So here we are coming up on Ep. VII, the Empire has all but fallen, the Death Star was destroyed (again), the Emperor is dead, Vader/Anakin was redeemed and passed into the force, and Luke is theoretically rebuilding the Jedi Order...and everyone he ever knew from his family (aside from Leia) is gone.

There comes a time in most peoples lives when they see the world's (or galaxy's) vast and rich history that has come before, and they'll look in the mirror and ask "Where did I come from?" I say this from experience as I spent several years researching my own genealogy in order to find that answer. I suppose that Luke, in his many years of meditation, wandering, and final solitude (that we're hearing about to come) may have had the same questions.

As we know, Anakin was apparently the product of Shmi Skywalker's immaculate conception by the Force, and nothing further is known of Shmi. Luke didn't know Padme', nor did he really know Anakin. In fact, the only real father figures he ever knew were Uncle Owen, and briefly, Ben.

The Jedi archives undoubtedly held the known, written accounts of Luke's ancestry and the events in time that took place before his and Leia's birth. After their birth, there was (presumably) nothing further entered into their "family file" in the archives as the archives fell into the possesion of Sidious and the Empire after Order 66.

So we speculate that over the last 30 years that Luke wandered the galaxy, looking for answers to his questions about the Force, the Jedi Order, and the history of the Sith, and how everything he knows has come to be. We know that at the end of ROTJ that Luke can see (or has at least seen) his father, Yoda, and Obi-wan as force ghosts, and we know (as we have seen) that he can communicate directly with Obi-wan. There is further speculation, based on the fact that Yoda mentioned it in ROTS (and spoke with him in TCW), that Qui-gon Jinn is also out there floating around being "force-ghosty" somewhere...so there may be that resource for Luke also.

As we saw in all of the SW movies, that that place, so long ago was far more technologically advanced than our own civilization and here we make habits of keeping old photos, telling family stories, and knowing that history by those mediums...has Luke (and Leia for that matter) sought those things out? Has Luke found, discovered, or just generally come across the Jedi archives for that information? Has he seen photos or holo's of his mother, father, and grandmother. Has he visited the final resting places of those people? We do know that Shmi is buried on the family farm on Tatooine, so we know that he knows where she's buried...but what about his mother Padme'...has Luke visited Naboo? The only things that Luke knows for sure (the last time that we saw him) is that Leia is his long-lost sister, his father was Anakin Skywalker that became Darth Vader (from a certain point of view), and that he is the last of the Jedi...that's pretty much it.

Now I suppose that in Luke's wandering in search of Jedi knowledge since ROTJ, that he has asked those questions of his force-ghost elders and that he had come across people and perhaps (and as discussed elsewhere here) other Jedi in hiding that potentially knew his parents. After all, his mother was the Queen of Naboo, and his father was Anakin Skywalker...the Jedi chosen one. So with that, it's fair to say that his parents were relatively famous and historical people that weren't merely peasants and forgotten in time....people knew them. Thoughts on what he's potentially learned...and how??

Most of the Luke I've known so far is eu the holocrons he found of his mother & Anakin on Mustafar etc, I think he will know his history before TFA.

I had a couple of threads in the past turning around that question... it all makes sense. For both Luke and Leia... I mean, in ROTJ, that emotional scene where Luke and Leia exchange thoughts and info on who their parents were... the next step, for Leia, is to seek out who here biological mother was (hence the earlier question I asked... what is the role of Padme in TFA... has she been discovered by Leia, will she be mentioned?)... And Luke, on his side, has plenty of time and see dead people... it's been quite established that Force Ghosts are more than just... ghosts... they have stories to tell, info to give... and also can bullsith (like Obi Wan did to Luke in ESB)...

So, I am pretty sure, this is something they did during the 30 years that seperate ROTJ and TFA... only to passed on to the next generataion, if, of course, the ST continue the Skywalker lineage.

Only thing about the skywalkers history is from the movies and the clone wars cartoon and whatever we see in rebels.

1.Darth Plagueis = Anakin's father? Hence the creation of life with the force.
2.Anakin Skywalker's wife Padme gives birth too twins, Luke and Leia.
3.Luke has no offspring for he is busy with things like hiding from the empire's inquisitors, guarding a tomb, and has worries about turning dark side or such.
4.Leia marries han solo? At least they have a offspring or two. Rey and Kylo.
5.Rey's more like her father then her mother Leia but has the force in her.
6.Kylo turns to the dark side, reasons unknown to us until we see the movie.

What goes on from there? we'll most likely get hints in episode 8 and 9. Thus the skywalker history! The EU is dead so.

I agree that Luke and Leia likely tried to learn more about their mother after ROTJ. The most logical answer is that Luke got info from Force Ghosts Obi Wan and Anakin. However, I don't think this is a storyline we will see anywhere.

As far as sharing the info with the next generation, I see it as a possibility with Anakin/Vader in the form of don't make the same mistake he made. I don't think there will be any mention of Padme in TFA and will be surprised if there is.

