    New humorous plot twist - the Knights of Ren were created by a surviving Mace Windu in hopes of stopping the Sith/creating a "darker and edgier" version of Jedi.

    Just found this online. It was from Wookieepedia as part of Legends but may not be soon. Especially the part about unstable synthetic lightsaber crystals. I think Kylo found one to power his lightsaber somehow and now it is unstable.

The blades generated by unstable crystals were obviously more unstable than the norm, causing the blades generated to crackle with energy at erratic intervals, sometimes causing sparks to fly or streaks of electrical energy to run along the length. Due to the energy sparking from the blade, unstable synth-crystals caused more damage than normal when they hit enemies.     Looks like the weapons have some sort of energy source as others here have mentioned. Using a synthetic crystal to make different types of weapons seems cool.

    I just love this whole Knights of Ren. Now this is just an amazing concept from J.J. I am just so impressed with this concept. The Ren is something so refreshing it reminds me of some of the Star Wars novels. Hey, who said the EU isn't canon
    .....this has an EU feel and takes an outside the box jump in SW

    The Lost 20 always intrigued me. Obviously they had issues with the Jedi Order as it existed. Who is to say that a small contingent did not found a competing philosophy based upon the Ren or by a ex-Jedi named Ren. A great way to connect with the PT and such fertile territory to explore. After all, the Sith arose from the ranks of the Jedi before. Luke may have to examine and deal with this once more. History often repeats itself and the Knights of Ren may well be more dangerous in the end.
