This was a tough poll because I love all 3 so much. Had the DVDs - now I watch the extended BRDs quite often. I read the books and can't help but to think that Tolkien himself would have been pleased with the end product if he had been around to see them, Those films were complete masterpieces by Jackson.

The Hobbit on the other hand? ..... I REALLY LIKE The Hobbit trilogy, but I don't love it. They did not have that "magic" they had when making the LOTR films. The Hobbit/Smaug is fantastic. It is right up there with the LOTR films IMO. But the other 2 films - way to much unneeded fluff added.

I know this is super late, but don't be ashamed!

I envy that you got to see these films for the first time so recently!

For weeks I pondered on which one to vote for. I watched the 3 films at least twice. Thought which ONE would I show a friend to introduce them to the saga; different strategies for choosing. This has been the HARDEST voting-decision-thing in recent memory. And no, I still can't decide which is the favorite. They're all good but for each and it's own reasons.

I grew up with the LOTR trilogy. Great movies and they're one of the first movies I remember watching. Frodo is my favorite character.

One question: Why didn't the ring just roll to Sauron?
It's somewhat sentient, and has rolled away from someone before. Why not go all the way to Mordor? Yes, I know its movements were very subtle, somewhat magical and aided by gravity, but still, eventually it would have reached Mordor. And if that seemed like too much work, there was an easier way. Sauron saw the ring when someone put it on, so it could slip on someone's finger (by tempting them) then slip off and fall into a place where it couldn't be reached by the previous wearer. From that point on, all it had to do was wait for the Nazgul to retrieve it.

Edit: I assume that the ring "knows" Sauron's location just as Sauron knows its location. When someone puts on the ring they allow a connection between it and Sauron. And the ring, being sentient, is aware of it and uses it too.

I enjoy the novels and the original three films. The extended versions of the films are too long for me to enjoy and serve as a reminder that editors are a good thing.

my favorite Tolkien book related to LotR is definitely, hands down, the Silmarillion. i've read that more times than i can remember (certainly over a dozen).

the LotR trilogy is a beautiful, epic tragedy and i love it. it's especially good if you've read Silmarillion as it really adds to the poignancy of Frodo and Sam's story.

i've never been a huge fan of the films, especially not the abysmal Hobbit trilogy.

if i had to pick one segment of LotR to claim as favorite, i'd say RotK, if only because of the wealth of appendices at the end of the book :p

Silmarillion also turns Noldors into absolute jerks. After reading Lord of the Rings I was depressed that Elves had to leave Middle-Earth. After Sillmarillion, however, I was surprised that the Valar even allowed them to come back. :D

it was really just Feanor and his jerk sons that gave the Noldor such a bad rep. the house of Fingolfin were good folks, they just got caught up in a crappy situation and were too proud to repent.

Ok. I like Middle-Earth. Im not a huge fan of it as i am SW. I just don't get all the hate 4 the Hobbit films. Is it because it was cut into 3?

i thought the first one was fine, but i stopped at the second.

a romance between a dwarf and an elf is so utterly outside the realm of possibilities in that universe. i never bothered with the third one.

Same. As a kid, I was really into LOTR, and I still hold it near and dear, for sure. I'm more of a GOT fan now, but nothing trumps Star Wars for me.
