The movie had too much stacked against it to succeed. It's a perfect storm of problems and bad decisions.

I think they will market this movie different.

I expect them to drop the line "from the director of The Force Awakens" at least once every trailer + tv spot.

Damn it JJ you always has the toughest jobs.

Yikes, barely crossing $100 mil on a holiday weekend is pretty bad. It's a shame because I feel the movie deserves more success.

IMO it's a combination of poor marketing and poor timing. The thing is Disney is looking at the bigger picture. They wanted Mary Poppins to be their December release, and putting out Solo early gives lots of room to start hyping up Episode 9. People might already forget but we got the first teaser for Force Awakens in 2014, that film had 13 or 14 months of marketing hype leading in, the other films have had about 8 or 9 months, Solo had 4. But this will allow Episode 9 to now have a nice 14-month marketing build up once Solo is out on video, and they better milk that to make up for this.

The release date timing was already locked in, and I think they were expecting the goodwill of TLJ to overdrive it. But if anything the reverse happened, due to division on that film by fans and fan fatigue. It's a lesson in bad marketing, in my opinion. The marketing didn't sell the film (or in my opinion, reflect how good it is), and they didn't push it hard enough. Infinity War swallowed up so much of late April and early May that I think it took away that "last minute push" that these films typical get in their final stages. But they knew they were releasing Infinity War, so I don't know what they were thinking. The marketing for this really hasn't done a good job. It feels like they are still learning how to deal with the timing of these, as this is the first one to be out less than 6 months after a previous one. I am guessing all the production trouble left them unable to market this in any way in 2017, I wonder if they had planned on originally putting out some kind of teaser in like September of last year originally.

Not crazy at all if you've been following latest trends online for the past 5 months, which I have done.

What makes my eyes roll however, is this part of the article:

"That was frustrating both to those who really liked Last Jedi and to those who didn’t like it for subjectively valid reasons entirely unrelated to the gender parity and racial makeup of its cast."

Is he kidding? Is he trolling? I have never seen a single review on YouTube criticising the gender parity and racial makeup of these latest Star Wars films. NEVER! ALL OF THE CRITICISM IS RELATED TO SUBJECTIVELY VALID REASONS!

It's damn frustrating that people in the media still to do this day treats most of the complainers as racists and anti-feminists when that's NOT WHAT WE'RE COMPLAINING ABOUT!

Oh man... I need a drink. This circus will just keep on going, as long as people completely disconnected from reality are in charge.

You must not have been looking into Youtube very far, and I don't mean that as an insult. Don't go down the rabbit hole.

To be fair, most of the major channels that are done more professionally and have a good budget and sponsored backing usually don't focus on this. But it definitely has been a big part, especially of more amateur channels.

Get a group of characters established and then do a crossover movie or even trilogy like the Avengers, then follow up adventures to the still alive characters and add more characters to the movies.
    So maybe something like this.
During the Old Republic we get movies about the Jedi, Republic Army, the Mandalorians, Smugglers, Sith, droids, a wide variety of subjects that A list directors want to tackle.
The Avengers type movie could be the mandos attacking the Jedi and Republic, while the Sith prepare their own Conquest for the next main Crossover(a revan esque main character falls to the dark side for the greater good in this one).
The next couple movies after the first crossover event would deal with the fall out of the first war. while the movies after the sith crossover will deal with the various consequences of the sith attack invasion.

Then for the final crossover build-up, it is revealed that the prime jedi is responsible for everything and is trying to take control of the cosmic force. the jedi, sith, republic commandos, mercenaries, mandos, droids, and the revan-esque main character have to work together to stop him in the final crossover.

this will give us a huge boost in franchise esteem

build a strong foundation of great characters in the old republic era that has no baggage or continuity constraints

and PLEASE STOP WITH THE HUMAN MAIN CHARACTER BEING SHOVED DOW OUR THROATS....GVE US ALIENS, DROIDS, CYBORGS...ANYTHING BUT A PLAIN HUMAN

Sad that he's getting punish for "sins" of JJ and Rian Johnson dispite saving a movie that actually turned out to be good and was written off before it even started.

JJ and RJ's film were better received by critics and received higher audience scores. Apparently their sins were making movies that most people like?

I think you missed my point. I never said that what they did was wrong. I had "sin" in quotation marks referring to the people who disliked TLJ.

In other words, people are punishing Solo for not not agreeing what they saw in TLJ even though Solo has nothing to do with that film and Ron Howard is getting punished because of it even though he had nothing to do with TLJ. They essentially boycotting Guardians of the Galaxy 2 because they didn't agree with Age of Ultron.

I predicted it pays itself reaching 700. Guess what. It will be brutal. 500 worldwide if lucky. Wow......I'm speechless. 3,5 years and 4 movies. She did it.

Again, people who liked TLJ aren't going to see Solo because the film has had negative press for almost a year. The reviews aren't great. Most of the people who have been moaning about TLJ in this forum went to see Solo. This is how most films work. There aren't many films that get huge openings to mixed reviews.

Memorial Day Weekend seems to have gone from being "the real start of the Summer movie season" to "eh" with audiences.

If that's the case, then I imagine that they'll be more cautious about when they place movies if they do more than two a year (and I suspect that that time will come sooner rather than later).

You actually think that negative press has any effect at all? Really? Most General Audiences don't even know the behind-the-scenes stuff, or care. That inside baseball stuff by and large plays to the hardcores, and even there it doesn't really effect them. They'll see it no matter what, because they're hardcores and have an emotional bias for the product.

