Maybe in a couple decades if the well starts running dry. I doubt it though.

Myth xD More like an observation.
No its not. Stop embarassing yourself, please.
Everything from the clothings, weaponry, clone armours, ship designs (just look at the Naboo starfighter), sets (e.g: the gungan city looks like something straight out from a Valerian comic) and even the alien designs (just look at those cloning guys from AOTC) etc. All bear the 50s-60s "clean" futurism, which was always vastly extraneous to Star Wars...
Nothing looks like the good old 70s grittines from the OT, TFA and Rogue One.

The PT is more like Jupiter Ascending in its visual style... And that is not good imo. Star Wars had its look and never needed an "update".
Thankfully this is something that post-Lucas LFL perfectly understood.

    Incomplete observation.

What, the clothing is more technologically advanced?

Cloning guys who clone stormtroopers - do you need a reminder what those looked like in the originals?

Blockade runner, every Imperial ship ever, and Bespin were extraneous to Star Wars.

So what about the sand on tattoine looks clean 50-60s futuristic that didn't do so in 4 and 6?
    --- Double Post Merged, Jan 14, 2017, Original Post Date: Jan 14, 2017 ---
Most of the time the focus is on saving the princess and the various interpersonal dynamics - the death star gets one big moment around the middle, and then the whole final act revolves around it and features lots of rebels etc., but aside from that it's mostly in the background.

The settings at the beginning and end are heavily inspired by those from SW:
    Hoth = Tattoine + Yavin,
    Bespin = Death Star.

The scenarios that happen on either, and inbetween, often correspond to those that happened in the previous movie - sometimes more directly, sometimes less.

The style certainly is. The OT always kept the designs quite minimalistic. The PT designs are more sci-fi -ish, more over the top. Not the gritti realism. And where are the jackets?! Just compare General Leia's outfit with any of the PT politicans for instance.
Well, they certainly wouldnt've looked like the basic alien design from the PT (the 50s style again, only with a shrinked head added to a ridiculously impractical neck).
Uhm... No. The first thing you see in Star Wars is a blockade runner and an imperial ship. On the contrary, the star destroyer pretty much defines how Star Wars looks. Its grey minimalistic design is just simply brilliant. It screams dominance and authority. No decoration, no unnecessary colorful addtitions. Until the prequels ruined it by "updating" them. Always hated those red star destroyers, those look nothing like Star Wars imo. No dominance. Just the general prequel crap aimed for selling lego.

And I disagree about Bespin. Bespin is Star Wars to the core. It both screams classic Ralph Mcquarrie, and Flash Gordon. Futuristic, yet grounded enough to look like Star Wars. Nothing absurd, or out of touch like cloning facility in AOTC, the droid factory, the interior of the jedi temple etc.
Obviously I wasnt referring to the single returning location from the OT. Although in AOTC most of the establishing shots (e.g: when the naboo ship arrives) are jarringly different from ANH's style and tone. Also, there is a CGI ship in the background during the interior scene of Luke's latter home, which is completely extraneous. Again, Lucas tried to "update" even the already existing locations. This is the same mentality from the Special Editions. Adding more CGI crap to the screen and a dinosaur walking by the shot dosen't "update" anything.
"If not borken it is, fix it you should not."

However, if you already mentioned it, the Tatooine scene from the PT pretty much defines why the PT looks nothing like the OT, and why was there a gerenal misunderstanding of what made Star Wars good in the first place.
Namely, the binary sun ending in ep III. That is also the usual prequel green screen style. Lucas thought for some reason, adding a wider shot with more CGI crap on the screen "updates" the minimalistic shot from ANH. No, ffs... Adding more colorful crap to the screen dosen't "update" whats already been perfect. "It's so dense, every single image has so many things going on" This mentality is what ruined those CGI experimental movies... Star Wars shouldn't look like Jupiter Ascending imo.

Thankfully, post- Lucas LFL understood this. Both TFA and R1 are perfect mergings of the 70s minimalistic, grounded style and modern technology. Hopefully they'll continue to do this.
Sure, it costs more and much harder to create, but that is how it should be done.

That was SARCASM - all those environments were very clean looking, and you said all the environments in those movies were dirty and gritty (aside from some "extraneous stuff").

You can't just from "gritty used universe" to "yeah but they're still somewhat modest so that still counts" - it's a different argument.

I believe there were only 3 moments when those were in focus - Clones ending, ROTS opening and Obiwan's take-off; in all of those instances, they helped create a foreboding, menacing tone for those scenes.

But you can reduce all that to "lego selling", of course.

You're jumping topics again - no one ever argued that they weren't "updated" in any way, only that they didn't get a cleanex treatment as it's apparently popular to claim.

