Is that why Luke never went tot he Darkside?

 

The lack of wholly unique and new spacecraft in the ST is pretty depressing. More of the same, just a minor tweak and a different paint job. And aren't there going to be other alien factions aligning themselves with the Resistance other than the Mon Calamari (apart from the scant few seen milling about in the shadows)? How small is the GFFA?? I've already given up hoping for a new planet in the ST that's stunningly distinct from the requisite sand/snow/rocky planet that seems to keep showing up over and over (and, no, the planets in TLJ hardly made an impression).

 

We often forget that the SW’s planets reflect the elements of nature and civilisation, therefore they need to feel “terrestrial” if you know what I mean, apart from sand, woods, sea, jungle, rock, buildings, there is little else to show... Getting wacky with the design can be counterproductive and could take the audience out of the story and the world way too easily... the OT perfectly established the environment in the saga and it would be too distracting getting too fancy with world building in a sequel trilogy that is bringing the story to an end. George invented a renaissance for his world which he executed in the PT. It was rich and interesting but at times the story was dragged down but spurious and random design (Kamino/gungans)... I feel that the new creators learnt from that and decided to err in the side of caution. They decided that the new republic was not going to end up being a time of splendour like the republic in the prequels, but a time of complacency and ill management. It’s a decadent time, where people live in the ruins of the past. The saga world has become dystopian again. It’s an interesting concept that at the same time roots the story aesthetically in what has come before.