The only thing that truly has the traction to really put a dent in the numbers for Star Wars, is a bad last movie that alienated the fans last time out.

They don't care about those, either. Most of the time, up until TLJ, people *avoided* reviews so as not to take the chance of being spoiled. If you're claiming that suddenly they're reading them to make sure its a good movie, that's the definition of brand damage. Such tomfoolery didn't exist prior to Dec 2017. If it was SW and in the theater this decade, they were sold.

People went to a Star Wars release OW no matter what, and the less they knew, the better.

Now you're just being hopeful with rose-colored glasses on. Frankly, and I can only speak for myself here, no... I did not. In fact, I may have shifted to not going to see it in the theaters at all. But that's me. Went to my sisters and they had watched DP2. We talked about Solo not doing well and she specifically spot-checked TLJ as the reason they weren't bothering with it. The kids certainly didn't care about going to see it, but the teenagers were all over DP2, so they went.

Reviews don't mean blast. Never have, never will. Its just someone's opinion and usually professional critics by definition, don't like popular, or audience-pleasing, films. They're trying to impress their art-house buddies slagging off on that type of stuff, while propping up something you never heard of. Its how they have always tended to roll for as long as I can remember back into the 70's and 80's.

I never once did or didn't go to a movie, because Siskel or Ebert liked, or didn't like, the damn thing. And I watched them quite a bit.

BTW... Lets Clear Up Some Lies Fanbois and articles(not you) are telling about Solo.

    * Maybe they shouldn't have released two SW movies so close together. THAT WAS IT.

Really? I know they must have waited at least a year after Black Panther to release Infinity War.. right? Oh right.. BP came out AFTER TLJ, still hasn't fully finished its run, and we'll get Ant-Man and the Wasp in ~2 months from now *rolls eyes*. Marvel be like going 3 films a year and people are claiming Star Wars falls apart if we get more than 1.

    * The competition from DP2 and IW was intense.

Nope. Infinity War has been dropping off and was largely out of the way, and DP2 also had a big drop. It was ripe for the pickings. And after that, Solo has clear seas until Jurassic World in late June. Yet they're still sinking. AND Justice League? They're wondering if it'll even make JUSTICE LEAGUE money? And that movie likely cost less than Solo(officially from BoxOfficeMojo they say the budget for Solo was $300 mil), due to bad management.

Really... this should be a surprise to nobody except the hardcores that have had their head in the sand since TLJ release trying to convince themselves Everything Is Awesome.

Either way... Do You Believe Me Now?

Ball don't lie and we now have solid proof in actual numbers of the wreckage that Rainy caused on the IP with his Billion Dollar Boondoggle snapping half of the money Rogue One's 3-day weekend made and calling it SOLO's number. And boom... half the audience disappeared.

    Questions to ponder:

    * Does Solo even make half TLJ's total take?
    * Does 9 even make a billion dollars at the box office?

Avengers was Disney's biggest prize to kick off the Summer and they moved it back. It seems that late April window is becoming the prize spot. I'm sure Disney wasn't thrilled about Deadpool being released in May. Avengers/Deadpool are projecting to do $60M in business for the 3 day weekend. That's a pretty good business with Solo doing $83M.

Don't feed the trolls and also, of course reviews matter. To suggest that reviews don't matter is an illogical position. If a person doesn't think critic reviews influence box office then they should take it up with Box Office Pro/Deadline. If you disagree with industry experts there's nothing I can say to change your mind.

Let me just add something: her first producing credit was for E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial. You know, Spielberg's biggest hit for an entire decade before he came around with Jurassic Park (which also became his biggest hit, and it's sticking there after being re-released in 3-D).
I disagree with you listing AAOU as "a movie Americans didn't enjoy" even though it dropped 30%-40% from its predecessor. Also, Transformers: The Last Knight was considered a flop over there, and it's the only movie in the series that Chinese audiences actually seem to have hated.

China's reasons for disinterest in Star Wars are predominantly because they were never exposed to it thanks to the government's censorship of a lot of Western media, and apparently they're not all that thrilled with sci-fi movies that aren't neon-soaked CGI-fests, nor are they impressed with the fight scenes, which are less complex than a lot of their Wuxia genre movies. Using China as a barometer for success for Star Wars makes no sense in this regard, although it would certainly help if they came around to it, and it's hardly Kathleen Kennedy's fault when there are plenty of other issues I listed.
I think that from a business standpoint, Fox moving Deadpool 2 to the middle of May, between Avengers in one corner and a Star Wars spin-off in the other, was a terrible idea. The movie would have legged out a lot more if it had been an August release and would have benefited from the premium format screens that no other movies would be using. They don't have any more releases this year until that month. In the end, it just limited DP2's opening and subsequent legs for hopes for some Memorial Day Weekend money.

I was referring to how people really didn't like Age of Ultron in the Marvel threads and making an extreme point about what movies do well in China that didn't receive well in the States . The 3 movies that I listed are actually in the top 50 grossing movies in China. Not a single SW movie is in the top 50. I personally wasn't bother by Age of Ultron and in retrospect, it ties in very nicely with Black Panther. I agree with your statements and thats why I feel like China isn't a reliable place to judge a performance of a SW movie. Especially when someone paste an article to show how TLJ or Solo flopped in china to prove a point it's doing badly in the States, I can't take it seriously and find it to be a weak argument (obviously its too early to get a solid numbers for Solo).
