SPOILER Kyber Crystals in TFA...?

Ah, ok. Well, in that case... yeah. That seems to be the result of that concept art.

I don't know about the old EU. My take is that it comes from the fact that there is some code, or other sort of info, contained within the lightsaber ala MSW speculation. I don't think anyone knows what that means, or in what form that could take at this point.

 

Kyber crystals are Star Wars cannon but perhaps all of the forms they take in the EU are not. Ezra claims his crystal in Star Wars Rebels which is solid cannon. What we do know is they are the heart of the saber and share some sort of connection with the force. The crystal a Jedi chooses is not a coincidence, they are guided by the force and only a powerful Jedi can assemble a saber. Or at least a Jedi that has a strong connection to the force. Only a force user can construct a saber. Yoda tests Ezra on Lothal and deems him worthy of the crystal.

 

I have wondered if crystals play an important role in this movie. I know they can be powerful -- large ones were used to build the Death Star (still canon?) -- so maybe the First Order is hunting them down to weaponize them?

I don't think it's a coincidence that 'Rebels' has integrated them into a couple of their storylines. When Hera and Kanan destroyed a ship carrying crystals, the resulting wave of destruction was enormous.

And there is one quick shot in the second teaser for TFA that maybe...just maybe...has a kyber crystal in it. It's too big to be a lightsaber crystal, but it looks crystalline to me. Maybe. Possibly. Potentially.

Anyway, I won't be surprised if crystals play a role.

 

So a crystal would just randomly show up in Rey's kitchen? That's the reason why everyone is going after her? Yeah right.

 

She lives on a planet filled with rotting Imperial starships. Who knows what cargo they were carrying. And she is a scavenger. It's not completely inconceivable that she came across a crystal.

Though I do tend to believe the rumors that it's actually Luke's old lightsaber that everyone's after. How that ends up on Jakku is anyone's guess.

Maybe Luke put a message in the Kyber Crystal like Leia put a message in R2. Only difference being it's a force vision message. One that Maz will decode for Rey just like Obiwan decoded for Luke. Also the light saber being handed to Leia might be after the crystal was removed and the message was revealed. Maybe they are giving Leia an empty saber or one with a different crystal inside. Maybe Leia can't know what Luke is up to.

Maz Kanata can read crystals like a witch can read a crystal ball. She can "scry".

 

Is it a coincidence that a book is being released in September called 'The Weapon of a Jedi'? Probably not. I think we'll get a much better understanding of just what these crystals are capable of in the coming months. The book synopsis says: "Hidden in the story are also clues and hints about the upcoming film Star Wars: The Force Awakens."

I also don't think it's a coincidence that this book is set between ANH and ESB, when Luke is in possession of the lightsaber that goes missing.

 

Totally not a coincidence. I love the idea of there being more to a light sabers crystal than just being a laser sword.

Actually, my guess would be that Maz is more the Helper who grants info to spurr the hero onwards. IMHO.

The Indie Revolver picture carries a medieval alchemist wibe for me, with her oriental clothes, wizzened looks, darkened room, pouring over a mystical item with selection of weird instrumnets. It would be cool if Maz turns out to be some sort of non-Jedi sage/alchemist/mystic

 

It's been a rumor for a long time that the Saber holds information or is a key to a map, and somehow helps our heroes find Luke.
