Oh man that was funny. Looks like a pile of napkins to me. I don't get how anyone would get kyber crystal from that.

I know about those rumors. I just never heard anything pertaining to the crystal itself containing a message. I don't get how that would even work.

You all are aware Kyber crystals are already a part of canon, correct? There seems to be a few people here who seem to think we know nothing about them in canon.

I'm aware. I'm also aware that Darth Maul surviving TPM and growing cybernetic spider legs is also unfortunately canon. Making the jump from cartoon to the movie is bold move. Just be cause it's technically canon doesn't mean its a good idea. The majority of casual star wars fans don't watch the cartoons or read the books. To them canon is movies only. So from that stand point Kyber Crystals showing up in TFA could be controversial.

Spider-Maul was brilliant. but yeah, 95% of the people who pay for a Star Wars movie tickets will have never read a book.

It's true, and remember that Jedi padawans learn how to assemble sabers with the use of the force to guide the crystaly into place, as misaligned crystals are volotile and dangerously explosive in sabers when installed incorrectly...that's why it takes someone specifically and purposely trained in the ways of the force to assemble a lightsaber. I say Maz potentially has had that training judging by the picture and what she's doing at that moment. My two cents.

There's a poster around these parts named King3000 who has proven an excellent source of insider information. In one of his posts he mentions that "stones" appear to be used as currency in this movie and that there are a lot of scales being used to measure them. This photo could give credence to his claims...

    sm.jpg

What "stone" in the Star Wars universe has been more important than the kyber crystal? I know a lot of people say that shot from the second teaser could be anything. But I don't think it could be anything. It has a lot of crystalline properties: it's opaque, it glistens in the sunlight, and it's splintered on the left. And this shot was chosen for the teaser for a reason. Whatever's in Rey's hand is important. At least it looks that way to me.

Judging by the concept art for TFA and recent canon materials, kyber crystals are important to the Lucasfilm story group. I think we see them in this movie.

Lucasfilm thinks they're important. Maz Kanata thinks they're important. And yet I could care less. I hope this films proves me otherwise.

Kyber crystals are canon via not only Rebels, but also the Clone Wars. Yes, they're both cartoons that the average SW fan has likely not seen. Everything is supposed to be tied together as canon now. That being said, they're going to make the movies in a way that the other canon media only enriches the movie going experience (that's what the Story Group is for.) Still, it's important that casual moviegoers aren't lost. I feel like explaining a kyber crystal onscreen would take very little time, then voila! ... both hardcore and casual fans are appraised and happy. :)

Crystals are awesome! They have been a key into the supernatural realms of lots of different mythologies.

The crystals (no matter what name they go by) have been part of Star Wars since the very beginning. I'm almost positive I remember seeing this picture when I was a kid in the early '80's. There's absolutely nothing new, or EU, about their existence.

That concept art makes it look as though the crystal will be important. If that's the case, it'll most likely be for a reason introduced in the movie, and have nothing to do with what we learned about them in TCW and Rebels.

This is getting into semantics, but I'd say info on kyber crystals in the film would supplement what we already know about kyber crystals.

Definitely don't disagree. But even if it does, it'll still be new info. That's my guess, at least.

I think that Maz may have a Force ability similar to Vos and be able to glean info from the crystal, just by touching it. If that's the case, then a lengthy explanation on kyber crystals wouldn't be needed.

I don't know anything about Quinlan Vos, but I think you're exactly right.

I don't know if you're into the books, but I'd recommend reading Dark Disciple if so. Or ...

It's significance is most definitely mythological, in that it's an item that symbolizes the unknown and unseen Force. It really doesn't have to go any further than that.

Still, I believe that the importance of that scene lies in the fact that it represents the stage in the Hero's Journey known as "Meeting with the Goddess." Maz is clearly an Oracle, and the whole point of the scene is to show Rey the nature of what her quest will be. That her Hero's Journey is about the lightsaber. Part of it is getting it to Luke, but the deeper meaning is that she's going have to pick it up and become a Jedi.