Geonosis would be a "new" location with similar traits - though I guess it doesn't count since it's "also a desert planet"?

Then you've the woods in 6, that aren't really any dirtier or grittier than those in 1 - aside from that, all the locations in 1-3 are capital cities like Bespin, so of course they're clean looking.

Those SE changes, and the Tattoine environments in I/II, aren't even comparable in tone or quality.

It's hard to take you seriously as a critic when you keep saying "crap" in reference to stuff that isn't even bad looking.

It should be clear enough that the "wide shot" was probably there because it was the final shot of the movie, like, you know, the similar one in Empire - and not a carbon copy of "the twin sun scene" from the first movie.

That meme only really applies to images that are cluttered with objects/details without any sense for aesthetics - you can't just go around pointing to every movie, or painting, or building that isn't "modest and minimalistic" (even in color schemes), and quote the the dense meme without invoking the wrath of r/moviescirclejerk.

I really think the style of the PT would work for a series set way in the future of SW or in the past of SW. Long enough that'd make sense for the drastic changes

Ah man, don’t make me defend the prequels. Of course the ship designs were noticeably different in character. One was the product of an authoritarian institution propagating conformity and absolutism. The other was a representational democracy (supposedly) fulfilling the will of the people. The two aesthetics were outward expressions of this fundamental distinction. You might think the alternate designs look dumb (I kind of do too), but the premise is entirely justified.

On the ‘used universe’ topic. Logically, things couldn’t have ALWAYS been used. They had to be new at some point. I think that’s what Lucas was aiming at. How this explains regressing from digital to analogue in 20 years, I don’t know though :)

I think I get where George’s mind was at. If the OT era was the late 70s/early 80s, then when would 20-30 years before that put you? Square in the middle of the chrome covered 50s. Home to his youthful inspiration for space fantasy, Flash Gordon.

Where the OT was a contemporary interpretation of the old serials of his formative years - informed by his myriad of influences since, the PT was a more faithful adaptation. It’s an intentional throwback to the ‘gee-whiz’ pastiche of yesteryear.

Taken from this perspective, the look and feel of the PT makes total sense. I contend that, if those movies had been better written, directed, and acted, this jarring departure would have been far more palatable. But what do I know?

Yes of course. I wouldn't complain at all if it was set in Old Republic era for instance. But the PT supposed to happen 18-20 years (!) before the OT.

Yes Im am aware of that. But the Star Destroyer was just an example. I could've picked any ship. And I dont think any of the PT designs are dumb (maybe with the exception of Grievous's hamster wheel and the Trade Fedaration Droid Controller) they are just not Star Wars-y to me, or look far more advanced than they should.
See: Arc- starfighter (looks like an X- wing, only decades in the future, and the design is not Star Wars-y to me), Naboo ships (too clean, too perfect, nothing like anything from the OT), every Separatist ship ( the designs look like far in the future after the OT) etc.
I don't want to dig deeper into this, becase its way too nitpicky to me, but long story short, imo the PT designs are extraneous to Star Wars. They look like something hunderds of years after the events of the OT.

Im not advocating against new designs btw. I think the new Rogue One ships for instance are great and fitting additions to the universe.
But when I watched the PT, it never ever convinced me that it is the same universe as the OT. And that is my problem. Too clean, too futuristic.

When I was watching TFA or Rogue One on the other hand, I needed less than 10 minutes to realise im finally watching real Star Wars again.

I completely understand and can certainly relate. One of my petty gripes was that the tech in TFA didn’t seem to have evolved much in 30 years. BB8 was certainly an upgrade, but TIEs and X-wings? Still? Is this the pinnacle of star fighting for some reason?

Well, if one compares the F-15 and F-22, F-35 and the MiG-29.....they're barely different. Same basic designs, differences in electronics, materials and engines.

