This has me both excited and scared. This guy knows the story / obviously / so I'm excited that it will be a mysterious and intriguing title. What scares me if the thought of a "The First Order Strikes Back" or anything along those lines.

But this guy's got it in the bag, I'm sure.

Friendly reminder that there's no unwritten rule that states that Star Wars titles have to follow a specific naming convention beyond the whole Episode # thing. And even then, Rogue One just threw that last part out the window.

Oh yeah, I'm aware :) just voicing my opinion that I'd find such a title...a bit too on-the-nose myself? I'd probably grow to like it, but at first thought, I'm just hoping for something...unique, I guess.

I'm not sure VIII is going to be "fun" in the sense that it's close in tone to TFA. I still expect it to be the "dark middle chapter," but I trust that it's not going to be an ESB rehash. I take it to mean that the film is going to be more character-driven and get inside the heads of our characters more. A bit more introspective, like how I thought Age of Ultron was going to be, and was trying to be, with the farmhouse scene.

I think ESB is a lot of fun! At the same time, it's certainly the darkest of the OT - and the weirdest.

I'm sure RJ can strike the same balance with EP8.

    Huh, so it was Boyega...

Personally, I think there's been a perspective thing here. Let's not forget Rian's main work to date is Looper, Brick, and three episodes of Breaking Bad, including Ozymandias; in relation to his other work, this will easily be of the lightest tone. And it could still pull that off and be the darkest Star Wars film to date.

Daisy Ridley also said that Episode VIII was darker. Someone brought up to Carrie Fisher that Adam Driver said the movie was darker too, to which she retorted "but it's not like he's the one doing the comedy scenes!"

Perhaps this is just the angle they want to come with after Rogue One. There was so much talk about RO being "adult", perhaps they don't want to emphasize that up front this time.

Plus, after all the TFA = ANH talk, perhaps they don't want to go into this one with a bunch of Ep8 = ESB talk.

Pretty much. I really doubt Rian Johnson went from Brick and Looper to Guardians of the Galaxy...
And Star Wars was always fun to begin with. Not one- liner fun or gag fun, but cleverly written humour fun. They should really avoid making a Batman v Superman like over the top crap (sorry DC fans).

I suggest you check out The Brothers Bloom. It's a quirky film, but RJ really creates a world for these con artist brothers to live in. I loved both Brick and Looper, but I actually think I had the most fun with Brothers Bloom. I only bring it up because it might give you (and anyone else who may have missed it) a better idea what RJ could bring to the lighter or weirder material VIII may be dealing with.

    I agree.

Brick came out when I was in my early 20's, and I was just really impressed with it at the time because the story and characters were so strong. Brothers Bloom is the same way. The movie worlds RJ creates feel tangible, with lots of little details, and I think that's perfect for SW.

When I heard that he'd be writing and directing VIII, I was pretty excited. I like his work and I like that he's certain to give us a unique take.

I'm sure darker means characters being tested. But also in darker times there can be humor. I'd say Rian has struck a balance between the darker moments and humor and fun.

    On a side note...

I was thinking about this and was wondering is there any confirmation other than Carrie saying there is a Han Solo funeral? She said that at SWC Europe I think.

If there is, well that would be somber and dark especially if Kylo showed up.

Given that he's being hauled off to see Snoke at the time when funeral rites would most likely happen, I don't think that that's going to happen.

Maybe he visits Han's memorial in secret and that starts the catalyst for him turning (?).

But, as I said, the timing on it would make absolutely no sense. A funeral would be held a few days after the battle. Unless Kylo Ren only needed a day of training and he could haul his ass to some Republic system without being caught (good luck with that after that neat little declaration of war which involved serial-planetcide), it's not going to happen.

I'm probably alone on this but I still think we're getting some kind of time jump in this movie. I still think we might see the Lucasfilm logo, then straight into a prologue with Luke and Rey. Fade out, then "A Long Time Ago..." and crawl.

Gonna be hard for Finn to carry all that action straight out of a coma, or Kylo to fight Luke and Rey with only a few days (hours?) of training.
