To be fair, I wasn't trying to be analogous to the OP's 'plight'. Just trying to maybe give an idea as to how silly it sounds.

Hold on, I don't think it's that hard to understand. So there's some toys, they look cool, and they're Star wars, but hold on, this is a strange looking alien, is he good, is he bad? You really need a bit of context before buying it, maybe so you could say "Ohh, I recognise that awesome slimy slug toy! He's the one that fries that stormtrooper with his blaster in the trailer! One slimy slug, please!"

I had the opposite experience. With myself and with everyone I showed, the BTS got an immediate... "Ooh, can we watch that again" even among casual fans. With the teaser, I watched it a bunch of times, but with most others it was a one and done.

As for D23, I don't remember who or when it was hyped. But I think many lost sight of the fact that D23, was conceived as in is still at its core a convention for Disney theme parks and animation. And on that front, from a SW perspective the delivered. I think many started to think it would be comic-con or Celebration and that there would be a huge TFA emphasis, but I don't remember Disney or Lucasfilm every portraying it that way. But I could be wrong.

Talk to D23 core membership and you will hear that D23 was a massive success for the parks announcements, the pixar and Disney animation panels, the Civil War reel. Star Wars is just a small part of that entire slate. A portion of their live action panel. I think fans wanted that to be an opportunity to get a trailer, started to believe it, and then were subsequently disappointed when what they had optimistically hoped for didn't happen.

I don't' blame anyone for being disappointed in not getting a trailer at this point. Of course we want one. But I don't think that Lucasfilm has ever been anything but upfront with the fact that this would be a patient marketing campaign. Even going back to the release of teaser 1. That wasn't supposed to happen, but they caved to fan demand for some footage. We've always known this would be the approach. We can dislike it, but I don't think they have never been disingenuous about their intent.

This i think. Would the Star Wars toys have sold as well through the years if there wasn't a visual, cinematic element to them?

Also has the latest soul-crushing no trailer moment happened yet? Can't remember when it was predicted for today and I don't want to mistime my disappointment. :)

48 minutes away. 48 minutes until the sighs of disappointment ring through the air like a million deflated balloons. :)

I may buy some things like the First Order Storm Troopers due to the fact that they will look great next to my OT Storm Troopers, however I never really intended to spend much on the merchandise for The Force Awakens until after I saw the film anyway. I honestly have no reason to doubt that I'll enjoy The Force Awakens quite a bit, but there is still that small possibility that I won't like it, or at the very least may not care for some of the characters in the film, so I'd rather play it safe on that front.

One area that I definitely will be spending money however, is the various books that make up the Journey to The Force Awakens material. Regardless of what I end up thinking of the film in the long run, I am very interested to see how events following RotJ turn out in the new canon.

Yeah, people might of just started buying Jar Jar toys cause he looked like a tuff warrior, that's why you need the cinematic context.

The trailer apparently at 10:01 am PST, or something like that.

I would say Kylo, BB-8, Phasma, and the various ships would be safe toy bets. Even if the film ends up horrible beyond belief, I think those would still remain cool.

Yeah, that's probably a safer bet based on their appearance alone.

The reason there is no trailer, and they expect or hope you'll buy toys you know nothing about is obvious. The movie stinks and they are in panic mode trying to squeeze as much dough as possible out of the hype before people figure out why they are being so secretive about a huge let down. Terrible.

You're mad because there isn't a full trailer.

That's okay. It's all going to be okay. Don't let your anger cloud your judgement.

    Have a seat.

To be honest, if there's any reason to boycott Force Friday, it's because most of the figures look terrible. Have you guys seen the 5POA figures? Many Star Wars collectors, myself included, are very disappointed with the quality of merchandise being offered on FF. Some have said it's the worst line of figures they've seen in 15+ years of collecting. I haven't been collecting long enough to know if that's true or not, but I'm just saying that's how a lot of people feel.

i look at the toys I've kept compared to the many Star Wars vehicles, sets and figures I've bought and sold over the years. I have kept the ones I have because of some connection to those characters, not just because they look cool or have nice styling. I really dig Rey's speeder, but I'm not going to buy a toy of it until I see the movie. BB-8 is cool looking but what if he is just a little round bundle of digital JarJar?
Boycott probably was the wrong word, but I totally get it. I went from super amped about Force Friday to meh in no time flat. Now, if I'm honest, I am a bit concerned about how they are marketing things.
Lucasfilm doesn't owe me anything, but were I a betting man in Vegas... I think they originally planned to have a trailer BEFORE Force Friday, because getting these toys made isn't something that just happens overnight, now they don't, and it feels a little off that they are expecting us to be so excited for an event representing something we still know so little about. and if you don't think Disney/Lucasfilm expects us to be excited and spend our money on their stuff, you aren't being honest with yourself.
