Maybe Luke visits a galaxy far, far away and get a son called Jack and a daughter call Lyra.

But realy a compass. It would be cool if he had a holocron. If would fit perfect

My only problem with it being an actual holocron, as opposed to perhaps serving some sort of similar, Force-sensitives-only purposes, is that the Story Group seems to be making the point of going away from just straight-up having everything be a holocron.

For instance, Greg Rucka, who wrote Shattered Empire, suggested that they have Luke be after a holocron, to which the Story Group responded with something along the lines of “please not another holocron.” Pablo then suggested a Force tree, based on the one found in the Jedi Temple gardens in TCW, which was what we eventually got.

It could serve a similar purpose to a holocron (i.e. direct Luke towards something, guide him in some way) without actually being a holocron, at this point.

I've never really believed that Luke had gone to the FJT/Ahch-To to be in exile. He clearly has another agenda yet to be revealed, that likely plays a bigger role than we know. I also wonder whether Kylo is privy to this and the reason why he was so eager to get to Luke rather than just follow Snoke's orders of stopping the Resistance from finding him.

Okay, so I’ve speculated about how the compasses might have to do with Palpatine either planning to locate Snoke, or using it as a trail to lead Luke to Snoke (might explain why Luke and Ben were travelling so consistently: they were hunting down compasses, all over the galaxy, not just Jedi/Force relics).

But what if the compasses are actually to find something else, some place...much harder to locate?

Just wanted to throw it out there: what if Palpatine was trying to locate Mortis?

Rian has stated that Luke just isn't there to mope. There is a bigger purpose/reason for him being there. I think most of us would have loved to see that saber fly to Luke instead of Rey in the forest, but I'm hoping for something even bigger than that in TLJ. I think after seeing the movie most of us will be satisfied as to why Luke wasn't there to help his friends. I think this compass may come into play as to why he is there and wasn't out saving everyone's arse in TFA. perhaps it does have something to do with Snoke or the unknown regions. Loving all the ideas being thrown out here so far.

    These are interesting thoughts.

Here is the text about the compass. Spoken by the scavenger who gave it to him.

" I don't know what this is. A compass, maybe? Found it in a case labeled 'Pillio.' Who knows where it will lead? Maybe to a place where you won't ever be hungry or worry about starships falling from the shy...."

This is a stretch but could it be Ahch-To? Won't ever go hungry: Abundance of Porgs. And the war is not at Ahch-To, yet. So the time he was there before Rey showed up, he didn't have to worry about falling starships. Like I said, a stretch. :)

I super like that. Maybe the original case for it, and it was stolen by a scavenger of Jakku from the Emperor, but the emperor had already switched it forseeing the theft.

When I think of a compass I think of the north and south pole.
What if this is a compass to the fabled "source of the Dark Side" (meaning there is likely a source of the light side as well)?
I haven't a clue how the source of the dark side works and I hated the sound of it when I heard it in the Aftermath novel.
However, perhaps there is something to it? I'm wondering if it isn't a physical place but some kind of spiritual realm, like Mortis?
Perhaps Luke has actually already been there - perhaps he found it with Ben? Perhaps Snoke was in this realm and Luke released him? Perhaps this is why Kylo wants to find Luke so desperately - he wants the compass?
Could Luke discovering this place have any link to the Force being dormant for so long and Rey awakening it?

Anyway, that's all I have. Meditate on it and come back to me with your ideas, people!

Most of that’s already been suggested :p but absolutely, it seems to be the logical thread at this point.
From canon sources, it seems it was only the Cosmic Force that was dormant, not the Force in its entirety, and it only became dormant around the time Luke’s attempt at rebuilding the Jedi Order went down hill when Ben/Kylo betrayed him.

Likewise, though the effects of the Cosmic Force reawakening are most evident in Rey, canon sources point to the Cosmic Force being reawakened during Rey’s and Finn’s interactions on Jakku; it doesn’t seem that Rey herself was responsible for reawakening it, but rather that she seems to have become a conduit which personified the reawakening instead.

I like the thought of this somehow leading to Snoke. Directly or indirectly.
