Indie Revolver released this concept for Maz over the weekend -
    [IMG]
Indie Revolver's source says this comes from the scene where Maz shares a vision with Rey and Finn and Han.

I honestly don't know what I'm looking at here. But my first reaction was - is that a Kyber Crystal...?

I'm not a fan of Kyber Crystals being included in the movies. Leave em to the EU I say. But that sure does look like one to me. Could this be this the reason why Luke's lightsaber is being sought after? Is the crystal in it somehow important? Or is this something else?

Maybe Maz Kanata is the only one in the galaxy who can fix an old and broken lightsaber ?

Maybe she puts it into Rey's staff which then activates the lightsaber function? After all, it is Plagueis' saber staff! ;)

I get the impression from the picture that crystal is more relevant than the saber itself. If that is a Kyber Crystal, what is she doing with it and why is it important?

I love this concept art. Maz Kanata is wearing like a jedi, and she looks wise. Probably she is fixing or reparing Luke's lightsaber (blue crystal).

That's probably not far from the truth. Remember learning how to construct a light saber essentially completes your training as a Jedi, it requires great power.

Being able to remove the crystal from one to look at it and then replace it is a very rare skill indeed. It provides the answer to a vital question to: Why does Han go to Maz for help and not Leia?

It's not just the "estrangement", it's the fact Maz might be one of the last few openly force-sensitives in the galaxy these days. Practicing the Force openly in this era might even be considered dangerous, it works well with the Force=Luke=Hope theme they might be concocting.

Just ten cent speculation on a nickel's worth of data.

Still feeling a lot of Dark Crystal influence on TFA. Kira/Rey, Jen/Finn, even BB-8 being a round cute thing like Fizzgig.

Those of you who are up on your Joseph Campbell probably recognize the relevance of this scene and how it plays into a Hero's Journey/Monomyth.

This is pretty much what Cambell would call a "Meeting with the Goddess." She can be a Goddess, other times an Oracle, or even a Princess. Some times that's the hero's love interest, and theirs is a sacred union. Union here can mean a lot of things, but the important thing here is that they symbolize different halves of one thing. Their union makes them complete. They're always a powerful woman from who the hero gains support, knowledge, or union.

In the original trillogy, it was when Luke meets Leia on the Death Star. In the prequels, when Anakin first meets Amidala. Lord of the Rings had Frodo and Galadriel. Interestingly enough The Matrix had two scenes Neo and Trinity along with Neo and the Oracle.

The Goddess is an interesting figure as she is the one who teaches the hero about the true nature of the world and is often the one who shows the path to what they ultimately seek. The Goddess gives our hero the hero's quest. Maz gives Rey her hero's quest. Rey and the lightsaber. And the unity here, is symbolic, union with the sword. Two opposites one is female Rey, and the other symbolizes masculinity the sword or in this is case the lightsaber. Thus taking up the lightsaber is the union of opposites.

I really like this picture. It's so moody and atmospheric. And I like the idea of the crystal being more important the light saber. It brings a neat dynamic to the whole idea that (at least I) hadn't considered before.

It makes it less about sentimentality for the weapon and more about a potential practical use.

This concept art suggests that information is stored in the crystal. I really hope it's not. I don't view the Force as having the ability to store information, nor do I view that ability in rock.

I feel like there is a more logical explanation. Maybe it is a key to something more important. But hey, it is Star Wars right?

I like the idea that it's some kind of damned magical talisman. Totally admit to having to re-look up that word to make sure that I knew what I was sort of talking about. I'm glad I did, though!

Magical objects with magical properties. Either magical on their own or charged with magic by some magical person (in this case, both).

Also according to Wikipedia, where absolute internet truth lives, "According to the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, a magical order active in the United Kingdom during the late-19th and early-20th centuries, a talisman is "a magical figure [meaning object here] charged with the force which it is intended to represent. In the construction of a talisman, care should be taken to make it, as far as possible, so to represent the universal forces that it should be in exact harmony with those you wish to attract, and the more exact the symbolism, the easier it is to attract the force."

Obviously they don't mean the FORCE force, but the point being that the crystals are magic things that Jedi can do magic sh*t with. Maz Katan can use that crystal to magically expedite the plot AND be super cool doing it!

God I hope she fights in this.

The kyber memory crystal stored the names of all the future Jedi. It would go with the awakening theme if folks were trying to find that treasure trove of info.

I don't think it looks like that at all. The alien giving the saber to Leia seemed to have much bigger eyes.

Kyber crystals are already Star Wars cannon. They appear in Star Wars Rebels. I don't think this one being blue is a coincidence. If a scene based on this art makes it into movie then it's most assuredly Anakin's crystal and most likely she is repairing the saber before handing it over to Leia as seen in the trailer.

The crystal isn't the only thing on the table. Looks like there's other parts and gear there as well.
