    From what I know, these cute little buggers are force sensative & help the female nuns guard the Jedi artifacts on the islands.
    If provoked or if they feel the need, they can turn into nasty, fang bearing critters.

    Disney & ILM made Porgs to hawk merch & toys for the under 10 crowd.
    They'll be the Ewoks of the Sequel Trilogy. :)

    I don’t think they help the nuns... from a previous article from the SWNN it is suggested that the nuns eat the Porgs

    ( the name of the article is New Details on Fathiers, the Caretakers, and Porgs from Star Wars: The Last Jedi )

    Did we see a "caretaker" on The Force Awakens? When Finn is ready to leave Maz's castle to work in the Outer Rim, wasn't one of the two (not the red one) the same species as the Caretakers? Just something I noticed.....
