit out of $1.33B worldwide box office

If Solo makes $500M-$600M for example thats ~$400M-$500M less overall than Rogue One and ~$700M-800M less than TLJ.

if this movie breaks even or has a middling profit, it will be a huge success for Lucasfilm after all the additional encumbrances (recasting, reshooting, etc.), and the negative fan vibes and bad press.

can anyone think of any other movies that were almost surefire dead in the water, but managed to swim and not sink? (genuinely asking)
i can think of some golden age of film movies that suffered terrible budget overages and director replacements and recasts that made it in spite of all that, but nothing very recent.

I suspect positive reactions from the audience (surprisingly good among fans after all the negativity) will give it longer legs.

Is there a big backlash? From the reactions you've seen?

No - that is what is surprising. Until a few days ago, YT comments in particular were full of hate and venom. The reactions are predominantly positive, which shocked me.

Breaking even is not a "huge success". That's 2 say it's not a failure. It's called staying in business.

you misunderstand me. in light of all the problems, not losing money will be a very happy outcome for Lucasfilm.

I'm not raining on anyone's parade. I'm not saying it was bad or terrible. Yes I'm aware of the problem with production but this film should of made an easy 850 million regardless of who sits in the directors chair. Hollywood is only happy if they make a big profit.

There are still channels like "Geeks+Gamers", that are pretty much built of SW hatred at this point. Elsewhere, the reactions are mostly "ok" to "good".

I ignore those and I can see the near future in which they become isolated, judging by the current reactions - and let's face it, these are reactions from the fans, we are going to the theater from Wednesday-Friday.

That's just to show you that China doesn't like SW but the rest of the world does. If you look up the top 50 grossing movies of all time in China, not a single SW movie is listed.

The mixed critical reviews would depress the opening weekend, but if fans really like it there film will have legs. So far it seems like this film is less divisive than the TLJ among fans.

I agree. While this probably isn't going to be the breakout hit that Lucasfilm was hoping for, if they can successfully course-correct with their smaller films (IE: keep the budgets on the spin-offs manageable and don't have a ton of trouble with your directors) then Solo being a relative disappointment will be water under the bridge.

That they were able to salvage this production and deliver a largely-satisfying movie itself shows that they're committed to protecting the image of the IP. Sure, it caused them to double the budget, but I feel like this movie could be helpful in resolving the fractures of this fanbase after TLJ. They already made billions of dollars in profit off of the other movies, so they can take an underperformer.

that can be fixed with a old republic saga, a wraith squadron film set 100 years after the actual movies(for originality and creative freedom), a space pirate film, and maybe rian johnsons trilogy. All of these can be huge hits if done right...especially in asia

I think the box office numbers are likely going to be down for this being a SW movie. My theater was empty. That being said I went to a 3:20 showing so I was not expecting a large showing. Schools other than my kids school are still in session and most people would still be at work.
