Back then it was because it drew very natural comparisons to Star Trek, which did have a very diverse cast.

 

Its BS Lando is a great character but there was criticism that he was a token inclusion. But there was criticism that he betrayed the heroes, the fact that he hit on Leia played to negative stereotypes and so on.

I think over time the naysaying dropped more recently criticisms of stereotypes or poor portrayals of stereotypes are louder.

Historically in movies at times black men were portrayed as after white women. Thus the complaint at the time ESB came out was that by hitting on Leia Lando played into that.

One of the most beautiful aspects of Star Wars is that skin color difference between members of human species has no any meaning whatsoever next to all other alien species around. Human species, that's it and its absolute truth.

Just like The Force, that created us all as the same and equal , I find also to be a fundamental truth.

 

And don't forget the main villain in the OT was a 7ft black guy......

He was the mastermind and the main antagonist of Epsiode VI but I'd argue that Vader was the main villain because he had much greater impact on the main trio than any other bad guy.

 

id actually call vader an "anti-hero" of sorts...maybe that's why kylo worships him
