That could work. Leia and Chewie were close.

I can't tell female Wookiees from male Wookiees... so there's that. Also, if there is a young filmmaker among you... Yaddle-on-Yaddle please.

Although Anakin and Padme's romantic moment from AOTC still haunts me, a kiss between two lovers of whatever gender is no problem for me. As long as the stories will not devolve into slash fiction (which they won't), I do not care. I just want good stories.

I try to live my life as an inclusive, live and let live kind of guy. So in keeping with that philosophy, I have no problem with gay/lesbian characters being a part of the SW Universe.

One of my all-time favorite badass sci-fi characters, Admiral Cain from the re-imagined Battlestar Galactica, was a lesbian.

Do you mean the character or Ian McDiarmid? Because yes, McDiarmid is gay, but I don't see how that affects Palpatine one way or another.

So they can be gay, just not, you know, have actual feelings. Got it.

Ian is not a character. He is an actor, and I'm well aware of his sexuality. Sheev, on the other hand, is the character he portrays. I think Sheev was gay.

I didn't know Ian is gay. Learned something new. Yes, they can be gay in reference, just don't want to see it.

I am just trying to figure out what in the five movies he appears in indicates Palpatine's sexuality one way or another.

I think he and Mace Windu were gay... not together though.

is Ian actually officially 'out'? Am not sure he is? Not saying he is not gay am wondering if he is still in the closet because that would be so sad.

I think perhaps Mace's defenestration at the hands of Sheev was symbolic of a power struggle within the gay jedi community.

I agree. I don't think any of the other council members were just Mace. Something about comparing an arena of bugs watching his friends chained up to a "party" seemed gay.

    Warning: Opinion incoming:
I don't wan't our own weird earth hangups getting all up in my Star Wars. I don't want SW to remind me of our socio-political problems. I want it to transport me to the GFFA. Activist storytelling and character placement will only hinder and date SW. I don't want blatant social commentary on such a divisive issue in SW...that's what Star Trek is for!

Every time I see a gay character forced into a story, it takes me right out of the story (personally). I'm just like "I get it. There are gay people. You don't have to keep reminding us. We're all aware." It usually just feels forced.

Star Wars is a fairy tale for a family audience. Not the place this sort of thing. It would be like refferencing abortion or gun control, and SW will come out on one side or the other, alienating half of its audience. Its not a good look. Once you get into politics, you're bound to start offending and alienating people, one way or the other. So far I think SW has done a pretty good job at steering clear of these sorts of things.

It's a fairy tale. Its not a sexual story. This will not make Star Wars better. It will pander to a tiny portion of the population who are going to watch Star Wars anyway. And look what this issue is about to do to this forum, just speculating about it. I can feel the hate swelling in this thread already. We don't need this.

No hard feelings to anyone or anything like that. This is just my opinion on how this issue relates to Star Wars.

He's never made any public statements about it but I don't believe he's ever hidden it, either. Most of his work is in the theater in UK so there's no real value to him making a big deal of it for the US press.

Since no hard feelings are intended I am going to respond to this in a way that is reflective of my beliefs without hopefully coming across as an attack. The fact is that having a gay character is not "political." It is very easy to make a statement like yours when you are heterosexual and have the privilege of the default assumption being that everyone is straight until proven otherwise, but people are not gay because they are being "political." They're gay because...they're gay.

I am sorry that it takes you out of the story, but the assertion that Star Wars is not a "sexual" story is an odd one, considering the entire story arc revolves around human romantic relationships in both trilogies. No, it isn't "sexual." Nor is being gay "sexual." I don't think anyone here wants to see hardcore (or even softcore) sex scenes in these movies, but until people stop immediately thinking about what two gay people do in bed whenever they are included as characters, there will still be value in including them as characters. Just as there is value in including women as main characters, people of non-white ethnicity as characters, and yes, wookiees, droids, and all sorts of characters that provide a different perspective on the world we live in, which, like it or not, the Star Wars saga has ALWAYS been related to.

And if you are a member of a "tiny portion of the population," whether that means being black or being a female soldier or being LGBT, there is value in seeing yourself represented in fiction, whether the dominant group is uncomfortable with feeling it "forced" on them or not.

Also, gay people have families, too. There is nothing about their inclusion that makes a movie not "for a family audience."

Homosexuality is only political to those who make it so. To those who want to relate it to some policy or law that would limit it from their view.

To the majority of people, homosexuality is just life. And that's what films are meant to reflect.
