The predominant characters in the teaser trailer are all new and of the younger generations, so no evidence of any shift in focus from the earliest to the screen-ready drafts ... although, to be careful, there's no official confirmation a shift in emphasis from new to classic characters was ever a factor in the change between or preferences of the writers.

I keep thinking back to the unmitigated disaster of a film called Red Tails, GL's last movie.

If you haven't seen it, just imagine an entire film that contains every mistake and cringe-inducing line from the prequels, as well as some of the most cartoonish CG effects ever put on screen, and you still won't come close to understanding how terrible the film was. Despite the problems of the prequels, there are still aspects of them I love. Red Tails had none of that. It was a horrible film made about a subject and men of great historical importance-The Tuskeegee Airmen, and GL turned it into a silly, disjointed, cartoonish mess.

I like GL, he created the SW Universe which we all love. I really, really wanted to like the film Red Tails. However, at days end, it became clear to me that GL is not the filmmaker he once was, and his films showed a consistent trend of becoming worse with every new production.

With all this in mind, I have no problem with GL having as little to do with TFA as possible. It was high time GL passed the torch to a new generation of filmmakers, and I think the new SW Trilogy will benefit greatly from this decision.

I believe TFA is in very good hands with JJ, Kasdan, and crew.

I think all of the thoughts of panic for Disney not using GL's material for TFA will be put to bed when it is released.

Let's not forget GL did put out 3 new SW movies already and they continue to receive mixed reviews from SW fans. It's very possible Disney took what GL had and saw some things in the stories they felt had the same flaws as the flaws in the PT so they broke the story down, reshaped it they way they thought would be better and would please the SW fanbase. It's really logical for Disney to do this. Having the PT to go off of what people did and didn't like and being able to apply that to a GL written story and change it before you release it is extremely useful and I think will benefit the story in a HUGE way.

Seeing all of the practical props and location shooting is an indication of them taking some of the gripes with the PT into consideration and making those changes from a filming standpoint. I'm sure they did the same with the writing.

A super weapon that catapults planets around doesn't sound like a Lucas invention to me. That has JJ stamped all over it and I don't like it. I hope it's not true....

Unfortunately, the people who liked the PT are more Disney's usual fare, children. (Not that I hated the PT, but there's no denying it had its faults.)

    MTFBWY....

    {I didn't want to post right after myself, but I didn't know how to cite a quote in an existing post, sorry MODS.}

Stephen Colbert and George Lucas at the 2015 Tribeca Film Festival. Full quote from video on Youtube.

Said he's seen the first teaser and is going to try to look at the second teaser but wants to do it on the "big screen".

Must have been his planned Sequel Trilogy, which was then done in books in a totally different way, and now Disney has cleared that to perhaps focus on something both new and a bit closer to Lucas's thoughts.

It's possible in Lucas's story the grandchildren were both heroes. Instead it was changed to one hero and one villain or something like that. That latter would be preferable to me, I thought the EU overdid the hero offspring thing.

Oh I think Rey and Ren are based off Jaina and Jacen solo.

one of JJ first statements at the opening was: it`s a new story.

New is a point of view. I still think we get siblings. One good (Kira Rey), one bad (Kylo Ren.) What would surprise me is if they were Skywalkers and not Solos. OR, they were neither and both were students at Luke's academy and given those names.

Nods I still don't think Luke has kids doesn't quite make sense. I agree with the one good and one bad, and them being trained by Luke at one point part of his Seven padawans. The so called Seven.

Keep in mind: Stan Lee's ideas weren't used in the Avengers...and it turned out ok.
In fact, Disney discarded the ideas of dozens upon dozens of creators... hell, look what happened to Mandarin! But in the end, they hired creative visionaries to deliver a NEW story while not deviating from what made these characters icons to begin with.
So.....the franchise is in great hands. It's time to pass the torch to a new generation.

I think people read too much into the scrapping of the old EU and the "new stories" stuff.

If you think that means that nothing will be reused, I think you're in for a pretty big disappointment.

There's SO MUCH old EU that to literally not use any of it would be very difficult. I think you're still going to see some base similarities, such as a New Republic, a new hero (or villain) who is a Skywalker decendent, etc.

Now, that doesn't mean the stories will be carbon copies at all, but I think there will be similar elements told in a "new story."

Could have been all wrong, George said this to Stephen Colbert ...

    " They’re doing kind of a different story" ...

Seems like things were slightly altered but the main plot points will stay intact.
