After a thousand years of the Sith hiding in the shadows, Palpatine is the one who got to take the Chosen One as his apprentice. Palpatine’s Force Lightning appears to be the most powerful we have ever seen. Palpatine orchestrated the long-awaited revenge of the Sith and established the Galactic Empire. If you buy into JJ’s take, Palpatine even managed to come back as the puppet master for a whole new trilogy. And Palpatine was essentially the last of the Sith as well.

Sometimes I wonder - why Palpatine? Was Palpatine just super lucky to be alive in the time of the Chosen One? Could another Sith like Dooku or Plagueis theoretically have done the same thing if they were in the same position?

Or maybe Palpatine was indeed just a “regular” Sith, but rather than just being lucky, he just happened to be especially cunning with a high midi-Chlorian count, and he parlayed his abilities to become a very skilled opportunist?

Or the third possibility - Palpatine was the “Ultra Sith.” Sort of like how Anakin was the Chosen One, Palpatine was destined from the beginning to be the ultimate Sith who was always going to be the one presiding over the Sith’s ultimate or triumph or ultimate failure.

    What do you think?

I think Sheev was exceptionally evil. His master was the head of the galactic banking clan and had the power and money to manipulate the entire galaxy. He pretty much funded the Separatist movement, enough to impose enough of a threat for the Republic to create an unprecedented central military. Playing both sides he was able to rise to absolute power. Having the chosen one on his side proved to be his downfall more than it was an asset.

Of course Sheev/pleageus created the "chosen one" with the force. A good idea at the time but, they fulfilled a prophecy that proved to be the downfall of the Sith.

    Especially oversaturated.

The more I've seen of him the less impressed and interested I become.

A little Palpatine goes a long way but a lot brings drastically diminishing returns, very quickly.

It's all cause of the Force, right? Without Palps there would be no balance and no ability for the chosen one to achieve that balance. Everyone in Vader/Anakin's story is a piece placed there by the force for him to use and play a role in his achieving balance.

When I was a kid, I always thought Vader or Luke could have taken him. Not that he wasn't powerful, but he wasn't unstoppable. Luke refused to fight him and Vader - who is clearly incredibly strong physically - just picks him up and throws him. Not exactly impossible to beat. I saw him as more of an evil wizard when I was a kid. Powerful in the Force, but kept a physically strong #1 by his side for a reason, which is common in fantasy.

But the prequels and sequels made him significantly stronger. Pretty much the strongest Force user and not someone who can be beaten alone.

Lucasfilm, either under George Lucas or Disney Studios, has never confirmed that Palpatine and Plagueis had created Anakin. According to Lucas, the Force itself (through midi-chlorians) had created Anakin in response to Plagueis' fiddling around with midi-chlorians for his own gain. Under Disney's Star Wars, Anakin was simply created by the Force via midi-chlorians. No one has confirmed that the two Sith Lords were responsible for Anakin's birth.

The Sith are in Rey. He told her what would happen if she defeated him. only way to defeat the grand Sith Lord with all the Sith in them is to turn them to the light. Rey should go dark now and maybe Ben can turn her back at some point. You cant kill without opening yourself to the dark side which gave Palpatine the opening to move in.

Even then the next Dark sider will start the cycle again however with much less power to start with as they begin to merge through master apprentice conflict.

I think if you listen to the audio commentary for ROTS, during the scene where Palpatine tells the story of Darth Plagueis, someone (I want to say Rick McCallum?) says that this scene explains the origins of Anakin Skywalker.

That’s pretty close to a confirmation, in my opinion.

Palpatine is basically the Sauron/Voldemort of Star Wars.
Voldemort returns through a magic ritual and thanks to Horcruxes, Sauron is divine being to begin with and you can destroy his physical form but never the spirit...
    Palpatine, somehow he returns.

If you accept the revelation of TROS, then there’s really only one true Sith and that same entity has been passed on throughout the millennia. The distinct utility of someone like Palpatine then would be that he was in the position to operate as an unassuming false face. He was the mask the Sith needed to lure the galaxy into a place of misguided trust.
    Maybe you mean this?

