But why does it matter that Cumberbatch doesn't look like Ricardo. It's a reboot.

But he's still supposed to be the same character, and he doesn't look Indian! Khan shouldn't be played by a white guy!

It's no different than how in the Battlestar Galactica SyFy reboot they changed races and gender of Boomer, Tigh and Starbuck for example.

It's not supposed to be a complete reboot. It's just supposed to be an alternate timeline with younger versions of the exact same characters, so I don't think your analogy with Battlestar Galactica holds. Second of all, the character has a very Indian name and has been explicitly identified as being Indian. Given those facts, why should a white guy be playing him? It would be like having Brad Pitt play Mr. Miyagi or something. Plus, the idea of changing an ethnic character into a generic white guy just reeks of covert racism. Cumberbatch's being cast in an Indian role reminds me of those old movies that use white actors with their eyes taped back to portray Chinese people (e.g., The Good Earth).

And don't forget that this is Star Trek we're talking about here, a franchise significantly defined by its long and storied history of celebrating ethnic diversity. Getting to see people of all different colors together on screen has always been a big part of what Star Trek is all about, and "whitewashing" Khan goes completely against that ethos, completely against what Gene Roddenberry intended his universe to represent.

A tie-in comic revealed that he underwent facial surgery to conceal his identity. So he's still Indian.

The reason they did that was because they thought that having an Indian actor would bring up unfortunate memories of (relatively) recent terrorist actions, even if said perpetrators were from the Middle-East.

Which Darth Yoda noted, but he said that the character was Indian. While that actor was Mexican, he could pass for being of Indian descent.

I always assumed Kahn was Mexican because Montalbán was Mexican.

I think this is just the story they told publicly. They chose Benedict Cumberbatch because he's the latest craze. People go to see movies just becaues he's in it. He is a good actor but he is being over used in films.

It's in the comic, and by that means, it's canon.

No, but they showed in the comic that he was an Indian dude that underwent surgery.

But everybody knows they only came up with that explanation after the fact as a cheap cop-out to explain away why they made the patently nonsensical decision of casting a white actor in an unambiguously Indian part.

Khan is Indian of familly Sikh in Star trek canon.

''Khan lived up to the axiom coined by one of his creators, "superior ability breeds superior ambition". By 1993, a wave of the genetic "supermen", including Khan, had simultaneously assumed control of more than forty of Earth's nations. From 1992 to 1996 Khan was absolute ruler of more than one-quarter of Earth's population, including the regions of Asia and the Middle East. Considered "the best of tyrants", he severely curtailed the freedoms of his subjects, but his reign was an exception to similar circumstances in Earth history – lacking internal massacres or wars of aggression.''

White Khan is one of the worst things JJ Abrams has done in his Star trek.
