I was ok with TFA despite it mirroring ANH, and I really loved TLJ. But, for me the real disappointment was that the ST did nothing original, just rehashed the OT and erased the Skywalkers. That is all there is to it, I'm afraid.
I will say this however - I think we 'fans' are in part responsible for this dog's dinner. George sold the rights to Disney after the negative reaction of fans to the PT - they treated Jake Lloyd and the guy who played Jar Jar Binks atrociously, then started a Rian Johnson hate campaign which led to his film being retconned.

The problem is, DLF tried to please everyone with TROS and ended up pleasing no one.
Reylos - we got a 'kiss'. Finn fans - he gets to be FS. Skywalker fans - Rey becomes an 'honorary' Skywalker. Kylo fans - he gets redeemed. Kylo haters - he gets killed off. Those complaining that Rey was 'overpowered'....she ends up being Sidious's granddaughter, and inherited his 'power'. TLJ haters - it gets essentially erased. #notmyLuke - he is a completely changed character.

Maybe in future we fans should keep our mouths shut.

    Here's the power fans have.

Why would I make any more, when everybody yells at you all the time and says what a terrible person you are?
    - George Lucas, 2012, answering why he was stopping from making Star Wars movies.

That is fan power. They can tell people how wrong and terrible their work is and make them quit.

    Cheers,
    Jayson

From what I've read Disney did not like GLs story for the sequel trilogy, although they borrowed allot from it, for example, a disgruntled Luke. I don't think GL quit. He continued with the clone wars, and in my opinion if Disney liked his sequel story maybe he would have directed the first one who knows just my 2 cents.

I fully understand that you mean in terms of Star Wars films.

IMHOP, GL was embarrassed by the reception of TPM, I remember him constantly saying, he is a visual film maker/director which I thought was his excuse for TPM. I don't think he quit... ANH changed the film industry, it rocked the film industry, and for many TPM was a major disappointment... not for me, I went to the theater four times to see it, and I own several versions of TPM from VCD, DVD, bluray, digital, so i want to make clear that I am not bashing TPM in any fashion.

He'll continue making personal films for himself and friends... maybe thats quitting for some... he did retire from filmmaking... for me that's not quitting. he has done so much for film industry he deserves to retire at any point.

We may never see a Star Wars film directed by Rian Johnson, I respect him for not letting the fans sway him in anyway. Its just business...

If the sequel trilogy killed the Star Wars saga Kennedy would be long gone. according to rumors she might be gone soon, but with all the Star Wars content that we are getting this year alone, I believe the Star Wars saga is safe.

On another note, I think the last 2 Terminator films killed that franchise for good... maybe in about 10-20 years from now, if a filmmaker likes the Terminator franchise it will be resurrected.

I want to be honest, the first time I watched TLJ I enjoyed it so much. I stayed in my seat until the end credits finished rolling. It was days later I discovered on the internet that so many fans were angered by the film which was shocking to say the least.

After watching TROS, I finally understood why so many disliked TLJ because I felt the same way about TROS. I don't hate TROS but for me it does feel like a reton, so I agree somewhat.

The force ghost of Thomas Paine would laugh G.Walton Lucas off of the Celebration stage.

"Tis the business of little light sabers to shrink in the face of something, something, dark side."

For Concord Dawn's sake, quitting because muh words. KEK.
Lucas knows the sticks and stones song, he's old enough.

TLJ is my favourite SW film...even beating ESB. Hamill gave the performance of his career. Driver was spectacular in it. I've seen Oscar winning performances that weren't as good as Hamill and Driver were in this film.
The Canto Bight scene, although a visual feast, was perhaps the weakest part, but it was a clever twist that the FO and the Resistance bought their weapons from the same suppliers.
It was beautiful to look at, and I particularly enjoyed Crait and the stunning crystal foxes - and how animals played a major part in it.
All the characters were developed well; I have to admit I was genuinely disappointed that John Boyeaga's fans didn't like Finn's treatment in it; I personally thought it did his character justice, far more so than both TFA and TROS where he was little more than Rey's sidekick.

Most of all, I thought he set up things well for the final chapter. Poe as a more aggressive, hard a** leader. Kylo as a weak and not so efficient leader. Hux staging a coup after finding out who really killed Snoke. Rey having to explain the Force bond to the Resistance. Finn leading a stormtrooper revolt. Rey and Kylo bringing balance to the Force together; as hinted at with the 'yin/yang' mosaic in the cave on Acht To. I also had a hope that one of the 'recruited' stormtroopers might recognise Rey from her little trip to the Supremacy!

I know the film wasn't to everyone's taste but I was stunned at the depth of the hate it got. And that DLF responded by giving those haters what they wanted.

One thing I've learned in life is never give in to bullies.

Would you believe it - I'm from Tom Paine's hometown, huge hero of mine. Man was light years ahead of his time. Much respect, sah

Odd enough to add: "As A Man Thinketh" - was the first toilet mini-book I ever read.

I gather that Disney thought that shifting focus and tone of the entire saga into one where different planes of existence and the ins and outs of microbiology are explored, was going out on a limb a bit. Which is understandable considering the way the time spent on the senate in the PT made the saga lopsided in that respect already. Not to mention the reaction to it at the time.