I'm confused with this post. The first sentence is a statement and the 6 points are all speculations that because of there speculative nature don't match to the initial statement.

    Please clarify. Thanks

Luke would not wait 30 years to find out anything more of his family past, maybe he's investigating someone else's past.

So Padme giving birth to Luke and Leia is speculation? LOL
There are hints that Plaguies is Anakin's father from episode 1 and in episode 3.
Luke having an offspring after RTOJ doesn't make sense to me, he had no love interest in the OT at all. He was to focused on Vader and killing the emperor.
And after RTOJ, Luke would make attempts to train Jedi, but Inquisitors and bounty hunters would hunt them down.
Leia and Han having sex at the time of the celebration of Endor or just after would make sense, thus having sex leads to having kids.
Rey is for sure a SOLO, and Kylo just makes sense.
We know Rey is some kind of smuggler/junkie.

    So what ever..

Nods, he already knows Anakin/Vader is his father. What he might not know who his grandfather is.

Yep if I was a director I would give Luke 15 minutes to find out then move on & get back to saving the galaxy.

My post was not meant to offend and I'll amend my previous statement. Numbers 1,3,4,5 are all speculation. #1 may be hinted at but it is still speciation. #2 is stated canon and #6 appears to be fact from what we have seen in the trailer. Unless you have a source with insider info # 4 is also just speculation. However I agree that Rey could very well be a Solo and the possibility of Kylie being one is also plausible.

My confusion was that the initial comment about the canon in which we know about the Skywalkers and the following statements did not match up. I am now guessing that the two were two total separate thoughts and not meant to be a list of what we know about the Skywalkers.

You would waste 15 minutes of screen time for Luke to investigate stuff we the audience already know about and have no reason at all to go over? What's he been doing for the last 30 years that suddenly makes it important for him to go through the GFFA equivalent of ancestry.com?

What a pointless exercise in alienating an audience that is already very turned off of Star Wars. :|

I agree that rehashing the genealogy of Luke Skywalker is unnecessary but I think you are vastly overstating the unsatisfaction towards Star Wars

I believe the new books, comics coming out after ROTJ will pick up on this. I loved EU but they failed on this subject, how Luke could not find out about Padme from Obi-Wan or Anakin force ghosts. Luke also could have learned from researching the dark side possibly finding some of Vader's and Palpatine stashes, who knows. I also think 30 plus years is a long time and Luke could well have met someone and fell in love and had a child but we will see in VII.

I asked something along these lines months ago, but this is way more comprehensive. Great thread!

Let's see what Luke could ask:

Why did my father turn to the Dark Side? This will lead him immediately to Sidious, but there probably isn't a great deal of information about him. Can we be certain Luke even knows Sidious was Palpatine--in fact, who exactly does know this? Yoda, Obi-Wan....would they tell Luke, or would they conceal this from him?

Who was my father? This will lead him to Tatooine and to Schmi. Someone above mentioned that Schmi is buried at the homestead: I'd missed that! So, what would Luke have been told about her in the past? She was your Uncle's Father's wife? How would he feel if he learned there was more to Schmi than that: Schmi is his grandmother!

Who was my grandfather? Does Luke know Anakin was conceived by the Force? Does he know Anakin was considered the Jedi Chosen One? Does he know Anakin killed his mother?

Who was my mother? Would this information be accessible to him? Again, would Yoda or Obi-Wan tell? Does R2 realise the importance of his memories?

Why all the coincidences? Why was I hidden on my father's home-planet? Is there something beneath the dunes of Tatooine that nurtures Force Sensitivity (a seam of crystal or something)? Does Luke know 3PO's past? What were the chances Luke would opt to purchase a protocol droid built by his father years earlier?

Luke was subjected to lies and had a lot of information withheld. I think if TFA doesn't address this and at least hint at his angst and soul searching, the film will have (not failed) but missed an important opportunity. Even if Luke decided his lineage didn't matter because he was focused on more important things, that still needs to be stated.

What I'd personally like to see is a Luke lost in the possibilities of his past and future, groping around for some identity and virtually beyond help when we first meet him in TFA. Tortured soul taking 40 days in the wilderness, subject to temptations of power and fame trying to establish his own way.

I believe the ST will be the 'spiritual' trilogy: the series of films with the most existential crisis (re: moral ambiguity) of the saga. We've had the Father (PT); we've had the Son (OT)-- with the awakening of the Force we will be investigating TGFFA's equivalent of the Holy Ghost, the Force itself. At least, I think that may have been where Lucas was heading: JJ and Disney may have veered somewhat to avert controversy, I guess....

Good post but the TFA is 30-35 years after ROTJ. I think that is just to far out to address Luke's soul searching. At this point he should have learned what he needed to learn. I feel like putting this info into the movie does not help advance the story going forward with our new characters. However, this would be a great topic to explore in other storytelling mediums like the books and comics and in these forms add a lot to the overall story arc of Luke.