No, that is not what I meant at all. Its seems you have a problem with understanding "clean" in regards of the OT.
I wasnt saying that everything is gritty and dirty in Star Wars nor that everything should be. "Clean" aesthetics are integral part of the OT designs. "Clean" in that context means that the designs look like real and working objects in a foreign enviroment. The Star Destroyer is basically Star Wars in one design.
Simple, modest, convincing, practical. No decoration, no unnecessary colorful addtitions to sell more merchandise.
To put it more simple to you: Clean Star Wars= Star Destroyer, X-wing, Millenium Falcon (Star Wars itself).
    Clean post-Lucas stuff= U-wing (very Star Wars-y)
Clean prequel stuff= Naboo starfighter, Arc-starfighter (extraneous to SW).
Never said that, but its true on a certain level, especially for ANH.
I was merely referring to the design there, not the emotions it supposed to deliver in a context of a scene.
I didnt jump anything. The ideology behind the designs of the PT is to "update" Star Wars with more clean and futuristic 50s-60s stuff. A grave mistake.
The perfect counterexample to this is Felucia. Just a couple of seconds dedicated to a character you dont know nor care about, yet in the most over the top anti-star wars location you can get. Or the place where Darth Maul and the two jedi fight (over something about you dont know nor care about again). Its right next to a hangar, yet so over the top and ridiculous... Why is there such place right next to a hangar and a palace?!
Thats great to hear, since im not a critic. I have an MA degree and a well paying full time job. This is just a hobby and fun to me. Im not dedicating my life to convince others to like a generally and critically panned, golden razzie winning trilogy, like you do. Besides, even if I was a critic, I still wouldn't care what you think about my opinion, since our taste in movies are clearly vastly different. I debated too many manchildren in the last decade who defend the prequels, to care. Some had insightful arguments, some just crapped out annoying, constrained, forced, and far-fetched false arguments to defend the undefendable. You are one from the latter ones, and one of the most ignorant and fanatic ones to add though.
Yes, it was the final shot, cogratulations for the obesrvation. Go back and try to process what I meant to say in that paragraph.
Yes you can, since we are talking about a universe which is supposedly the same in aesthetics and color schemes. What you do is like arguing about how a Picasso is the same as a Boccaccio... If Rogue One and TFA managed to do it right, why couldn't the PT?

Maybe you can let me in on the joke. Is an Ep3 set design, included for transitional effect to Ep4, supposed to be counterevidence of some sort? Or is this just a troll post?

Would you mind connecting the dots for me then. Are you saying that scene is an accurate representation of the overall aesthetic of the PT?

"On a certain level" as in "half".

Alright are you aware that there are 2 things people most complain about with regards to the pt's environment, which are:
    -advanced technahlagy
    -Cleanex instead of "used universe".

So when are you using the term "clean" to refer to something else entirely (modesty/practicality of ships and tech), the resulting confusion is on your part alone.

You've got Occam rolling in his grave with that constant merch talk, do you know that.

    k

Are you saying that if you were instead an unemployed drunk hobo, your sloppy movie opinions would've been more of an issue?

In order to qualify as "critically panned", the rating's got to be AT LEAST below 50% - though, reasonably, even much lower than that.

What I do is correct smug opinions that don't hold up to scrutiny or aren't generally reasonable, to one degree or another.

If it's "undefendable", how could the other group have had any "insightful arguments"?

That's a lot of salt, in reaction to me calling you a poor film critic.

You... said that the colors being too fancy or saturated was crap because it was "so dense" and not like the original scene?

You didn't seem to be aware of the wide shot - final shot connection when you wrote this comment:

    No, I'm not.

But you are arguing that Boccaccio is crap because he doesn't look like Picasso.

    What, who?

It made only slightly less sense than the Death Star looking hell level on Cloud City.
    --- Double Post Merged, Jan 14, 2017, Original Post Date: Jan 14, 2017 ---

Is that clean white corridor from the beginnig of EpIV an example of "used universe", or is it "chrome-covered"?

Well, as a clean shiny hallway in a trilogy full of clean shiny hallways, it doesn't particularly stand out, does it?

Then again, it doesn't really stand out in 4-6 either, as about 50% of the environments there are of a similar nature.

    Half level? K.
Judging by this pointless response, its you, who are confused.
Its just the truth, pal. We are talking about a director who changed the ending of his masterpiece because dead characters don't sell toys...
No, I obviously never meant to say that. This is the only thing you do on this forum? Make troll presumptions? At least try to be creative then, and make them funny or whatever. This is just a waste of data this way... Besides, you perfectly described how I imagine a film critic's look...
If you mean Rottentomatoes, its below 60% there (TPM is rotten with 55, bro).
So the PT, and its cast and crew didnt win a razzie?
Mostly for the debatable parts (what we are talking about right now is not one of those). I've read a very insightful analysis regarding the prophecy for instance. I still hate it, and think its perfectly redundant and contradicts with the OT, but I accepted the guy's reasoning.
Since im not a film critic, ok I guess? Anyways, how is using words like "crap" would make me a poor film critic? Lots of the professional hobos (critics) use lot worse words than that.
How can anyone not be aware of that scene being the final shot? Since the connection dosent matter at all in the context of what im saying there, another pointless troll conjecture by you, I guess. Go and re-read the paragraph and try to process it...
So, in your opinion the Star Wars universe 18 years before ANH should look and feel entirely different?
You are the PT guy. Go figure it out.
The enitre city was designed for that scene, so it makes sense.
