@DFF and @Count dooku you both get alot of bad ratings recently. (is there a secret competition who gets the most?)
I don't share your opinions, but you both have the right to speak out, I respect that. (FREE SPEECH FOLKS!)
My friendly advice @DFF I would not open a thread with this topic to stir up trouble on purpose.

I agree that the headline of the article is offensive, but when I actually read the article I felt it was rather obvious that the author has essentially expressed his concern that the standards in Hollywood are continuing to get lower and feels TFA rather contributes to this problem than solve it.

I was in a good mood and left the theater angry four times TFA isn't a good movie.

I don't know who's dumber... The LA Times or the bimbo on MSNBC who thinks Darth Vader is racist because he's black.
Guess I'll roll a chance cube on this one.

That's why I mentioned overwhelming positive reviews as well. There are always movies that make more money than they have any right to. lol

The Matrix sequels come to mind. They are pretty terrible, but I still saw both in the theater, bought the trilogy on DVD, video games, etc.

Never was I under the impression that they were anywhere near as good as the original, or maybe not as good as watching paint dry, but they got my money anyway.

Heck, I will still find myself watching them to this day if I'm bored and channel surfing, maybe I keep secretly hoping the film makers will pull a Lucas and redo them all, but actually vastly improve them.

True; though I think at best we can only truly say that they were culturally popular.
An objective reading of "good" or "bad" for a film is almost impossible outside of measuring the technical accomplishments within the film itself (e.g. was the camera shot done well, the blocking, the boom mic stayed out of the way, the palette wasn't asymmetrical, lighting was good or appropriate, etc...).

Beyond that; I think it's hard to actually say that any film was definitively good or bad and that folks who differ from that label are somehow in error.

Citizen Kane (really Jayson? Really? You misspelled a movie title you've seen almost a hundred times?? Good lord); I friggen hate that bloody movie. It sucks.
Yet; it was extremely popular for its time and made a ton of money, and it's technical shots are properly accomplished without really much in the way of error.
What changed is culture and time - I'm not the audience who enjoys that movie's style and form of story telling. It just doesn't work for me (even though I still watch it now and then to study the camera advances that it accomplished).

Sure is a lot of people seeing and then re-seeing the so called stink film.

*yawn* with this entire bash thread.

    the film is amazing........

always critics though as there are people that thought Citizen Kane stunk also. However, though not in the league of a Kane film.....this to me is 2nd best of the saga as it's got it all.

With all due respect to everyone here on the Cantina, can't we all talk about the movies without resorting to bashing, negative quoting and name calling? Come on people we are not babys here! When I first joined the cantina I liked the quote sistem cause there seemed to be some sort of control but now I really hate the darn sistem as people have been abusing it nonstop to bash one another! I wish the moderators did something about this cause it is really getting out of hand. Why can't we respect what others say without trying to humiliate the other or force our opinions on them? Why slap a person with a darn trolling quote just because he/she says they don't like Boba Fett or that they think Hammerhead looked cooler than Greedo? I loved the PT and I disliked TFA and I haven't slapped anybody with a dumb negative quote or insulted said person just because he/she disagrees with me. Heck, to this day I have had many conversations with people who have disagreed with me and even if they have resorted to giving me negative quotes I have never given one back or given one to anyone for that matter. Can the insults people and respect others opinions. I have seen so many people say they hate the PT and that is fine by me as I greatly enjoy it but can't someone post that he/she didn't like TFA without getting swarmed with negative quotes and insults? You are a wise and insightful person if you think the PT sucked but suddenly you are a brainless moron if you disliked TFA? Come on! How many of us would just like to erase the SW Holiday Special from our minds and yet there are some fans who have great childhood memories regarding it and like it alot and does that mean said person is a mindless troll? Do fans instantly become mindless idiots with no taste just because they say they like the Ewok movies? Why slap a disagree or a dislike quote without any reason of why you disagree or dislike said post? Why slap someone with a trolling quote when said person has only made one single comment in the whole conversation? Sometimes I see people arguing over something in one post and sinse they disagreed with said person in that post, when that person writes on a totally different post they just bash his opinions cause they carried the anger over from the first post! I have even seen some people calling out to others as they just wait to flame him/her! This is really ruining the experience here in the Cantina as the point of being here is talking about our likes and dislikes of everything SW and not by flamming others just because they are not mindless drones who go with the flow and like what everyone says they like and hate everything that everyone says they hate. This is Star Wars guys and not the Borg collective!

