I bring it up as I think audience erosion is going to be a legitimate concern for SW films going forward.
We now are looking at an Episode 9 that has none of the original characters. Did anyone here honestly get excited to see new SW films that didn’t star the classic characters? That was the main drawing card and now that is gone in favor of less interesting copies of the original classic characters. Are people going to care about SW films that star Poe, Finn and Rose? Also, there is zero positive buzz for Solo which is only a matter of months away.

I honestly think that the Last Jedi has hurt the fanbase. I hear more fans say that they couldn’t care less about Episode 9 than they are looking forward to it and I think TLJ is in large part to blame. Star Wars will continue to be big, but I think it’s days of being an untouchable box office force may be over

TLJ is already the #1 movie in the US for 2017, and it's got weeks of earnings to go. In short order it will be the #1 movie of 2017 worldwide. You've got to really work to spin that into it being a box office disappointment.

I know that some of the people that didn't like the movie really want the box office take to validate their opinions, but it just isn't going to happen. The movie is a massive hit.

But don't worry. That doesn't make it good - nor would a poor box office performance have made it bad. Lots of terrible movie make a ton of money, and lots of great movies bomb.

That was assured as soon as they decided to make a Star Wars movie every year.

There were literally reports of people saying "I hated it, but I'm going to see it two-three more times". :D

Empire had a domestic $200,000,000 drop off from ANH. By today's standards that would be about $800,000,000. In a market that was far less saturated in terms of not just film but all kinds of media and entertainment.

2nd legs are bound to take hits, 2nd legs that are controversial are bound to take even bigger hits. It still doesn't mean much.

Middle movies are always less likely to hit what their predecessor did. When they do, it's a shock.
The exceptions are usually for small movies. Or movies inside a universe like the MCU where it's a long form story rather than a concise trilogy.
Meaning people are more willing to see how a story starts and ends than how it unfolds in the middle.
At least in theaters. And provided the second film warrants a third. Looking at you Back to the Future.
Indiana Jones had Raiders then dropped with Temple of Doom and went up with Last Crusade.

Yea, after 40 years, Star Wars is struggling.

I'll be all my credits that Luke will be in it and the ST was always about passing the torch to the next generations. Nothing New.

Seeing the OG Star Wars only 1 place behind TPM which was a giant hit in 99 is nothing but breathtaking!
If "Gone with the wind" wasnt re-released 20 times Star Wars IV would easily be #1 of all time, for sure.

edit: And I know that Lucas re-released SW 2 times too ;)

Isn't it a bit early to talk about Monday results?

It was over when Disney decided to go with the yearly release- scheme. Imo this way Star Wars simply experiences franchise fatigue faster than the Superhero genre for insatnce. Even if TLJ turned out to be the best thing since slived bread, SW is just far more limited as far potential goes. It will always be huge, but to constantly expect it to break every record possible is just bogus...

If you look at the trailer numbers you can easely see that the hype around TLJ never even came close to TFA. Sure, the movie turned out to be more divisive than the previous two, but clearly the 46 million views on TLJ's official trailer is very far from the 90+ (in 2015 dec.) of TFA.

I could see a Force Ghost. Given what we saw with Yoda, you bet that Luke will have more to do. Not that I'm against that. I actually like that development for really it makes the ability more interesting, verifying Obi-wan's words to Vader. Plus, Legends did this quite a bit. Also, I kind of want a scene in Episode Nine kind of like Return of the King, where the Force Ghosts of Luke, Anakin, Obi-wan Yoda etc. rise up to fight via undead army style.

I know some may be turned off but man that would be epic. :) But I digress.

Rogue One, I can honestly see that. It reminds me a lot of Ironman 3 in the strictest sense that the movie was the followup to Avengers which was immense. I also enjoy that movie and in my view, it is my favorite of these new Disney LucasFilm movies. Having seen TLJ a second time, my view on the movie is less favorable.

I don't hate it, but I lament at some sloppy choices/ execution. And really, to be honest; it kind of burnt me out of SWs. At least from exploring the NC. Solo, even before TLJ, I didn't care about seeing it as I never liked Han as a character.

As for the future, I think it is still bright. TLJ financially is still a powerhouse, but hey SWs is a powerhouse of an IP. But if Solo is also mixed, well, that could indeed affect the future of the franchise. But I do have faith in JJ Abrams. Yeah, LF screwed up by not planning this ST well, but if they put a ton of thought into Episode Nine, they could make something work.

Maybe, not as well as what I and perhaps you wanted, but still much like a three-course meal, the desert is the most memorable aspect of a meal.

TLJ's currently tracking with estimates toward a 2.8-2.9 multiplier in the end which is not good for a blockbuster with a December release. Rogue One was 3.43. The Force Awakens was 3.78.

Jumanji 2 has been out in less time and currently with estimates has a multiplier of 4.67 and it's only going to get bigger.

Strong word of mouth for Jumanji 2, not as strong word of mouth as those three other movies for TLJ.

    I agree.

On a side note: And I'm also sick of the damn rating war here. All because of over hating a movie. I can't say anything positive I get constant negative ratings. Can't have one civil conversation with anyone. Here comes the bad ratings.

This use to be a great place to talk about Star Wars...before the dark times...before The Last Jedi.

And on another side note...TLJ crossed 1 billion

Rest assured it's accurate. People are just trying to reinforce some lame narrative so they'll feel better about hating the film. That's why @MagnarTheGreat rated my post above at "trolling." It's amazing watching some of these people melt down.
