People wanted to see the cgi and 3D. Screw the plot, characters, dialogue, acting, etc.. because none was there.

Its all about spectacle. Avatar, Avengers, Jurassic World, Star Wars, Gone with the Wind. No matter what the box office champ has been. Any blockbuster that breaks records does so because of people enjoying the spectacle. Quality of the film is irrelevant. If TFA breaks records, it will be because general audiences enjoy the ride and the scenery. Just as they did with Avatar.

And I don't think there's anything wrong with that. Sometimes you can just enjoy something for the hollow spectacle. Avatar was fun, full immersion, cinematic spectacle porn. Its hollow, but it was fun. And that's why audiences kept flocking to it for weeks after release.

Artistic quality will inform longevity. How far into the future will we watch it after the wow factor as worn off. But has little impact on box office revenue as general audiences don't care if its good as long as its fun.

It will be front loaded but most of all time is just unrealistic. That assumes general audiences aren't enjoying it and it will experience massive drop off due to lack of interest.

But quite the opposite. It seems the only people disappointed by themovie are a certain subset of fans. And they saw the movie regardless... As you have proven.

The cinemascore of A (A+ from women) indicates strong legs through the holidays even if the opening weekend is front loaded due to holiday shopping/travel.

Not to mention that there's nothing else coming out this year that's going to come close to remotely making TFA's kind of money... and that will continue be the case for January and February. The advantage of having a blockbuster come out in December is that it will have extremely little competition for months on end.

I tried using Jurassic World's multiplier to estimate what TFA will make at most this weekend. The answer is that it can make as much as $307 million if attendance is strong enough. Really good WOM and good reviews are extremely helpful to that end.

OK, you guys already posted some numbers, i have one more thing, read it yesterday. Not only was TFA the biggest opening day in Germany ever considering just the money it made. Those numbers leads to 560 000 real people watching it on opening day. Quite impressive regardless what one would think about the movie itself.

Opening weekend will be heavily frontloaded (although now looking like -45% or so, is not too bad for this type of movie really), purely for the fact that so much of it was people like us rushing to see it as soon as possible. Movies with strong fan contingents will always have strong Friday numbers and a steep drop off. The real test will be in the holiday weekends. If the dropoff isn't to steep, we could legitimately see numbers above 500-550m by the end of New Years weekend. If it gets there by that time, I'd say #2 spot domestic is a lock. Avatar is gonna be tough to catch though.

Saturday numbers will likely be released in a few hours. The trades generally update in the morning West Coast time.

Interesting thing is that it doesn't even open until Jan in China. So these numbers really are even more amazing than they appear.

A note on that. BO Mojo is using Disney's estimate for the weekend. Some are still saying that those are conservative and it may come in a bit higher than that. I don't think it will be significant. Might just crawl up closer to 250.

I figured it would be largely front-loaded, but I was just saying that if we were going with extremely optimistic expectations, then we would be dealing with a movie that could make as much as $310 million OW.