I mostly agree with you, but I also believe that there are no real rules to film making. I can make a film that purposely breaks or ignores any and all of those rules for some effect I want to convey to the audience. That's what I think is most important in judging a film. "What is it trying to do?" "Does it do it?" "Does it engage the audience while doing it?"

Also, the films we're talking about are meant to be shared with certain audiences and enjoyed by them on some level. It's impossible to not have the reaction of that audience mean something in regards to whether the film was good or bad. Our individual opinions create data points through ticket sales, imdb, rotten tomato reviews (And a ton of other things that Hollywood probably looks at) that can be combined to form a "meta-opinion" if you will.

I agree. In my review of TFA; it is "good" in label beyond just my taste because it succeeds at doing exactly what it was that was of design and connected with a wide audience base.

The plagiarism aspect is probably my main gripe with this film.

Other episodes used recycled themes and elements, but there was never an episode like TFA which was essentially a carbon carbon of another movie.

The degree to which this cheapened the experience can't be overstated, and there's just no excuse for it whatsoever.

JJ had an entire universe to sift through, with literally endless, badass story-lines that could've been explored.

But nooo, he had to do a soft reboot of ANH. He took the easy way out, and fans go shortchanged in the process.

Funny how this was rated as "trolling". GROW UP people. Not everyone liked TFA. I also think it's strange that so many die hard fans are ignoring the obvious flaws. Take those blinders off. YES there were good parts but overall it was seriously flawed.

I believe most people who like the movie couldn't care less that not everybody on the planet likes TFA. You're missing the point. Reading endless posts saying "Me and my friends and some other guy didn't like the movie" is not interesting, it's not worth replying to. And this particular guy is trolling, believe me. Now regarding your statement "it was seriously flawed" - no I don't believe it was. I disagree. It's definately less flawed than most films in the saga. Now, what do you want to discuss?

Really? ROTJ had a massive amount of flack thrown at it for exactly that reason back when it came out.
People labeled it a cop-out and said it was just a copy of ANH pretty regularly.
They even made the same complaint about "another Death Star".

That said; I dunno, I know to you it doesn't work, but I don't see this as a carbon copy of anything anymore than I see ROTJ, or any of the Prequels as carbon copies.
I mean; I can literally sit down and hit play on the prequels and match them scene for scene, shot for shot, with the OT (and several people have).

In no specific order; here's just a run of copies...these copies happen in the same relative act and scene marking point of the films as each other:

    Red is my edit.
We shouldn't forget that one of the original writers also specifically wanted this film to be exactly this way and said so even before the movie was released.

There is a difference between enjoying a movie and proclaiming its the greatest movie ever. I for one acknowledge many flaws in the movie, but I still really enjoyed it. How hard is it for you guys to understand?

I have no problem with anyone who dislikes the movie as you have every right to express your opinion here. What does bother me is someone telling me or anyone who enjoyed the film were wrong or we have blinders on.

I actually find it strange that someone would try to change someone's opinion about a movie? I know friends who loved Jurassic World and I thought it was a terrible movie, but I would never question their opinion?

I can only say I don't think TFA compares to the OT, but I still enjoyed and has sort of gotten me to forget about the PT years. You don't like it, I liked it.

    Let's move on....... :)

Has anyone watched wrestling and eventually the bad guy becomes the good guy and vice versa? Re read this thread.

Like I've said before myself, DFF, and others have been posting on star wars boards for over 10 years. We ALL LOVE star wars. Nobody here is a fly by night troll just to get an arousal out of anyone. We are here to talk about our views and opinion.

Lastly re read the title to thread, that DFF created to discuss. Which side is trolling here? Ask yourself that question. Instead of staying on TOPIC about what the film lacks people have came in here and BASHED peoples views that agree with the TOPIC!

People are trolling the thread, that much is clear.

I haven't come here to bash anyone.
I came here to discuss the topic; a review which states that it is time that I admit that TFA is bad.
    I disagree.
I have yet to require bashing anyone.
