I'm guessing this is being discussed somewhere else so merge if necessary. But I think I have come to a sound conclusion regarding the questions relating to the title of this thread.

I personally think this whole map business was badly handled in the film. And it's pretty difficult to actually understand what happened on screen as they left the exposition to the novel and other books. But this is what I think happened - this is why Luke is searching for the Jedi Temple.

Firstly, in the Visual Dictionary it talks about how Lor San Tekka is a follower of the Church of the Force and very much believes in the Jedi way. It is said that when the Empire took over he took possession of valuable Jedi information to keep it hidden and safe. The Empire were of course destroying the Jedi and erasing them from the history books - literally.

In the film R2 inexplicably comes back to life and reveals that he may well have the missing map that when connected to BB8's piece, will reveal where Luke is. R2, as explained in the novel (!), got this information when he tapped into the control system on the Death Star. He got it from the Empire.

So it would appear that one of two things happened:

    - The Empire, quite understandably, erased the part of the map that showed where the Jedi Temple was. What they didn't know however, was that Lor San Tekka had kept the deleted part.

    - A Jedi erased the temples from the maps to keep them hidden from the Empire so they could remain as a sanctuary. I think this is more likely - I will explain why later.

Later on, the First Order somehow discover that Luke has gone off to find this missing temple (if Han knew then Ben Solo probably did too). Snoke is fearful of Luke (his power, his potentially destiny within the bloodline of the chosen one??) and so is desperate to find the him before the Resistance does. The First Order have had access to the same information Artoo did - the map with the deleted segment. It is important to remember that when the Empire deleted the Jedi Archive information, they deleted it for everyone. That information is lost forever - apart from the bits that folk like Lor San Tekka kept.

Anyway, why is Luke seeking out the last Jedi Temple? It is said in the novel that the Empire sought out these places so they wouldn't be a sanctuary to Jedi. This indicates that some Jedi might have sought to find the old temples to exile themselves in or maybe - and this is the important bit - find other Jedi.

Maybe what has happened with Luke is that after the destruction of his Jedi Order he goes off in search of other Jedi. From Lor San Tekka or someone connected he discovered a plot back in the PT era to maintain the Jedi Order by sending Jedi to remote ancient temples. But when Luke goes searching he finds none - until Rey finds him.

Look at it this way - there has to be a pretty good reason (I hope) that Luke didn't help out the Resistance, his sister, Han etc during the events of TFA. Maybe Luke realised that in order to defeat Snoke and the KOR (of whom there are numerous members apparently - almost a proper rival to the Jedi Order, not just like the 2 Sith) he needs more Jedi? Luke must've sensed the attack on the Jedi Temple coming or at least probably did - but was powerless to prevent it. Luke also had the might of the Republic/Resistance on his side yet didn't go after the KOR. Was he absent when the academy was attacked or were the KOR simply too much for him? Considering what we have seen in Rebels as well, with former Jedi playing a role and their fate not yet being decided, it wouldn't be a stretch to think that maybe Luke is desperately seeking out former Jedi as he hasn't the time to train up a new academy of Jedi?

Anyway, considering what we know now that for me, although still quite weak, is the only reason I can see why Luke went missing whilst his friends suffered and billions of lives perished.

What's more this might be a way to tie in Kenobi to the ST as well as opening up the possibility of a spin off. It was Kenobi who investigated the mystery of Kamino and its erasure from the Jedi Archives. He also in ROTS stopped the signal telling Jedi to return to the Temple. If Disney are planning a Kenobi spin off (which I think would be a shame as it would diminish ANH, but there you go) then maybe this (Kenobi erasing the Temples from the star maps and entrusting the information with the Church of the Jedi) will be the story? Unless he will end up in Rogue One?

Yeah. I'm not talking about the one on Coruscant. I'm saying Luke was searching for the old temple to see if Jedi went there after the purge.

I think Luke went to the "first" jedi Temple to sanction himself. I feel like his backstory is that at the fall of the Jedi academy he had to leave. I feel that his lost of Ben Solo and the failure of reestablishment (and possibly losing "someone" to the darkside and leaving Rey on jakku) made him go into exile so nobody can sense him. the jedi temple he was in search of was to find answers and learn more from the force. Lor San Tekka lost the church of the force possibly from the KOR and took jedi artifacts to use and like you said destroy the name of the Jedi and the lightside of the force.

May the force be with you always...

Yes ah, ain the very first temple EVER, which I doubt that Coruscant was not, Kenobie changed the temple code for the jedi to stay away from Coruscant, so you may be right, but Han Solo clearly states he was searching for the VERY FIRST JEDI TEMPLE .

There are a lot of subtle shout outs to KOTOR in this movie.. but I think it stops there

Now THIS may be a possibility. In the only known teaser for Rogue One, it is Obi Wan's voice we hear narrating.

I think you've misunderstood what I was suggesting.

I just said that because Kenobi is shown in AOTC unraveling the mystery of Kamini and in ROTS signalling the Jedi to stay away from Coruscant, it could be a good idea for him to later on hide the location of the first Jedi temple so it might be a safe haven for the remaining Jedi.

Or it could just be that the empire erased it themselves - but I'd question why they didn't just destroy it.

Yeah, I think the Empire would have just gone and destroyed it. So maybe someone deleted it so that the Empire could not destroy it. Considering they sent Vader on a mission to wipe out all the remaining Jedi, they would have surely gone there to destroy it. Or to maybe write some mean graffiti, like 'stupid Jedi', at least.