“It's such a creepy little scene. Just so bold and so audacious to put it in this kind of setting and having this weird blob in front of you, music playing, and all of this really essential information in terms of the origins of Anakin; Palpatine’s overriding, unbelievable confession of, not only how he came to power, but also of this crucial element that is the hook that finally drags Anakin down.”
I don’t know. Kinda hard to say what he meant by that. I mean McCallum was George’s producer. He wasn’t really involved in the story aspect. We know he read the January 2003 rough draft that did include Palps revealing to Anakin he was his ‘sorta’ dad. So maybe he was still working from that older mindset?

I have read about this story bit left out of the movie some years ago, maybe because it was too much of the same lightning in a bottle as the ESB revelation.
But personally, I'd like it better than this chosen one, Mesiah, Jesus analogy we ended up with. Sure, they can retcon it. But it won't be the same.
They already have to convolute around the chosen one idea so much, as with sequels it doesn't really make sense...
It was already tricky back then and we've got theories and explanation in a sense: Yeah, of course Anakin was chosen one, he destroyed the Sith (Palpatine) and died in the process, fulfilling the prophecy... and then, sequels come in.

Imagine, Palpatine really creates Anakin! And the Jedi, the deluded and blindsided old sect that they are in the prequels before their downfall have only explanation. We have this prophecy in Jedi books, about chosen one, a Mesiah.
Basically a Sith champion made through the force based on science. And thus, incomprehensible to Jedi, because one, Sith vanished years ago and two, Plagueis and Palpatine pursued a knowledge appearantly not known to any Jedi.

Maybe it is because I am young and like the grounded fantasy in Star Wars, but with the adition of midichlorians... which basically fits this type of civilization that can travel through galaxy and harness the power of stars, it makes sense.
It's not a magic, they can explain it with a science.

Plus, you have no conundrums about how does it work. The initial speculations and hints were on Rey, that the force has to be in ballance (hell, even the Mortis arc of Clone Wars is all about that). Anakin is dead, but Kylo Ren exists so force ballances him through Rey...
But nah, Jesus died and somehow, Rey is a Palpatine and the whole chosen one story is a nonsense.

I am not from US, but based on my pop culture knowledge from shows, McDonalds and other sources,
I can see this written on these boards situated along the road or pathway to a church.

    They have planet killing weapons,
    of course they do.

He is, but his return was rather awkward for me, but I still enjoyed the actor's performance.

McDiarmid is a fine actor who enjoys chewing scenery; that saying I think they should never have brought him back. It might have worked if he was a creepy Sith version of a FG, who sought Rey or Kylo as a possible host, but bringing him back in the flesh just didn't work for me.

And sadly...it also made the Skywalkers surplus to requirements. TROS left me with the suspicion Terrio, Abrams and DLF had no affection for Lucas's characters at all.

Outside the movies, George Lucas has made it fairly plane that the prophecy was true and Anakin was definitively the chosen one. But inside the actual movies, it’s left pretty vague. The only character who seemed to genuinely believe in the prophecy was Qui-Gon. The rest of the Jedi never really appeared to give it much credence. Maybe it was true, maybe it wasn’t. It didn’t get presented as something that sincerely guided anyone’s choices or actions outside of one guy.

I understand how the presence of a miracle birth and salvation through self-sacrifice give the coding of messianic messaging, but the films themselves aren’t explicitly promoting that perspective. Ultimately, the Anakin character ends his journey by making a better choice that was informed by his personal experiences and emotional relationships. That’s the important part. That it also technically fulfilled this supposed destiny is totally beside the point, I feel. Getting hung up on that doesn’t make a lot of sense to me.

Personally, I like the idea that Palpatine isn't all that strong at all- his power comes exclusively from his position. Vader is the muscle, Palpatine is the boss.

I think the OT portrays this well, too. Palps spends the third act having Vader fight Luke- then in the end, he takes a cheap shot at Luke, and is eventually yeeted off a balcony by Vader. It wasn't some big dramatic anime fight.

The expanded universe, prequels, etc do seem to imply that Palpatine is especially strong, but I think this is a bad move. I think it's far more interesting if his power comes from his influence over others, rather than basically being an ultra-mighty wizard.
