I think it depends. It seems that EVERY time there are no Jedi, somehow the "Force Awakens" and chooses hero's to fight the evil in the galaxy. Maybe the will of the force isn't to have guardians with super powers. Maybe that power corrupts someone EVERY TIME, leading to even further disaster. Maybe only certain people chosen by the force are able to bring balance. Maybe Rey is that person and she is all the Jedi we need for now.

But with or without the Jedi there will be powerful beings using the Force. And without the Jedi, some of these people will fall to the Dark Side. There will always be people seeking to rule the galaxy and in doing so, will disrupt the balance of the Force. It's not favourable for the Force to constantly go in and out of balance. It's best for balance to be maintained. And only the Jedi can ensure that state of harmony. Why? Because only the Jedi follow the will of the Force with a total selfless and compassionate agenda. This would be the case whether there were one or many thousands of Jedi. And in terms of there just being one - well, we can see the danger in this. What if this one person falls to the Dark Side or is killed? The ways of the Jedi are lost and the one group willing and able to repel evil will be no more thus we'd enter into a potential very long period of imbalance.

There could be something to be said for tempering ones power and perhaps not placing power over wisdom which the PT Jedi did. But that has been learned. And even if there are more lessons to be learned, if there are new ways to act - they'd still be Jedi so long as they act selflessly, with compassion and reject the Dark Side in all its forms.

Do you think there is time to find, introduce, and see Luke teach new Jedi in this trilogy? I see the need for new Jedi and hope we at least get a handful, but I'm not optimistic.

I really feel like TFA messed things up by not explaining and showing the Republic and the dysfunction presumably that led to the First Order's rise and the destruction of Luke's Jedi. I want to know how Luke fit into the larger conflict. It doesn't feel like those questions get answered.

It feels like the only new Jedi we are getting is Rey and her helping to defeat the First Order. Echo's of the OT, where the only new Jedi we got was Luke helping to defeat the Empire.

Side note, I still think Kylo turns on Snoke at some point. But to take control of the First Order.

I agree. Though I hope that IX goes in a very different direction and there are room for other Jedi characters to emerge. We'll see. But sure, I'd never have gone in the rehash direction of FO/Empire vs Resistance/Rebels. Very difficult to change direction now from retelling what we saw in the previous trilogy.

But as long as Rey becomes a Jedi and there is the suggestion of a new order to come after her, that's ok.

This is why I think they need a HUGE time jump somewhere in TLJ. Starting this movie where TFA left off makes this trilogy even smaller than than the OT. Imagine if ESB was about what happened right after ANH. Rebels evacuating Yavin, etc. Also, the reign of Snoke and Kylo will be very short lived if we stick to this timeline. I'm confident Rey will become what the new Jedi should be. If we ever get them on screen is another story.

I think there will be a time jump when Luke agrees to train Rey. That'll take place over several months (they won't want to create the same hard to justify timeline as in TESB).

I envision a gray jedi exactly the way it was described in the Darth Bane trilogy and i don't even know if that's cannon , i don't remember his name , but the ideea was that the only thing he cared about was him , his powers were a meaning to protect his life and procuring the tools for an easy and carefree life, doesn't care for the galaxy , and when he is captured by the Darth Bane's aprentice he is in a position similar to Luke's : we can destroy Darth Bane and rule the galaxy togheter , hes take is something like : meh, looks like a lot of efort, who wants to rule the galaxy ? sounds boring...
Of corse it will not be the same case with Luke ( i hope ) , but thats how i see a gray jedi .

So he's selfish and lazy? I see nothing in that persons attitude that warrants him to have the title 'Jedi' in any part of his characters description.

Well, a person like that clearly isn't a Jedi or in the Jedi Order. That person is on the dark path and will eventually fall. The reason Rey was so quickly able to discover her powers was due to being firmly in the light. If you look at her actions, she's super honest, selfless, and innocent to an extent. The perfect vessel to be chosen by the force because she has no attachements and no jealously in her heart. All she wants is family.

