We now know Luke gets this compass from a classified observatory of the Emperor's via Battlefront. This is the only thing Luke takes from this observatory. It was ordered to be destroyed by the emperor upon his death because there were artifacts in here that he worried the rebellion could use against the empire. This is the only thing Luke thought was important.

Luke has this compass in TLJ, so what is the importance of this compass??

To go straight to answering your question, I think it’s the most obvious answer: he used the compass to locate the first Jedi Temple (which we believe he has found on Ahch-To by TFA).

Other options would seem...vague, I guess? He accidentally followed the compass and awoke Snoke in the Unknown Regions (but then why wouldn’t Palpatine have used this to do the same thing)? He identified some place extremely strong in the Force (i.e. Ahch-To or a nexus of the Force)?

I’m not quite sure, but I think that it will be more relevant to flash/Forcebacks than to “present day”.

The map to Luke/Ahch-To was already a macguffin of sorts in TFA, so I’d hope that we didn’t find another macguffin to locate something else in TLJ.

Right. The most logical (maybe most obvious) is that it leads to the first jedi temple. Just seems like there must be something more to it if he still has it on him in TLJ according to toys and concept art or promotional images (whichever MSW had a look at).

Doesn't the force essentially equate to magic? haha come on now this is what star wars is.... I'm hoping that it has more importance than just "leads to the first Jedi Temple"... that seems too easy.

Magic Compass, the film, was produced by Warner Bros., not Disney.

Does it mention where this Observatory is located?

Interestingly enough, I am currently reading The Legends of Luke Skywalker and in one of the story's that I just now finished, he is on Jakku. He has rescued an Imperial gunner from his downed SD and they trek across the desert and come to an Imperial compound of sorts. There are other scavengers there looking for 'leftovers' to scavenge. Long story short, Luke rescues these scavengers from certain doom and as a token from them, he receives some items, including a compass found in a case labeled 'Pillio'.

I don't know what 'Pillio' means, but found it interesting nonetheless. Of course these stories in this book aren't entirely true but I saw your thread and thought I'd share what I just read about a compass.

A compass was kept by Emperor Palpatine in an observatory on the planet Pillio. During a mission he undertook to Pillio, the Jedi Knight Luke Skywalker found the compass whilst visiting the observatory and took it to keep rather than leave it behind to be destroyed by Del Meeko, who intended to destroy the observatory.

Probably should have put that in spoilers. I believe it was a compass to Ach-To or wherever he was training Jedi at. "People who knew him best think he went looking for the first Jedi temple."

I dont think it is a compass I think it is a holocron. A key to tap into the force.

It was during the Battle of Jakku or very shortly after. Which was approximately a yr after ROTJ. So he would've been around 24.

What I find interesting is about the compass. Maybe the one on Jakku was counterfeit and the case marked Pillio was a clue on the original's location?

Having it be a key to tap into the force is intriguing. Like this idea

I would like to see a return to Pillio in the actual movies. That planet looks LIT AS F***.

Building on from this, perhaps the compass itself is actually more of a clue towards the next compass, which will eventually lead Luke...somewhere of importance.

I mean, Palpatine has observatories on both Jakku and Pillio, and the fact that one is found in a case labelled “Pillio”, linking the two, seems a far stretch as a coincidence.

Whilst the novel itself is one about passed on stories, I think that there could be some truth to Luke following these to wherever they lead: I doubt that it’s a coincidence that of everything in the Pillio observatory that he was attracted to the compass, of all things.

Perhaps Palpatine left this trail to lead either one of his followers, or Luke, to what he believed to be hidden out in the Unknown Regions (i.e. the source of the Dark Side’s power, or Snoke?).

That would be a perfect trap to set up for Luke as a contingency in the event of his death, in my opinion. He must have known Luke would attempt to rebuild the Jedi if he succeeded in defeating Vader and the Emperor, so Palpatine set him up to come face to face with/awaken Snoke, perhaps?

I wonder if the blue marble "orb" is something similar to the orb Obi Wan had that projected a map for Yoda to see...
