We may get around to discussing the movie once we move past the "my opinion is fact" stage.
Concidering the tone of voice in which the members who enjoyed the movie have been adressed here, its downright unfair to describe our calling out that falacy as "bashing".
For how long is someone allowed to simply ignore the things people say and jump points before the obvious unwillingness to have a dialogue verges on trolling?

Me skimming through this utter blast trolling thread:

Business Columnist thinks film that is fastest ever to one billion is bad.

Seems he needs to be educated in a bit more business.

End of story, end of thread. Lock this mother down.

A popular high-earning film does not automatically equate as a "good film" (Jurassic World and Titanic for examples). Its good for the accountants, but It merely means lots of people have successfully been persuaded to buy tickets to see it, regardless of its quality. ;)

Think this thread is a good place to raise a question about our internet sociability.

First off, Everyone has the right to their own opinion on any given matter
second, Nobody has the right to offend, assault or abuse any other person with their acts or words
Third, No one should impose or force their thoughts over other person's thoughts EVER

    Therefore i ask,
Why the need to criticize and hurt people that don't think the same as you?
Why do some people feel the urge to hurt and bash others just to make their way sound better?
Why the absolute desire to make everyone else agreed with everything they think or say?
Why so many people show "Delusions of Grandeur"? Who come every lazy sod thinks he's the next Socrates or Plato and the world should stop to listen whatever comes out of their pitty normal brains? And they feel in the right to make all of us follow their toughts?
Why the ratings and the need for approval? I don't rate people on the street how they dress up or eat (this one is a friendly but the other is a Dislike).

Honestely i dislike both the Haters and the Lovers, i'm not a "Likeaholic", in my post all over the internet i will never:
    - Offend or insult anyone
    - Search for others approval or recognition of my grandness
    - Try to forcemind others into my ideas
    - Do a search for thanks for likes

And if i don't feel right with one thing i'll just go away and spend my time on something else.

Honestly, I think the best thing to do would be for the mods to make a General Thread 'Did you like or dislike TFA?' That way people can debate the movie as a whole and whether they think it is good or not.

All other threads should be individual topics pertaining to certain aspects of the movie (plot points, characters, special effects), and people discuss the pro's and cons. This way you won't have a million threads 'TFA sucks' or 'LA Times says TFA is crap', etc, as the mods can just lock those threads.

I don't want the bashers to feel that they can't express their opinions here, as this is what happened at TFN. I was once a PT basher and most of us were run off TFN because of it, and I don't think the mods should control what the prevailing opinions should be. But being a TFA gusher now, none of us want everything to be how the movie stinks, because its gets repetitive. That way with one major thread to argue about the movie as a whole, the rest of the threads can be specific topics to discuss on their own.

Does that sound fair to both sides? If so, we can propose this to the mods.

I agree it's exaggerated and got out of hand.
You spent alot of money for a movie you don't enjoyed.
Respect, you tried really hard to like it.
The Darth Vader racist remark is hilarious.
This is this not a hasty assessment?
There is no denying that it's a one-to-one remake.
I agree, it's something they never done before.
J.J. and Kasdan had not enough time left to pull something different off. (Arndt script was not finished either)
Maybe they did the best they could. (I guess Disney did a lot of pressure on both guys, Disney has a strict release schedule)
I share the opinion. (considering the short period of time J.J. and Kasdan had to pull off/to craft this movie)
Because many of us behave like annoyed childrens.

So, domestically it may finish #8 all-time adjusted for inflation at the box office at 922million in front of a little film called The Exorcist.

sure seems like this film stinks.....lol

people are seeing this film up with greatest all-time film.

I respect your opinion Biff, but when people start to considering TFA as the greatest movie ever made, it's getting ridiculous.
Example: my favourite movie of all time is "The good the Bad and the Ugly" - my humble opinion is that : "TFA can't hold a candle to this masterpiece"
Getting records broken and earning alot of money has nothing to do being a great or superior movie.
The hype train/advertisement campaign and the fans starving for a new Star Wars movie play a very big role in this.
I don't say it's a bad thing, it's like it is. (a decent movie earning a crazy amount of money)
I guess it's Disney's best holiday season since...the release of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs in 1937.
Sometimes the truth must be told, if I get dislikes for sharing a honest and realistic point of view so be it. :D

Whilst yes, stuff such as Transformers does show that sales does not equal quality, it doesn't mean everything that makes big money is no good.

The top 20 highest grossing films adjusted for inflation includes all of the OT, Jaws, E.T., Doctor Zhivago, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Ben-Hur, Jurassic Park and Snow White amongst others.

And whilst you may not like some of those, you can't deny their place in film history as well as the general consensus around said films.

This list shows the top 200 adjusted for inflation - and look at the quality of film in it: http://www.boxofficemojo.com/alltime/adjusted.htm

Moral of the story: Don't trust money. Either to support an argument or destroy one. That goes for both fans of TFA and haters of it too.

No one ever said TFA was a masterpiece. All I am saying is that it has a chance to be #8 All time adjusted . If people thought it stunk it wouldn't be in the conversation.

In case anyone was wondering, TFA is currently the 43rd highest grossing when adjusted.

It'll absolutely be in the Top 20 by the time it finishes running in cinemas. (Which is a slight shame as it will knock Raiders of the Lost Ark out of the Top 20 as a result)

I think this is a very good idea, and will take it up with the rest of the staff.

I was, as some of you may or may not be aware, one of the regulars who was run off of TF.N about 10 years ago (along with Jedi77-83 and a few other Cantina denizens) for being a "basher". To put this in context, the TF.N mods at the time had chosen not only to self-indulgently micromanage everyone's forum posts, but also to warn or ban posters for expressing even the mildest criticism of the PT films. It got to the point where participation in much of the TF.N forum was nigh-on impossible unless one was content to simply praise whatever element of the PT was under discussion.

This is NOT the kind of atmosphere we on the staff want here in the Cantina. Not by a long shot. Personally, I really liked TFA and as of now I am able to fairly easily overlook the movie's flaws (and of course it has them.) Plenty of you didn't like TFA, and that's perfectly okay too (and as somebody who felt that the PT was far more wasted opportunity than anything, I absolutely sympathize with you and understand where you're coming from.) There is room for respectful expression of and discussion about the full range of opinions about TFA and Star Wars in general.

That said, we also want to keep the Cantina manageable and easy to navigate. This is where I agree that we probably want to merge threads like this with a broader common thread, whether it's "Did you like or dislike TFA?" "Media reviews of TFA" or whatever it is.

Please understand that I'm not making a final call on this. It's something that the Cantina staff needs to discuss as a whole, and not something that I can unilaterally do. But it IS a very good idea.

You can't use the money argument avatar is the highest grossing film and that movie is terrible. This movie was going to break records regardless it's the first star wars movie in 10 years.
