I was just looking over a quick video of Palpatine's lines in the Prequel Trilogy, and I happened to notice something that I didn't before. I knew that George Lucas edited Ian McDiarmid's voice in Revenge Of The Sith to sound more menacing. What I didn't notice until just now is that Lucas only really edited Palpatine's voice for one scene - the one that serves as the first climax to the film.

I'm talking about Palpatine's final seduction of Anakin into the Dark Side. It only happens for about two minutes or so, but his speech warps into a more demonic sound - one with more influence than the already charismatic figure already has. The actual speech of the character does not actually change earlier on in the scene - lines like "POOOOOOOOWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEER! UNLIMITED POOOOOOOOOOWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEER!" and "Once more, the Sith will rule the Galaxy!" are noticeably Ian McDiarmid's normal voice, albeit with different inflection than the way he usually talks. But the only time his voice completely changes is when Anakin is taking his final steps to becoming Darth Vader - or rather, when he needs a little push in order to abandon his allies.

I think this is important as a technical detail because it happens at Anakin's darkest hour - when he is torn between loyalty to the Jedi Order, his wife, and his longtime friend. Palpatine deliberately prays on Anakin's state of weakness and uses the Force in order to influence Anakin's mind and emotions in order to convince him that he is right to take this course of action. Palpatine's use the Force of is symbolized to the audience as his voice becoming way more sinister than it ever was at any point in the history of the franchise. It's a brilliant detail if it's deliberate. Anyone agree?

You might be onto something there. Without reading any of the EU stuff (other than the dark Horse stuff), I always assumed that Sidious had been feeding Anakin his dark visions of his mom, and Padme--maybe even caused the situation that led to Shmi being kidnapped by the Tuskans.

Would explain a lot. I had noticed the short voice change in the one scene before but never considered this.

I think that might be stretching it a bit as far as the Tusken Raiders go, but I totally think that Palpatine was responsible in some capacity for the visions Anakin received about his wife - and he probably killed her, too, according to speculation I saw in another thread.

Gotcha. I think I missed the speculation post about old Sheev killing padme.

While it's no longer cannon, most of the EU stuff I read delved deeply into the mechanizations Siidious used to move things around into his liking. The Clone Wars Cartoon did a little of this, but it was the Clone Wars Comics that showed a lot of reasons for why certain planets were made key battle-fields, and so forth. I sort of have this personal vision of Sidious being like a Shakespeare witch, casting spells into a cauldron (metaphor, people) behind the scenes when he wasn't on-film, or being shown.

Half of me is glad that the EU is gone due to things that didn't line up between film, comics, books and games, even within the same companies licensed to do these products. There are also a lot of elements and explanations that I really liked, however.

Back to the OP topic, if there wasn't hypnotism at work, there was definitely brain-washing and manipulation. To achieve his goals, Sidious could even use mind-tricks on those around Anakin. It's all speculation, but cool to share.

You're not too far off - in the final episode of The Clone Wars, he's seen doing just that.

I must have missed that. I really need to re-watch the last season, as I had so much going on as I was watching it. I often use film/movies as background noise while I work on my own projects.

Hm, interesting food for thought. This speculation and the other (about Palpatine draining Padmé's life Force to keep Anakin alive on Mustafar) strike me at first simply as some apologetic way to explain away some of the more noticeable weird things of the PT...

But darn it, they make so much sense when you guys explain it. It's so much better putting at least these two theories into one's mindset when watching the films.