In order to wield the power of the force, you need to be in the light and stay in the light, or in the light then fall. I don't think even people like Palpatine discover their powers as dark side users. I feel like that comes later.

Hmm, not so sure about that. A young Palpatine or Maul likely discovered the Force through their evil masters showing how to connect to it through the Dark Side. And it seems Ben Solo was born under a cloud of darkness. Strikes me that everyone is connected to the Force (some more than others) and can access it (through training) however they want - be it through their anger or compassion. I don't think you have to start off in the light. Essentially, most would start off in the middle and then move towards the ways of the Sith or Jedi.

    Sith <------------Conflicted------------> Jedi

Hes called Set and ( of course ) is not in the Jedi order anymore , and he is called - in the book - a dark jedi ; anyway i think his description stands , he's no longer a jedi ( a true one ) ,but he is not clouded by the dark side ( not much at least ) , cause he doesn't crave after things like grandeur, power, dominance , as usually asociated with the dark side users.

If thats the case, it shouldn't be. Its like saying someone is born evil. Typically evil and the power to do evil come from fear, anger, selfishness, etc. Palpatine wasn't born evil, he learned to do evil. If being force sensitive is something you are born with, then Palpatine had that power early on. I'm sure that power was sensed and then he was corrupted. So far, we've seen an awful lot of folks that have fallen to the dark side, not began there. Why do you think the Jedi wanted small innocent children? Once they get too old, the chances of turning quickly become greater.

    Examples:

Anakin - started in light - fell to dark.
Luke - started in light - tempted by dark.
Dooku - started in light - fell to dark.
    Maul - Unknown
    Palpatine - Unknown
Ben/Kylo - started in light - conflicted early by Snoke's influence
Obi-Wan - started in light, stayed in light.
Yoda - started in light, stayed in light.

I don't believe in the middle. Children don't start in the middle and you are essentially born with the force. To STAY in the light takes discipline which is what the Jedi order is all about.

That's why he isn't canon. That would go against Lucas established principles for Jedi and force users.

I believe Yoda's quote, "Do or Do not, there is no try" illustrates how the Jedi don't believe there is a middle.

Oh I am not saying they were born evil. Just that when they accessed the Force properly for the first time, it wasn't a given that they did so from a position of light.

My point was that it's likely that the majority of those who accessed the Force, started off neutral. It takes time to be a fully compassionate being. Likewise, it takes time to be consumed by greed. Now I agree to the extent that when you access the Force, you do so through either the light or the dark - not the middle. But what I was really referring to was how to become a master of light or dark you start off nearer the middle and move to either side. For a Jedi like Luke, he had dark side issues he needed to get over and reject. And so he was moving in that direction. Kylo Ren, as I see it, has for some time been stuck somewhere close to the middle. Utterly conflicted. The Solo in him still exists and brings with it compassion. At the same time his greed is keeping him mostly in the dark. And because of this he is a master of neither - utterly conflicted and all the more weaker for it.

And so for me, a force user starting off will access the Force through light or dark and then on their journey will eventually become a master of whichever side they have chosen. But if they don't make that choice and keep hold of both their compassion and greed then they won't go anywhere - they'll stay in the middle, conflicted - that is until their greed or compassion wins out.

that's a bit of a non-sequitur. What I am saying is that those who don't overcome greed or fully embrace compassion, will be conflicted. Being a Jedi is a hard life and requires great discipline.

Seems apathetic and if pressed sounds like he would do whatever it takes. Which describes many murderers.

Yoda points out that the Dark Side is faster, easier and more seductive.

I would imagine that if you can pod race well unknowingly through the force you could have evil motives and have actions that tap into the Dark Side.

My point was that there are no examples in canon that show a force user discovering the dark side before the light. It's really unlikely since you would have displayed some power at a young age (like little Ani), even unknowingly. Tapping into the dark side would come later as your intentions and morality become less selfless and innocent.

Doesn't this assume that we know precisely what motive energies an action.
