Clear your mind. I'm just as furious as you about the way Finn's character is being handled. Like the way Rose has to explain to Finn how horrible it was for her to be a slave.... Like come on, Finn doesn't need to be "lectured" about that, he if anyone should know how its like to be brought up as a slave (among many examples).

When I said abused child, I meant the way Luke tried to murder him - that's what made Rey feel compassion.

Well, the way they can do it is of course to have Luke appear as a Force ghost frequently in the film. Actually I wouldn't be surprised if that's something they're planning in the writing room right now. Maybe JJ already pitched this idea.

I think Rogue One made over a billion because it was riding on the waves of TFA. And the fact that it had TIE-fighters, X-wings and the Death Star. Now personally, I think Rogue One is a wonderful film for completely different reasons than those, but that's another story.

I do agree with you that TLJ is a turning point. From now on, it can basically go anywhere. If I had to take a guess, I'd say downhill.

I think what a lot of people are missing is that everyone watched TLJ and about 30% didn't like it. Of that 70% who see it positively, most still have some issues with it, I'd even guess that there's a significant portion who are waiting for their final verdict based on Ep9. Unless JJ creates some magic, I'm going to venture a significant portion of that 70% will be lost as well by the end of this trilogy. Then another portion will be lost because the end of this trilogy will spell the end of the OT cast. I'm not going to venture what the numbers are because that would just be spit balling, but TLJ needs Ep9 to succeed to validate it as worthy for some of that 70%.

Beyond that, they kind of negated any hype over Finn in TLJ, who was a bright spot in TFA. There's some loss steam when it comes to Poe as well, so we're really left with only Kylo and Rey as the characters to bring fans back. Now I'm not saying Ep9 won't make money, but I think moving forward, the days of 200+ million opening weekends might not be so much money in the bank as it used to be.

That's my impression, but time will tell for certain. I think Disney, KK, RJ and to a lesser extent JJ took missteps. It will be interesting to see if JJ can salvage this or how many new fans the ST really brought in to replace the 30% of fans who are no longer going to be repeat watchers of the films.

70-30 yes when it comes to the casuals. But us hardcore vets who invested almost 30 years in this saga, the split is 50-50.

The younger hardcores, the ones raised during the PT & later seems 60-40.

So i guess all this fuzzy math adds up.

No, it doesn't add up. The casual audience gave the film a 89% approval rating. Based on the unscientific polls here on this site it breaks about 70/30. The people reading/commenting on this forum I'd consider hardcore fans.

You must be confused. The 89% was the scientific comScore poll of the ticket buying audience. Also, if you're going to continue to leave me negative ratings all over this forum simply because you didn't like a movie you might want to take a deep breath and take a look at your life.

    http://pro.boxoffice.com/weekend-last-jedi-jumanji-new-years/

"The Last Jedi earned $52.4 million over the 3-day, just beating out Jumanji‘s $50.5 million. But a big boost on Monday allowed Jumanji to claim the extended 4-day weekend title with $67.0 million, ahead of Jedi‘s $65.5 million.

Last Jedi will have only held the top spot for two frames, down from three frames for 2016’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and four frames for 2015’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Credit this to a combination of a steeper drops for Last Jedi as word of mouth has been much more divisive than this decade’s other films in the franchise"

For those who need further proof that TLJ is divisive, over the four day Holiday weekend Jumanji has topped Star Wars at the box office. If these numbers hold TLJ would have spent only two weeks on top of the box office

Yes, TLJ also became the #1 domestic film of the year this weekend, but these numbers have to scare the hell out of Disney going forward. The fact that The Last Jedi couldn’t hold off a really mediocre family film with relatively low expectations like Jumanji is not a good sign for Episode 9, Solo or any SW films going forward.

If it wasn’t for the absolutely explosive opening weekend (from good will built up by previous films) this film would be in a lot of trouble. People went looking forward to seeing the legendary Luke Skywalker, but instead were forced to attend his funeral and be left with characters like Po, Finn + Rose that nobody cares about going forward.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. This isn’t the film people wanted to see. In my humble opinion the disrespect shown to the original characters, combined with a very flawed film has created a massive backlash that SW is going to have to deal with going forward.

Unfortunately Jumanji was a better written story.

Saw it Friday and it played on the largest auditorium in my local theater. Same one TLJ was on when I went see it. Entire family loved it.

Much higher scores on RT, IMBD, etc. Critic scores while higher for TLJ are really not much lower than TLJ.

Yet another member trying to say TLJ is a disappointment at the box office, and is therefore a disappointment as a film......

    hsop.gif

It's the 8th highest domestic grossing film of all time, two weeks into release. Oh no. How can Star Wars possibly survive...

And as for Jumanji, a reboot of a popular IP, staring The Rock, Kevin Hart, and Jack Black......opening on a holiday weekend as a young children/family friendly comedy......

OF COURSE it's going to do amazing at the box office. They've got mainstream audiences in the bag.

None of that determines the quality of TLJ one, freaking, bit.

This chart is of absolutely no use as it doesn’t take inflation into account...When inflation is taken into account TLJ is #66 (it will obviously move higher) my point isn’t that the film isn’t a hit, it clearly is, but it is also underperforming. I mean really a SW film held the #1 spot for only two weeks and then lost to Jumanji and you think that is a good thing? Once word got out about this film it started to decline rapidly and that’s a fact not an opinion

They made a mediocre film that was disrespectful to the original characters and the audience is turning on it.

Is Jumanji a good movie? Redo of the one with Robin Williams or a sequel?

Scott Mendelson has been waving his SW pom pom’s (other columnists at Forbes disagree with him) from day one. He seems to not want to admit that the film is underperforming. Here is a more sober view from James Berardinelli

"The Last Jedi" now on track to make a total of about $600M domestic. Prior to its release, industry expectations had been in the range of $750M. (Not good news for Disney.) "The Force Awakens" domestic gross was $930M. "Rogue One" was $530M .The $750M is an industry expectation, not mine. The movie is seriously underperforming.

But the movie is a hit. A big hit. And that's the only thing that matters.

Say whatever you want about the box office, but shut the blast up about box office numbers being a reflection of the film's quality, and an affirmation of your opinion of the film.

Avatar and JW are on the list of highest grossing films for crying out loud...

    Stop beating a dead bantha.