    Nice thread Master Shaitan...

    "First comes the day
    Then comes the night.
    After the darkness
    Shines through the light.
    The difference, they say,
    Is only made right
    By the resolving of gray
    Through refined Jedi sight."
    ―Journal of the Whills, 7:477

This quote from the novelisation, I think probably tells much about what to expect from the upcoming trilogy, the second half of this I think speaks of having to rethink ideas... I could see a scenario in which Luke is forced to go back to the drawing board so to speak, relating also to the question 'who is Luke Skywalker?'.

In the Original Trilogy we see Luke go through his progression from farm boy to Jedi Master, he redeems his father and refines the meaning of what it is to be a Jedi. But was Luke's progression finished there? was he qualified to rebuild the Jedi order on his own? In The Force Awakens we learn that Luke attempted to establish his new Jedi Order only for it to fall in seemingly quick time.

Could it have been the will of the force? Did Luke build his new order on the ways of the Old Jedi? the same ways that were found wanting by Anakin Skywalker in the prequels?

I think also, the story of Snoke will play into this...

I see Snoke somehow managing to infiltrate the Luke's Order in a way reminiscent of Palpatine and the Republic, I could see him after a while begin to embarrass Luke with an apparent deeper knowledge of the Force, doing some far out things that would impress upon a young mind such as Ben Solo's.

Perhaps Snoke used some methods that Luke had no answer to, eventually leading him to journey as deep into the lore of force users as he could, this journey taking him to the first Jedi Temple and perhaps a more holistic vision of the force.

In whatever way it plays out, I see Luke needing to re-examine his methods, Rey and perhaps to a lesser degree Finn and Poe will also be involved in this I think, perhaps also bringing in the ideas George Lucas had in mind for his vision of the sequels, moral dilemmas and making the right choices... not being beholden to inflexible codes which can at times impede the true will of the force.

You bring up a lot of great points and I think you are on to something. It doesnt really seem to me that Luke went to the temple to run, he could have hid himself anywhere. It seems like him going to the jedi temple was more of a personal odyssey. When he beat the emporer he used a path no one expected him to use by drawing the good out of Vader. Maybe he went to the temple to discover the path he needed to take to defeat Snoke.

I think more likely than the Jedi hiding various temple's locations from the Empire at the end of RoTS, that the Jedi probably hid it centuries before. The Jedi Order has shown they have no problem being secretive and lying to their own was never an issue. Probably someone a long time ago thought it was a good idea to erase certain temple locations from everyone, including their own order, to preserve them down the line. As sneaky as that sounds, it would seem to have saved them from destruction later one (if this turns out to be the case).

What if Snoke is indeed Darth Plagueis.
What if Plagueis is immortal... And Luke find out that fact...
What if he discovered the fact that Plagueis has created Vader and played Palpatine all along and that his next step is either to destroy him or to convert him...
What if Luke is hiding, knowing that while Snoke is looking for him, he doesn't pay attention to other Force sensitive, potential Jedi (after the events at the academy and Ben's abduction), like his sister and his daughter...

And, what, at the same time, Luke is trying to find a way to fight an immortal Snoke... Maybe the key is somewhere in the first Jedi temple...

My alternate theory is Luke has been working on a 4 sided Prog-Rock LP telling of 'The Jedi Path' for the past 10 years, he's got lost along the way and it's nowhere near completion, just reels and reels of 'experiments'.. the project is crying out for a pair of fresh ears and probably needs to be cut down to 2 sides if it's to appeal to the general music buying public, could Rey be the one to finally help get Luke's magnum opus out there?

There is definitely room to speculate not only on Snoke being Plagueis but that Luke is seeking some ancient knowledge that could help him understand the new threat. That's not enough to keep him out of action in my view, but it could be part of why he is where he is. What is interesting is that the TFA novel begins with a quote from The Journal of the Whills and it is from the Whills that Qui Gon learned about Jedi immortality. So with this being 'the first Jedi temple' it isn't a huge jump to suggest that Luke is looking for the Whills (whatever they are...it is...) to discover more about immortality/the Force.

Man, if they brought in the Whills that would be far out, they've already thrown a curve ball in introducing the Knights of Ren, we will see... we will see.

It's long been my headcanon that Yoda's species founded the Jedi, so maybe Skellig Michael is Yoda's homeworld.

I think Luke was blindsided by Ben's turn to the dark side. I doubt he himself was overwhelmed. It happened when he was gone or maybe even sleeping. Hell, he was crouching beside R2 in the dark and the scene with the bodies happened in the dark.

Alternatively, Snoke himself could have been involved. Did Luke get bested? Did he injure Snoke and they both took to their respective corners to lick their wounds?

Regardless of who Snoke is (cough, Plagueis, cough), it is obvious he is being set up to rival Luke and maybe even to surpass him. Luke probably does need allies. Maybe he's too old a la OB1 and needing an apprentice, Rey, to carry the torch.

The temple to me is a religious mecca. A holy site if you will. Undoubtedly there exists knowledge their - is it prone to other/past force ghosts (Jedi, Whills?)? Does it contain archaic tomes or represent a Dagobah-ish location for meditation?

I'm not convinced Luke was waiting for anyone else. Or hiding per se. I bet it was a meditative move - like Yoda. He sees a bigger picture than The Resistance VS The New Order. A single force-user on either side could turn the tides.

He's less important as front-line fighter - although more than capable - and more useful as a mystical leader. Just like Snoke presumably.
